To not understand Location Location Location?

Just sitting watching this with my wife. Can someone help me out with it? Are the "rules" for getting a mortgage different in London than the rest of the country? I see what appear to be relatively normal young couples with relatively normal jobs looking at houses that are 500k plus. How are they making these mortgages affordable?

I also get confused at the ones where a couple / person has a really small search area (like only a particular village) and a really specific criteria (like the house must have 5 bedrooms). Why on earth do you need Kirstie and Phil's help for that? There's literally probably only a handful of properties that are going to fulfil that brief. Would it really be so hard just to put the location and minimum 5 bedrooms required into right-move, and see what comes up and arrange some viewings on your own?

I particularly love when couples are very, very specific with something that is a must have and then smug faced Phil takes them to somewhere that doesn't meet the criteria at all. Hmm

Then he gets all irritated because they don't like it!

The programme is crap really but can't resist watching it still.

Like a pp said, I'm interested in the couple dynamics and how decisions are made, particularly when each of the couple likes a different house. I'm so glad that I bought on my own, even if it means a hovel, because it's at least a hovel to my taste.

And when they go back and revisit, how come the couples have never split up? They're always beaming smugly with another baby or 3. Given the divorce rate, some must have split up. Show me the bitter exes lumbered with property they can barely afford.

We watched "Move to the Country" yesterday and the woman was quite reasonable I thought. 3 beds, 45 minutes from Middlesbrough and detached, ideally private.
The houses they showed her were:

  1. 5 bed and totally overlooked by neighbours.
  2. nice house but joined on to another house, and back garden not very private (from the one neighbours).
  3. Really nice house, she liked it but too far from Middlesbrough.

I could have done better with 5 minutes of rightmove.

It baffles me too when couples with averagely paid jobs seem to have massive budgets. I am assuming it's inheritance or family assistance
