To think there is nothing you can usefully store on top of kitchen cupboards?

I have a huge gap between top of kitchen cupboards and the ceiling. But I can't use it. I have scoured Pinterest for ideas but I know that anything I put up there will just get greasy and dusty. Or am I just grubby. Does anyone usefully store anything in that space without it getting grimy?

Wall cupboards are so last year Wink

Grin at the popularity of cats on kitchen cupboards. Our big boy cat goes up there (top of oven unit or top of fridge) because he is safe from the younger ones so I think he goes up there for a bit of peace and quiet.

We have two such cupboards. On one side is my Cath Kidston afternoon tea things (there is a good reason for owning "afternoon tea things" honestly), and a Christmas cake circa 2015 (wrapped in greaseproof paper in a large Tupperware).

On the other side is a collection of wine glasses - upside down obviously - and DD's rarely used lunchbox.

The kittens are yet to climb that high, although one did an excellent job of cleaning the gap underneath the cooker this morning Wink.

This is the reason why, when I finally got my new kitchen last year, I asked for the cupboards to go right up to the ceiling - when they took the 35 year old kitchen out they discovered a bag of coffee beans from 1997 behind a pipe Blush - we moved in in 2008.

I have bottles of Pimms, port & Jack Daniels, a decanter, speakers, radio/CD player, my flower vases, G & T glasses (in boxes) and a couple of big platters up there.

I also want to know who does a "deep clean" every week. What is a deep clean? I assume it's more than what I do - wipe surfaces, hoover & mop floor. I don't believe anyone cleans the tops of their cupboards weekly..????

Ceiling high cupboards are the way to go. We had our kitchen completely re-done just over a year ago and that is what was recommended.

Putting other stuff on the top means it gets forgotten and grimy.

Last time we moved house I think we accidentally left some stuff up there and only realized when it was far too late. I would have liked that tray back.....

Kids cereal, two slow cookers, small plastic drawer set for batteries and drawing pins and an actifry.
There's no room up there for any dust Wink
Occasionally annoying though as I'm the only one who can reach without climbing up on the worktop

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 09/02/2017 17:41

Nothing now because I've just cleaned the whole thing

We had unopened hard liquor, a handlebar from a bike, a discarded Xmas pudding circa 2014, a forgotten Christmas present for a teacher, a toy sword that was confiscated after some rough play and then promptly forgotten about, some euros thick with grease and dust so as to resemble a small dead animal Envy , and some posh hot chocolate.

harderandharder2breathe · 09/02/2017 17:43

I can't even reach the top shelf in my cupboards

Bamaluz · 09/02/2017 17:52

I did store spare light bulbs up there until I forgot about them when I was cleaning, and swept them to the floor.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 09/02/2017 17:53

Yes this is why my number one item when we had this kitchen installed was full height cupboards. Absolute must have.

Oblomov17 · 09/02/2017 17:59

I agree. What a stupid waste of space!! We keep kitchen rolls up there.

But how awful that looks!

Bloopbleep · 09/02/2017 18:48

We have leftover tins of prescription formula from when my dd went off milk after a bad bug at 18months. She's almost 8. Probably should clean up there now

PhoenixJasmine · 09/02/2017 18:56

1930s flat so high ceilings, loads of space up there. Paper down on top of cupboards and then things stored in storage boxes so easy to keep clean. Bulk cleaning products (washing up liquid, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner etc) to refill in-use bottles; bulk food supplies - human and pet food!; and my picnic hamper, which looks nice.

It's a major storage spot for me, really I'm kinda worried that there's too much weight up there and one day the whole kitchen will just fall off the wall!

I'd like to replace the storage boxes (currently white/clear plastic) with something smarter, still looking at that.

topcat2014 · 09/02/2017 18:58

I put kitchen rolls, cereal boxes (full) etc up there. Nothing too heavy so easy to get down - but uses the space nicely. Also, nothing stays up there for long.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 09/02/2017 19:03

There's loads of things up there: slow cooker, cake boxes, maslin pan, gert bag of chapatti flour...

Luckily I have freakishly long gibbon arms and can reach things down, everyone else in the house has to stand on something.

MrsLupo · 09/02/2017 19:07

An axe, a hatchet and two pruning saws. For safety's sake, though it doesn't feel like it when I have to get them down (5'4").

Trills · 09/02/2017 19:12

Stuff only gets dusty on the outside.

I wonder sometimes if I should be more "afraid" of dust than I am... Many people seem to take it so seriously.

minisoksmakehardwork · 09/02/2017 19:29

I've got things like my cooking racks up there, empty storage tins and cake boxes, the cool bag and my mixer in its box. Most things are in bags or boxes though so when the grease and dust gets too much I just stick them in a clean one.

livingthegoodlife · 09/02/2017 19:37

This is why I am forever grateful then when I put my new kitchen in I went for ceiling high cupboards. Admittedly I can't reach the top shelves but nothing a handy IKEA step can't solve!

madamginger · 09/02/2017 19:39

I only have one wall cupboard that I can put stuff on and I have 2 ikea boxes on top with baking stuff in one and the kids poster paints and brushes in the other, I also keep my casserole pan up there.
My other wall cupboards are full height to the ceiling.

Baffledonthisone · 09/02/2017 19:43

I'd say nothing if you can afford the space. But I'm a ruthless get-rid-of-it-er, so we have lots of space! Grin
