AIBU to bag up cereal with pre-portioned sugar to stop the kids wasting it?

I mean a sandwich bag of cereal with another little bag of sugar inside? Currently I'm scraping glued on cereal and sugar off the bottoms of bowls every day! Kids are 7, 10 and 14

Yes they do like weetabix. My dilemma isn't about health, I'm happy for them to have white granulated sugar, but I'm NOT happy about scraping it our of bowls with branflakes glued in like mosquitoes stuck in amber, and I can't see honey solving that dilemma.

I really like the weekly sugar allowance for them. Once it's gone, it's gone. I can see all sort of hiding and bartering going on!

Could you get them to scrape bowls and put them in to soak? Or Can you buy sachets of sugar like the ones found in cafes?

ScuttlbuttHarpy · 10/02/2017 20:51

So your allowed to portion up the lowest sugar cereal's providing you sweeten it with posh expensive honey or stewed fruit. But eggs are better, providing your child eats them of course, my youngest doesn't and I doubt very much he would be satisfied with natural honey and granola for breakfast, he'd be utterly ravenous by lunchtime.

Op, I think you are brilliant for asking, brilliant for not being fussed by the zero sugar brigade, and brilliant for having the very amazing idea in the first place.

So in answer to your question, no you are not being unreasonable for wanting to portion up your cereals with little portions of sugar.

Are you going to put it in tin foil wraps then?

TheOnlyColditz · 10/02/2017 21:14

I'm liking the idea of little weaning pots for the sugar, along with tupperware tubs for the cereal, but I don't like the idea of storing a week's worth of those

OP posts:
TheOnlyColditz · 10/02/2017 21:15

I might well use tin foil wraps and a spoon, yes

mowgelijeffs · 10/02/2017 21:25

I think you need some sort of drugs to get through all the other mums harsh and rude comments ....

mowgelijeffs · 10/02/2017 21:26

Wraps take up less space then the tubs. Wrap the sugar and get a measuring cup for the cereal like you might have for a pet and either leave it in the box of cereal or just throw it on the table in the morning for the kids.

Sugar so refined my mother would have got on with it.

Grin MotherInferior. And I've sprinkled sugar on strawberries too. But I much prefer them with balsamic vinegar. Have you tried that? Wink

AlmostAJillSandwich · 10/02/2017 21:32

Have you considered ricicles instead of rice crispies? same thing but with sugar pr added, so already portioned out and you can see on the box how much is added. Unless its not kellogs rice crispies but the shops own brand ones you buy, then there would be a pretty big price difference.

I dislike rice crispies, weetabix, corn/bran flakes and plain shredded wheat for the very reason they are bland with no sweetness. Special K comes in a few different varieties which are lower sugar and taste really good, shops do their own brand version too, plain or red berries, in tesco and aldi, both still nice tasting.

Spanx. So when people agree with you they're 'offering an opinion', when they disagree with you they're 'bullying'. I think coming on and you feel that you're perfectly entitled to give people lectures on what they can and can't post is fine. But you don't like people taking issue with what you post.

I think you need to think more along the lines of the old adage 'don't dish it out if you can't take it'.

Which is what the OP should have written on a big sign above her sugar bowl too.

SpongebobRoundPants · 10/02/2017 21:34

Give them a crouton and half a cherry tomato, job done.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 10/02/2017 21:36

To the person stating honey is healthier than sugar, it isn't. It is pretty much liquified sugar, the body processes it exactly the same way, it doesn't know the difference.

limitedperiodonly · 10/02/2017 21:38

Turns out putting sugar in a (surgical) wound really really helps.

I think that's because sugar, like salt, has a very low water content, so sucks the water out of bacteria cells and kills them. At least that's what I learned in O level biology.

I'd still refer antibiotics though

limitedperiodonly · 10/02/2017 21:38

I mean prefer

Jenniferb21 · 10/02/2017 21:51

Yes sugar is sugar and honey is mostly sugar but honey contains vitamins and minerals (in small quantities) that sugar doesn't. Honey doesn't break down either so it doesn't need preservatives so you can choose a more natural substance which I view as a healthier option.

Obviously the best solution is no sugar at all but choosing out of the two id always opt for honey.

AYankinSpanx · 10/02/2017 21:52

So when people agree with you they're 'offering an opinion', when they disagree with you they're 'bullying'

No. When people call other posters names for posting perfectly innocuous comments it's bullying.

It's pretty clear really.

limitedperiodonly · 10/02/2017 22:16

I prefer the taste of refined white sugar to honey nearly all the time.

The exception is when I have Sainsbury's own brand muesli, Sainsbury's Basics tinned fruit salad drained of its juice and Sainsbury's Basics natural yogurt. Then I use Sainsbury's Basics honey, not their manuka variety.

Manijo · 10/02/2017 22:22

No to sugar on any cereal even Weetabix

TheOnlyColditz · 10/02/2017 22:27

Manijo, that wasn't the question

Manijo · 10/02/2017 22:34

Why are you adding sugar to cereal?? I must have missed something??

stoopido · 10/02/2017 22:56

I always had sugar on my cereal as a kid. But as and adult I don't and I have never put sugar on my children's cereal so they don't even think to sprinkle some on.
