To adore manchester

Aibu unreasonable to love Manchester and feel more settled here than my home country.

Moved here 20 years ago after coming from home country. So lived here longer than I lived there. I love the people, the accent and just feel so settled. Isn't it funny where you settle and begin to adore. I only came for 6 months. North west always gets a bad press on here!

savage Hiya, sorry - Salford Quays - MediaCity I'm afraid... but I love the idea of walking along the river, one of my great loves of London is following the canal.

scootinFun · 12/02/2017 13:23

I do love Manchester. I get a warm feeling in my heart when the train pulls into Piccadilly after a trip away :)

barinatxe · 12/02/2017 13:25

YABVU. I've never been there but have seen it on the telly, looks awful and I feel sorry for the people who live there.

MrsT2007 · 12/02/2017 13:28

Send it on telly and it looks awful.

That's education right there for you rolls eyes

alltouchedout · 12/02/2017 13:34

I moved to Manchester in 2011. I love it. I think some of the negative posts on this thread are best taken with a pinch of salt- the idea that Manchester is uber white is hilarious and as for it being right wing, come on...

Doobigetta · 12/02/2017 14:47

My partner works in Media city. He drives in- takes about half an hour- but it would be about 45 minutes on the tram including a walk from the station at the other end. Public transport links to media city are unfortunately not great.

Hoppinggreen · 12/02/2017 15:14

Manchester really white??
Very bizarre that people think that.

savagehk · 12/02/2017 15:20

You'd need to change trams, but should be doable. I'm not a tram person ;) there are more buses heading that way too, the 50 is one, but it'd take a while from Didsbury (it starts at East Didsbury, which isn't really Didsbury....)

Doobigetta I'd love the low down on what actually is or isn't Didsbury!

I had a very happy and drunk few years in West Didsbury about a decade ago and am keen to move there again from London. There seems to be a large price discrepancy in similar looking places, so assume these are the Ines where the agents are bending truth on location?!

Quite keen on Chorlton too. Although to ever buy a house we need to save as much as possible - do you know how Withibgton is these days? I have an 18 month old so schools are a consideration I guess but not for a while. Not keen on Trafford area as DS is sunmer born and they are carry hard to get a reception start at compulsory school age!

thewindisscaringme · 12/02/2017 19:12

I left Manchester because of my DHs emotionally abusive psycho ex (kids involved) I fucking love it and would move back there in a heartbeat if the horrible cow vanished off the face of the earth!!!

immathrowstuff · 12/02/2017 19:13

RapidlyOscillating Thanks - I was thinking cycling may be an option, too much of a scaredycat to do it in London though. Really appreciate all the advice. Ta muchly xx

thewindisscaringme · 12/02/2017 19:14

OP saddleworth used to be a nice change for the whit Friday piss ups back in the day Grin

savagehk · 13/02/2017 01:56

Withington is fine, but check out how many student lets are on the particular Street you're interested in, as some bits are also getting a bit studenty.

Happyfeet1972 · 13/02/2017 02:13

There's parts of Manchester where you'd struggle to see a white person....Cheethem Hill is a good example. Not sure where Manchester is getting this image of being some racist all white place from. Some posters seem to be quite ignorant. Manchester is home to many different races.

thecraftyfox · 13/02/2017 02:27

Shantotto, Manchester aren't keen on summer born deferred entry either although some of the academies and rc schools are ok.
It's definitely not a very white city over 30% population are from Asian, Black, Chinese or other backgrounds. Huge EU migrant population too. Labour has 98 of 99 Council seats, no UKIP or BNP candidates elected.
It's got its not so great areas, it is also a very deprived city, basically anywhere outside of Chorlton/Didsbury and the city centre really. Living in one of those parts of Manchester can be very tough. Housing and schools not so great and often poor public transport. Huge cuts to Council budgets haven't helped.

Lived in Manchester proper for 15 years, now live in one of the Greater Manchester towns and commute to city for work. Best of both worlds as I live in the beautiful Pennines and then have the hustle and bustle of Manchester close by when I want it. Husband is Mancunian too and apart from not enough sunshine we love it.

GingerLDN · 13/02/2017 05:03

Quite like some of Manchester but not the Picadilly Gardens area. It's just so rough. I felt intimidated walking around there and especially hated it at night.

shins · 13/02/2017 07:18

Yes and it's the train station area so for many it's their first impression! I also didn't feel safe there at all.

ArmySal · 13/02/2017 12:57

Laughing at Manchester being 'white' Confused

And to the poster who feels sorry for us living here... Don't.

EurusHolmesViolin · 13/02/2017 13:06

Piccadilly Gardens isn't the train station. About a five minute walk between the two, assuming you mean Piccadilly Station. Both are, admittedly, a bit tasty on occasion. Though better than they used to be.

shins · 13/02/2017 13:18

Yes I meant Picadilly Gardens which is a 5 min walk from Picadilly Station. Abd therefore the "train station area" as I said. And it's dog rough.

MaidOfStars · 13/02/2017 13:19

Manchester is almost completely red, as far as politics goes. I have often wondered why the Tories insist on party conferences here - almost like they're goady fuckers. And we voted to Remain in the referendum. And we have the largest student population in Europe. And less than 60% of the population are white British.

How anyone could think Manchester is either white or politically right wing is baffling.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/02/2017 13:25

Don't like Manchester at all but I love love love Liverpool and would love to move their. Currently in Nottingham. Which is meh.

Hopelass · 13/02/2017 13:29

YANBU I grew up south of Manchester, have lived in Castlefield and North Manchester and now in a town north west of Manchester. My first son was born there. I love it.
