IIRC, that's pretty much what the journalist who recorded The Trump Tapes said. That after a while, you start getting sucked in.
Because it's all so crazy that you have to pick your battles - but that every time you don't challenge him on something, this constitutes collusion. And that he actively claims lack of challenge is agreement, so later when you do challenge him he'll use that to attack you.
As the journalist described it, everyone around Trump becomes part of the crazy.
