To think pasta pesto isn't a universal kid friendly meal?

I often see this stated as a meal that all kids like, up there with pizza/nuggets/fishfishfingers, but I honestly don't know many kids who like it, and know more who wouldn't know what it is.
Dd's too old for playdates now but I'd never have served it, not in a million years, is it really universal kid food?
Admittedly we live in a small Scottish town but we have a Waitrose, and a Private school, it's not some weird backwater.

My 2yo loves it, she'd happily eat it for every meal if allowed!

annielouise · 13/02/2017 18:24

Any kids coming would get sausage, chips and beans or pizza and salad bits like cherry tomatoes chopped up and bits of cucumber. I never experimented with anything else.

Hastalapasta · 13/02/2017 18:24

I make my own pesto as I find the stuff in a jar very bitter. 1 out of 3 DC eat it......

Ha! Tell that to my born and bred Italian son.

Who won't touch the stuff.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 13/02/2017 18:25

My ds loves pasta but won't eat anything wet so pesto is out bt pasta with chese and veg on another plate is a winner

AllTheBabies · 13/02/2017 18:25

My baby is currently at the stage that she'll eat anything so she would like it.

The 6yo would only eat it if it was completely smothered in cheese.

Meffy · 13/02/2017 18:25

Neither of my kids will eat the pasta!!!!

RortyCrankle · 13/02/2017 18:26

I loathe pasta and pesto and wouldn't eat it, so anyone's DCs who wouldn't eat it either have great taste IMO Grin

BikeRunSki · 13/02/2017 18:26

DS (8) hates pesto!!! DD (5) is quite keen, on pasta or toast.

ny20005 · 13/02/2017 18:26

Both my kids love it ! They even have pesto on homemade pizzas instead of tomato sauce

pinkish · 13/02/2017 18:26

Mine have had it at least four times a week since they were small! All their friends like it too.

DisneyMillie · 13/02/2017 18:27

Dd7 loves it - all pesto meals - we've just had risotto with pesto (plus chicken and veg) for dinner

WankersHacksandThieves · 13/02/2017 18:28

A big no in my house too - also scottish and with a waitrose and private school

PickAChew · 13/02/2017 18:29

One of mine can't eat pasta without gagging and neither can eat cheese without puking, so it's definitely not served in this house.

Can't say I'm much of a fan, either. Just the wrong textures for me.

Juanbablo · 13/02/2017 18:29

Pasta and pesto is always a hit with my 3 and pretty much all children who visit. I bloody love it too.

littleducks · 13/02/2017 18:29

Mine ate it as toddlers and it was served often at play dates. But now (10,8) they wouldn't despite being fairly non fussy

BreatheDeep · 13/02/2017 18:30

DS1 loves pesto, hates tomato based sauces on pasta. Also hates pizza. So nothing is universally liked, unsurprisingly.

picklemepopcorn · 13/02/2017 18:31

Mine all did, but what made it kid friendly was being able to serve plain pasta, pesto pasta or cheesy pasta, depending on the fussiness! No effort, quite flexible.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/02/2017 18:31

Swings and roundabouts really.

ratspeaker · 13/02/2017 18:31

Well a lot of pesto is not suitable for vegetarians due to the rennet in the cheese used.
So wouldn't be suitable for my younger ones.

ArriettyClock1 · 13/02/2017 18:32

Always been a staple in our house, but has to be homemade for my fussy offspring. I don't mind it from a jar, but I am the only one.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/02/2017 18:32

I'm not a fan- too oily and a bit bland when mixed with equally bland pasta. Mine much prefer a tomato based sauce than pesto.

pictish · 13/02/2017 18:34

My kids love pasta with pesto.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 13/02/2017 18:34

DD(8) loves it, DS(12) would rather starve.

I've always had pasta as an option for Rainbow sleepovers, as has sister for cubs though as we buy pasta sauce, pesto, cheese and butter, minimum effort to have different options but most children will eat one of them.

MrsNuckyThompson · 13/02/2017 18:34

My DS and his friends seems to all like it. This weekend we went to soft play on Friday and he has two play dates at friends. He had it for FOUR meals, totally by accident!! Think lots of people view it as quick, easy and pretty much a staple for toddlers and up!!
