Mil is worried and getting a bit judgy about our parenting after reading something about rice cakes containing poison or something. Has anyone else heard about this?

I swear there is no foodstuff about which you could post on MN without someone popping up going "well why is your toddler eating x,y,z anyway"

I could post: today my husband was arrested for fraud while eating Nutella on toast with my 2yo, what can I do?

And I guarantee one of the answers would be "why is your toddler having Nutella?" Hmm

Toddlers don't need sugar at all. Carbs and fat yes but not sugar.

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 11:46

carbs ARE sugar oysterbabe, and yes they do need sugar! Every cell in your body runs on sugar, and only sugar ( except in the late stages of starvation)

Oysterbabe · 12/02/2017 11:50

No carbs are not sugar. Potatoes are not mostly sugar. The body can turn carbs into sugar, in order to power the cells. Sugar is not needed in the diet at all.

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 11:52

carbs are sugar. Starch is EXACTLY the same as glucose, except with the molecules stuck together.

Oysterbabe · 12/02/2017 11:56

Fine whatever. Carrying on thinking that rice, pasta etc are full of sugar and I'll carry on thinking that sugar is full of sugar.

nelipotter · 12/02/2017 11:58

So all couple of billion people across Asia who all eat rice multiple meals a day are all dying of arsenic poisoning.... Uh huh
This has got to be a crock.

SockswithSandals · 12/02/2017 12:03

@hatemylifenow this is one of the spelling mistakes that really annoys me! Normally misspelled by people who call each other 'hun' and 'babes' Grin

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:03

look it up, oyster babe. Do you have children? Look it up in their science text book, It is a very basic fundamental, you are going to find it in any secondary text book from y7 upwards, if not at primary level. Starch is made of glucose. basic fact.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/02/2017 12:04

I like marmite rice cakes, carby, carbs and salt, yum
Ooh, also arrancini, deep fried carbs and salt.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 12/02/2017 12:06

carbs are sugar. Starch is EXACTLY the same as glucose, except with the molecules stuck together

That is such a ridiculous oversimplification as to be totally meaningless.
And btw, something can't be exactly the same as something else "except" anything. If it is except one thing, it is not exactly the same.

Artandco · 12/02/2017 12:07

Neli- every person I know from Asia who eats rice often do soak and wash rice first though. Which is what they are saying most in the uk aren't doing

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:12

That is such a ridiculous oversimplification as to be totally meaningless.

no it isn't, it is a simple straight forward fact. I don't get the issue. Starch is a sugar. It is a big sugar made of sticking little sugars together, same way a wall made of lego is exactly the same as a pile of lego bricks, except stuck together.

I just made a simple straightforward, non controversial comment, and suddenly all the ignorance in the world comes out and starts parading up and down!

I should have just said I wouldn't fill your baby up with rice cakes, they are mostly just air and don't have the nutritional content that a baby needs, so unless your child has some sort of problem where they eat too much, ( it can happen in babies) then I would prefer give them something more nutritious as part of their daily volume of food.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 12/02/2017 12:16

The latter half of that sentence makes it clear that you don't do simple or straightforward comments, but ridiculous overblown in either direction hyperbole!

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 12/02/2017 12:17

How can you fill someone up on something that is mostly air? What's the carb content of air then?
Do try to make some sense.

Hatemylifenow · 12/02/2017 12:24

user it's ok, I only feed my baby organic air and seaweed crackers.

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:27

Narky, sorry I was being light hearted about it, sorry if that didn't come across, but it is actually very ignorant not to know that starch is made of glucose. I have no objection to ignorance at all! We are all ignorant of many things! ( until we are told) however in this case, you would have been taught this at school in year 7 AND year 8 AND year 9 AND year 10, AND at GCSE, AND I just reminded you of it, so the ignorance in this case, is pretty willful!

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:31

Do try to make some sense.

what is not making sense to you The stretch receptors in the stomach are not going to differentiate between solid, liquid or gas, that is not how it works. And there is no carb content of air.

I'm not sure if you seriously think there is? or are just being silly because you are trying to cover up you were wrong? If you are serious, I apologise

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:47

The OP has actually started a thread titled AIBU to feed DS rice cakes. So presumably she is going to get peoples opinions on whether DC should be fed rice cakes. That's all!

Hatemylifenow · 12/02/2017 12:49

Yes wrt to the level of arsenic, not whether or not you think they're air.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 12/02/2017 12:49

I didn't say it wasn't correct in essence, I said you massively oversimplified. Don't you understand the difference?

ineedwine99 · 12/02/2017 12:53

How does this affect baby rice? My 6 month old has 2-4 teaspoons a day mixed with purée

user1484226561 · 12/02/2017 12:56

its not oversimplified Narky, its exactly what it is!

Artandco · 12/02/2017 12:56

Baby rice? No idea but I would never feed a baby ' baby rice'. It's just filler. They need nutrition. A 6 month old eats little, so the little needs to be nutritious
