To think pasta pesto isn't a universal kid friendly meal?

I often see this stated as a meal that all kids like, up there with pizza/nuggets/fishfishfingers, but I honestly don't know many kids who like it, and know more who wouldn't know what it is.
Dd's too old for playdates now but I'd never have served it, not in a million years, is it really universal kid food?
Admittedly we live in a small Scottish town but we have a Waitrose, and a Private school, it's not some weird backwater.

Both DC's have nut allergies and also has a dairy allergy. Definitely no pesto pasta in this house!

NoBetterName · 13/02/2017 18:35

*and one also has....

annielouise · 13/02/2017 18:36

Is it perhaps more popular with those 8 and under? Mine are older. Perhaps it's the equivalent of humous and olives for the kids my DC's age.

Artandco · 13/02/2017 18:36

Mine love pesto. They don't like fishfingers or chips or nuggets ( basically breaded stuff)

megletthesecond · 13/02/2017 18:36

Can't have pesto in the house because DS is hugely allergic to pine nuts.

I miss pesto Sad.

VintagePerfumista · 13/02/2017 18:37

Pesto in jars is foul. Bitter tasting and generally made with crap ingredients.

The fresh stuff is completely different, much milder. Dd quite likes it, but whinges I do it too often. (once a week, because it's super quick)

I would probably serve pasta and tomato sauce though over pesto if someone was coming.

EB123 · 13/02/2017 18:37

My 3 like it but I think pasta with a cheese sauce is probably more popular in general.

RockyBird · 13/02/2017 18:38

I have one child who loves it and another who hates it. I'm not keen on it myself, and I like most food.

JorahsMissus · 13/02/2017 18:38

Nope, mine wouldn't eat it nor would I serve it up for play dates.

NoBetterName · 13/02/2017 18:39

But both mine (12 and 8 yo) love olives, pickled garlic, English mustard etc but not homous (also allergies to pulses).

SumAndSubstance · 13/02/2017 18:40

My DS (4) would happily have it for dinner every night of the week (he doesn't get it!), especially with some peas stirred in. Sometimes I try to persuade him to have some kind of meat with it, but he really isn't bothered about meat.

DandelionAndBedrock · 13/02/2017 18:40

I'm 27. It's taken DP 7 years to convince me that pesto pasta is a meal worth making (he LOVES it). Wouldn't have gone near at as a child, and I would happily have eaten plain pasta.

Crunchymum · 13/02/2017 18:40

DC1 wouldn't touch it (even when he wasn't as fussy) DC2 beg for it every meal time Shock

JellyWitch · 13/02/2017 18:40

My kids rank it with homemade fish pie as a favourite.

They wouldn't touch tomato based pasta sauce though.

user1472334322 · 13/02/2017 18:40

My dc love pasta especially ds2. They'll eat pasta with most sauces. They eat pesto but prefer tomato or cheese sauces. They also love hummus!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 13/02/2017 18:41

It's a big favourite in this house. Plus its from a jar. We have it at least once a week with salad or veg.

I'm jealous you have a Waitrose though. No sign of one coming here.

Buscake · 13/02/2017 18:41

My three absolutely love it (fresh stuff). They stuff their faces and ask for more-guaranteed full tummies every time. I wouldn't give it to visiting friends though - I'd make eg fish fingers/sausages/pizza which are more universally liked by children I think

PurpleAlerts · 13/02/2017 18:41

Mine love it but I add oven roasted veg - peppers, courgettes, onions, mushrooms, cherry toms etc and also often some pancetta or fried bacon.

Serve with grated cheese, a side salad and garlic bread. Yum

I find just pasta with pesto on its own a bit dull but one of my DDs would have lived off it when she was small.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/02/2017 18:41

One hates it, one loves it. Why can't we have just one meal they both like?

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/02/2017 18:42

Middle class version of beans on toast, but without the nutritional content!

My lot cant stand it.

Enko · 13/02/2017 18:43

Mine would all eat it and I have served it plenty of times when they had play dates where it has been scoffed down with asks for "more please"
Mine however would not have eaten Fish Fingers or Chicken nuggets so whilst pesto worked for us the others didn't Hence I have to agree there is no such thing as a universal kids friendly meal

helensburgh · 13/02/2017 18:43

Surely iys like anything else . Some like some don't.

hiccupgirl · 13/02/2017 18:44

My fussy eater won't touch it but I quite like it myself.

I def wouldn't pick it as a child friendly meal - that would be plain pizza or fish fingers.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 13/02/2017 18:44

When I think about it we have pasta 2 or 3 times a week. Pretty much any sauce with it. It's so easy when I'm tired and is eaten without complaint.

PerspicaciaTick · 13/02/2017 18:44

Pesto is the devil's vomit. Vile, vile stuff. I can't imagine any child willingly eating the stuff.
