To think giving/receiving valentines from DCs is just silly?

Just that really.
Tedious amount of pictures on Facebook 'oh how I love dc- happy valentines' complete with card and teddy etc. Having valentines meal with the kids, giving them roses etc
Consumerism gone mental if you ask me. I'd never send my mum a valentines card.

Omg amen. I think it's ridiculous! So so ridiculous! I'm a nanny and I didn't do any valentine's crafts with the kids. And we tend to do crafts for lots of occasions. My mum bought me a valentine biscuit from the baker but I'm mid 20s and she wasn't buying it because of Valentine's... she just chose a biscuit that looked nice!

My kids made some at school and gave them to me. I thought it was cute. In fact I think the eldest could have written the card to anyone and chose me, DH and DD. So even cuter.
Giving them to the kids though - weird!
I can see how people might go out as a family rather than a couple though. If you can't get a sitter and still want to go out

The whole thing is utterly ridiculous.
I also saw pics on fb of kids getting presents. Not the tradition that happens in Norfolk of chocolate being left, but proper bloody presents.

Each to their own but it isn't something we do. Personally I think it is worse all the people who get their young kids giving Valentines Cards to their "boyfriend"/"girlfriend" - too many 4/5/6 yr olds on my Facebook holding cards and teddies saying "how cute what little Bobby got from his girlfriend #younglove"

There is no escape! Relentless pressure to buy stuff, send cards, hold dinners or barbeques, "celebrate or else". Putting it on FB just makes it worse - you feel that you are being the misery-guts for being alone in not "getting" enough or doing enough or buying enough. And so we measure our self worth in things and money spent.

My DD made me a card, she also made one for her dad, her nana, her guinea pigs and herself. She made them at a friends house, I don't encourage Valentine's Day at all, I think it's bullshit. But I am a miserable cynical bastard so hey ho.

That as well Excellentwork!!! Why would you want your child to become aware of this stuff so young? Hate it when older relatives go "so dd have u got a boyfriend at school?" No she hasn't cos she's 7
Why do people want kids to be mini adults? Plenty of time to worry about relationships.
And buying presents? Jeez.

I find it a bit fucked up and creepy since Valentines day is traditionally about romantic love and courtship.

I sent my 8 year old a Boomf box card that explodes with confetti when opened. He thought it was hilarious, it really made him laugh and loved it. It's a day of love and a personal preference. I don't see anything wrong with it, if it makes someone smile.

I agree, it's ridiculous and, imho, a little bit creepy, gievn what Valentines is supposed to represent.

DD made a card for her dad and me in school - she's 7. The Arts and Crafts club were making them, apparently, but it's beyond me why on earth does a primary school even need to enter into the subject at all?

Yep, totally ridiculous. but then so is the whole of valentine's day, i don't like Mothers day or Fathers day either, if you love and appreciate someone you should be showing them that every day, not waiting for some holiday to buy some tacky card, while the fuss makes anyone who is alone feel even more lonely.

And definitely with you on the boyfriend thing. SIL is forever asking children if they have boyfriends/girlfriends, it really annoys me. I remember my much younger sister age about 6 crying her eyes out because boys are annoying and she didn't want a boyfriend (we have 5 brothers, i can see her point)

I got my kids some sweets. My mum always used to get me and my siblings sweets for Valentines and her and my dad never bothered getting each other nything! So it's always been about celebrating any kind of love for me - not just the romantic kind.
The only thing that creeps me out is that I've seen a few dads on Facebook who have done cards/presents for their dd's but not their sons. That confuses me a little.

Oh and encouraging 4 yo's to get cards for their 'gf/bf' - that's frickin weird as well.

And all the birthdays badknee. We must spend a fortune on shitty cards, that just end up in the recycling. Either that, or they're so nice, that I feel guilty throwing them away.

Well I gave my DS a chocolate heart because I love him and he made me a valentines card in return. Nothing wrong with that is there? No need to plaster it all over Facebook though.

Personally I think Valentines day is for lovers.

I bought dd a rose ( chocolate) because in her favourite book a mummy chicken gave her baby chick a rose when he was sad and all his friends said that his mummy must really love him to give him that. I gave her the rose and quoted what the mummy chicken said. Every family is different and has different traditions that they think are important. I think I will give her a red rose every year and keep this up because it means something to us.

silly and cutesie. I think valentines cards are best left to lovesick teenagers. By the time I started getting them I wasn't bothered but would have loved a real one age 13, but not if I found out it was a pity card from a relative. It's a festival of eros not philia.

I used to send cards to my mum's work in the when I was a kid in the 90s

I was a very soppy child.

Valentine's leaves me feeling between meh on a good day to annoyed that I have to walk past shelves of pink on a grumpy one but DH likes it so he gets a card and chocolate

DS 10 then got upset as he didn't have a card/sweets - he was firmly told my views (again!) on Hallmark holidays and that valentines is for soppy adult couples only

It's just a bit of fun, and the kids like getting them I expect. Life would be very dull if we didn't have 'consumerist' occasions like Valentines, birthdays, halloween, Christmas. It would be one big long 'meh' with no pauses. Imo.
