AIBU?

AIBU to think 6 pairs of underpants in not sufficient?

I was visiting my parents and DF came out of shower complaining he had no clean underpants in drawer. He had to wait for the wash my DM was doing to finish, and them tumble dry the three pairs of underpants that were in there( among other things obviously). When I asked if they had had trouble with washing machine and had been unable to do washing DM said no. DF had three more pairs of pants in laundry basket which makes a total of 6. DM saw no problem in this - God knows what they do when they go on holiday for longer than a week. My DH ,DD and myself have at least 14 pairs each. My DPs are in their 70s, is this an age thing?

When I was at University there was a girl who ran out of pants halfway through the final term of the year - she thought she had brought enough for the year Grin.

Just counted. I have 54 pairs in my drawer, DH has 22, then his 'Christmas' pants are in another drawer (maybe 6 pairs) with his Christmas socks etc and I recently sorted about a dozen tattier pairs out to take away and bin before the flight back. Then there may be another 6 pairs each in the laundry basket. I didn't think we were excessive! I'm sure my mum has lots. Mine does include 6 thongs which I haven't worn in years, some lacy ones which are too scratchy but too unworn to chuck and some 'special' ones!

That's quite a lot considering that people only used to have 2 pairs, one to wash & one to wear, & they only changed them once a week years ago :-O

But in saying that I have about 18 pairs, I like to do 2 weeks on holiday & have clean ones to come home to. Otherwise, I'd probably have about 10 pairs to go with my capsule wardrobe.

My Mom has a drawer full of them, but perhaps that's because she never used to have much when she was younger.

I've got about 6 or 7 black and 5 white.
Plus a few old black ones in a different drawer just in case because I don't like throwing things away.
All basic M&S bikini or mini style.
I don't match them to anything, I just put them on.
DH has between 6 & 10 as do both DS's.

We have loads more pants than 6 per person in our house. At a guess I'd say at least 30 per person here.

I suppose 6 per person would be manageable provided that you were careful not to fall behind on the washing. Although I'd want more spares for young DC who aren't 100% there with toilet training yet.

In their 70s, so born 1940s-ish - wouldn't the norm back then (and well into the 1960s) have been a weekly wash on a Monday? So I would have thought 8 pairs of pants would have been the norm/minimum (7 being washed, 1 worn). Unless of course as a man your dad was expected to wear his pants for more than one day. Eew.

I have enough for a two week holiday, and a clean pair on return. It's worth the extra money just to never have to think about it. They don't go off, do they? So they'll never got to waste.

It's clearly not enough as he didn't have any to put on.
That's birthdays and Christmas sorted out for a while!

Blimey - I have about 50 pairs of knickers I reckon!

First-year undergrad DS1 has just messaged me to say that he 'had a bit of an underwear crisis as the washing machine on his floor has been on the blink for a week'. Rather than handwash any/retrieve them from the floordrobe/find another washing machine/go commando as far as Tesco, he seemed to be genuinely contemplating staying in his room for the foreseeable future.

Bet he wishes he'd taken enough pants to last the year.

If DS is ever bored enough to look at Mumsnet, he's probably going to kill me.

Could be time for a namechange here.

Do you knowDahlietta, I have never thought about it like that. Grin

He is bloody obsessed with buying pants and short sleeved shirts/t shirts/ polo shirts. There are loads of the flaming things with the tags still attached hung in the spare room wardrobe. Also he seems to be constantly picking up those 5 packs of pants.

Ah well, everyone needs a hobby don't they is what he would say and he needs them for his holidays which we take around 3/4 times per year again as he often says 😎😎😎

It's obviously not enough because he's ran out!
Tell him next time he's out to buy another pack.

I have no idea how many I have but at a guess I would say about 20ish (90% black m&s multipacks) pairs but they are all at least 2 but prob closer to 6-8 years old so I should really replace them Blush

It's probably one of those things/habits that you do for years, then realise, what the heck am I doing, then start doing it the easier way, this just hasn't dawned on him to buy a few more pairs.
I'm mean, depending on how often you put a wash on, I'd feel comfortable with about 14 pairs.

I have a full drawer of nice ones (thongs, French knickers etc) and then another drawer of "period" pants. My boyfriend's mum buys him new socks and underwear every birthday/Christmas so he has loads too.

My own mum though well she's a bit weird about underwear; I bought her 3 packets of new ones from Bon Marche at Christmas as stocking fillers but they are still in the packets in her bedroom drawers because she is "saving them" - She's also "saving" the posh toiletries I bought for her "just incase" and she has so far refused to wear her new slippers/dressing gown as she is "saving" those as well incase she ever needs "to go into hospital".

It might be a nice idea for you to pick up a few new pairs for your dad, then he won't have to wait around on washing being done.

If he had enough he wouldn't have run out. He could easily resolve this, when dressed he could go and buy more. Plenty of shops sell pants for men, so not a rarity that will require hours of travel.

I have quiet a lot.
10 boxer short types ones.
10 thongs for when I don't want a vpl
7 high legged for periods.
Several pairs of fancy ones
Couple of novelty ones.
And a couple of bodysuits.

The fancy ones have a matching top. The rest don't, they get worn with whatever gets pulled out.

No, I don't match my knickers to my bras.
I have atm the same bra in different colour - 2 white, 1 nude & 1 black.
What colour top I am wearing determines bra colour.
What point in my menstrual cycle I am at is the major factor in determining knicker colour.

Jeez, both me and my kids have twelvty million pairs of pants each - no danger of us running out in the event of a Zombie Apocalypse. No idea why we have so many pairs really, other than my mother always brings a pack or two each every time she visits, and I don't chuck them out unless they are worn out.

Feel like a weird pants hoarder now! Grin

No idea how many I have, but they fill a half size IKEA Malm drawer if that helps!

For a weekend away, I'd pack Saturday, Sunday, spare, fallen in the water. Going on holiday where I'm prepared to do laundry if it's longer than a week, I'd still pack a pair per day even on the assumption that I'll be washing.

I could understand 8 pairs to last a week with a laundry day, but 6 is too few.

Pants are so cheap and easily accessible in places like the supermarket, there's no benefit in being frugal over them.

(Emergency purchases of Sainsburys High Waist a couple of sizes bigger than normal were a total godsend after an EMCS, when I discovered that the pants that I'd bought to go under my bump now rubbed the wound with precision!)

DJKKSlider · 13/02/2017 19:28

Surely the absolute minimum should be 8 pairs, one for each day of the week and a spare.

Change pants everyday? Why? How wasteful!
Can get at least a week out of a pair, 2weeks if I ain't gotta gussy mesen up none. Grin

If I am taken to hospital, I can't imagine the medics will care at all if my bra and knickers match or not. And I suspect I would be too ill or in too much pain to care.
