To adore manchester

Roygrace · 11/02/2017 07:15

Aibu unreasonable to love Manchester and feel more settled here than my home country.

Moved here 20 years ago after coming from home country. So lived here longer than I lived there. I love the people, the accent and just feel so settled. Isn't it funny where you settle and begin to adore. I only came for 6 months. North west always gets a bad press on here!

Shins it's spelt Piccadilly. If you're going to slag it off at least spell it properly please.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 13/02/2017 13:38

I'm dying with laughter at the thought of Manchester as a right wing, majority white area. See, if it was, I think you would like it a lot more. Hmm Grin

gleam · 13/02/2017 13:44

I've been to Manchester a few times recently and I really liked it. I found the people to be really friendly.

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 13:45

Yes I meant Picadilly Gardens which is a 5 min walk from Picadilly Station. Abd therefore the "train station area" as I said. And it's dog rough.

Why do you think that makes it therefore the train station area?

Also, the area that's actually around Piccadilly train station is dog rough, more so than the Gardens. And I speak as someone who has been mugged in Piccadilly Gardens...

shins · 13/02/2017 13:56

You're right. I know nothing. 5 mins away does not mean the general area. I missed out a c while hastily typing on a phone. The area is not in fact full of litter and people off their faces on drink and drugs, and I wasn't warned against it by actual Mancunians. I am clearly a hateful bigot or something Confused

BobbyNoggle · 13/02/2017 13:57

Its ok but not a patch on Liverpool.

Liverpool has better football teams too GrinWink

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 14:08

What's an actual Mancunian shins? Do you think the people telling you about Manchester now aren't?

shins · 13/02/2017 14:32

No I did not suggest that at all. You know perfectly well I am talking about people I know who were born and raised in Manchester. But you do seem bizarrely fixated on attacking me for making an observation several other posters have already made on this thread.

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 14:53

I don't know perfectly well at all, as your posts are rather incoherent. Also, several posters have not observed that Piccadilly Gardens is people's first impression if they've come by train. That was just you. You perhaps think I was arguing against your contention that it's a bit rough: if so, read my posts again.

I love Manchester , feel very lucky to live near such great cities (Liverpool & Manc)
However I was there on Saturday and it was raining ☔️

LiefieLiefie · 13/02/2017 15:47

I have just accepted a job offer today based in Manchester. Not starting for a month, but really excited.

Just need to find a one bed flat that will accept cats now!

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 13/02/2017 16:18

Liefe quite a lot of the new apartments in Ancoats seems quite accepting of cats.

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 16:21

Where will you be working, what kind of area are you interested in, what budget?

LiefieLiefie · 13/02/2017 16:40

Working in town near to St Peter's Sq. Really looking for something max 20 mins walk, also happy to look at Didsbury, Chorlton. Upto £750.

Won't really need somewhere until April at the latest, so it's not urgent. Cats won't even be here until May Grin

savagehk · 13/02/2017 16:44

liefie very very frequent bus service in Wilmslow Road gets you straight to St Peter's. You could also consider cycling, my commute is 20 mins on bike (I cycle slowly!).

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 17:17

If you want to live within walking distance, there are a lot of apartments a 20 minute walk or less from there. Your money tends to go further on the north side of the city centre, so Ancoats/Green Quarter type areas in the M4 postcode, and in the parts of Manchester city centre that come under Salford- M3 postcode. My friend used to live in one of the blocks just off Great Ancoats Street, which would be about a 15 minute walk tops, and they had a cat!

You would get somewhere cheaper in Chorlton or particularly Didsbury (West Didsbury in particular can be surprisingly cheap if you don't mind small) but then there would also be the cost of commuting. Chorlton must be really annoying on the trams because although they're really frequent you never get a seat on there in rush hour. Similarly, the bus service along Wilmslow Road is brilliant in that they come along about every 20 seconds, but it can take ages and be rammed.

If you want a 20 minute commute max I would probably be thinking city centre. There are plenty of 1 beds within that price range and some quite a bit cheaper. OTOH, there are 1 beds for sub £500 a month in West Didsbury and I don't think there are in town.

Digitaldolly · 13/02/2017 17:36

Grew up there and used to love it but moved away and now find people very small minded and rude about anyone who move away.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 13/02/2017 17:48

I wouldn't touch the one beds under £500 in West Didsbury. I used to work in property around there. Most of the apartments under £500 are basement flats in old buildings which are fine in other cities but in damp Manchester, that close to the river they are infested with mould. The upper floor flats are a better option but come at a higher price (in general). Barlow Moor Rd from the corner of Palentine through to Siemens on both sides of the road about as far up as Withington hospital has a lot of damp issues and shitty landlords who refuse to do anything about them. It IS a nice area, the bars are great, the 111 bus straight into town (faster than the other buses) and the tram provide quick links and it is close to good parks and both Dids, Cheadle, Northeden and Chorlton but you have to be really, really careful. I know about 30+ people who have lived in studio, one bed and two beds in W Dids and all have had issues with damp and some quite severe mould. Several have had to throw away furniture and clothes. If you go for West Dids aim for north of Withington Hospital.

Ancoats is a great option, it has some great developments and lots of shops springing up. It would be about 15mins depending on whereabouts in Ancoats. For £700 you could get a nice place in NQ too I.e www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-63871943.html

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 18:00

I agree with much of the above, with the caveat that some of the one beds on Palatine Road north of the hospital aren't that nice either. But quite cheap.

RealHouswifeofBury · 13/02/2017 19:02

Love my home city.
The Northern Quarter
The Village
Feeding the squirrels in Heaton park
The shops, bars and restaurants
The Quays
The theatres
The people
All of it ❤

x2boys · 13/02/2017 20:48

RealHouseWife i,m a Bury girl born and bred [moved over the Bolton border] ,Manchester city centre was vastly improved IMO after the IRA bomb destroyed alot of the centre back in 1996

Acornantics · 13/02/2017 20:54

Manchester is utterly charming, smashing and lovely, you're right.

From my teenage wanderings through Afflecks Palace to my early 20s media career there, now our visits with DCs to museums, galleries, libraries, restaurants and shops, it's never lost its appeal for me and we as a family adore Manchester.

We've lived overseas and had the chance to relocate to when we came back, but chose to remain in the NW. It's home.

1DAD2KIDS · 13/02/2017 21:01

I like Manchester, great City.

I also love Coventry (expecting loads of flack). But I do. It's where I was born, raised and have returned to with my family. It also gets a lot of bad press but I see a lot of beauty in my city, it's heritage and it's people. I think the key is not to listen to the critics. Go out, explore and decide for your self if a place feels like home or not. At the end of the day it for you to decide not anyone else.

IndianaMoleWoman · 13/02/2017 21:06

YANBU, although I am from and live in North Manchester, thus I am a Mumsnet pariah.

x2boys · 13/02/2017 21:08

north Manchester is cheaper and more scenic though Indiana and depending on whereabouts really good tram links.
