AIBU to think there's nothing wrong with me?

Namechanged in case IABU and people hate me!

When I was growing up, we always had dogs, but I never bothered much with them. I was once given some goldfish for my birthday, but I wasn't fussed. My aunt and uncle had horses - not interested. My cousin has a cute puppy, of which I like to see pictures, but I don't like it when they visit. My DH has got cats, but I don't care for them either.

I guess I'm just not a pet person, and I'm quite content with that. Apart from finding living with cats very annoying, but my DH loves them, so I respect that. I wouldn't ever hurt an animal, just ignore it and get on with my life.

However, if anyone asks me about this, or tries to get me to be enthusiastic about their pets, and they find out that I don't care, they recoil in horror and treat me as if I were some kind of mass murderer. They seem to think that in order to be a decent human being you have to dote on animals and find their every move cute and adorable.

AIBU to think that there's nothing wrong with me?

I'm not interested in animals. I wouldn't want to see them harmed but I just can't enthuse about them and certainly wouldn't want one in my home.

Personally I think that people who are over the top animal lovers tend to be quite vacuous.

i think my MIL preferred her dogs to her husband or children!
She idolised them, spoilt them and turned the dogs into complete 'divas' not healthy at all in my opinion. we have never had pets, if we did have she would have said we were not bringing it up right !
Animals are hard work and i had enough trying to bring the kids up properly without all the work involved with having a pet, plus i am allergic to cat hair.
I have known plenty of self absorbed selfish types who have pets - seems to be more of an accessory for some people than a pet these days.

Yes, and in contrast with a lot of people on here, I find that the degree to which someone 'cares' about animals is inversely proportionate to the degree to which they care about people.

Many people are in the "animals are more important than people" camp.
