To think there is nothing you can usefully store on top of kitchen cupboards?

I have a huge gap between top of kitchen cupboards and the ceiling. But I can't use it. I have scoured Pinterest for ideas but I know that anything I put up there will just get greasy and dusty. Or am I just grubby. Does anyone usefully store anything in that space without it getting grimy?

The playdough box and the paint box are up there - it's the only place in the house that ds2 can't reach yet
Other than that, just some dust.

Mine is the same op, and it gets filthy, I can't have an extractor fan over my cooker because I have an open fire in the same room, (carbon monoxide) and it drives me mad because its such a waste of space in my kitchen, but I'm saving for a new kitchen and when I have enough money I will be filling every gap Grin

Confiscated toys - plastic swords/ light sabres used for hitting siblings, toy trumpets (what was Santa thinking).....

I am eternally grateful to MN for suggesting ceiling-high cupboards to me just as I was getting my kitchen done!

CommunionHelp · 08/02/2017 22:45

Tagine, bean pot, large pots that I only cook with occasionally, recipe book holder. Anything that looks attractive as it's visible, but yep. Things getting grimy is annoying and I have to remember to clean everything before it gets minging.

DesolateWaist · 08/02/2017 22:45

Mine is so damn high I can't reach it.
I'm only 5ft3 and my cupboards are so high I need steps to reach the bottom shelves!
There is about 75cm between the top of the cupboard and the ceiling. I can't reach the top of the cupboard, let alone put stuff on it.

I like to keep it clear, well, apart from dust. Space is good, all space does not need to be filled.

Astro55 · 08/02/2017 22:49

Nothing but nothing should be shoved on top of kitchen cupboards it looks dreadful!

I have fairy light which sparkle at Christmas .... that's all

Astro55 · 08/02/2017 22:50

all space does not need to be filled.

We didn't have a plinth on top of our kitchen cupboards. So we have boxes up there. Works for us. All boxes get used frequently. Trofast boxes from Ikea. With lids.

Thats where my parents used to store their cats. Then they got a new kitchen and cupboards higher up specifically to stop the cats from jumping up and sleeping up there. So the now pissed off cats had to find another sleeping spot.

JigglyTuff · 08/02/2017 22:54

I have floor to ceiling cupboards.

Who the fuck does a weekly deepclean? Surely you can find something more interesting to do

JigglyTuff · 08/02/2017 22:55

Oh I store my cat on top of the fridge. Occasionally he topples off behind it and needs rescuing but it's a small price to pay for being king of the kitchen

Astro55 · 08/02/2017 22:59

Now tempted to shove the dog up there - so he's not under my feet whilst cooking!

wonder if DH would fit

morningconstitutional2017 · 08/02/2017 23:02

I keep a few attractive biscuit tins (mostly Christmas presents) up there. They are too nice to throw away and there's no point in putting useful things up so high as I can't reach without a stepladder. I take them down now and again to clean - not as often as I should so they get dusty and grimy. But life's too short to dust.

Imbroglio · 08/02/2017 23:03

I keep a few bits up there in plastic bags. Things like my fish kettle which I never use but don't want to chuck.

DJBaggySmalls · 08/02/2017 23:05

Thats where we keep a giant spider, having no cats.

aquashiv · 08/02/2017 23:05

Nerf guns and that bright noisy toy with lights are stored up there.

unlucky83 · 08/02/2017 23:10

I haven't - I have extra tall cupboards - I have the tops covered in old wallpaper to collect the grease and grime.
If we were planing on staying I would either box it in - with just a thin board painted the same colour as the ceiling - like this kind of thing theinspiredroom.net/2012/08/02/filling-in-that-space-above-the-kitchen-cabinets/
or put the board on hinges and make drop down doors so I could use it for storage.
You can get posh 'lift up' or swing out' hinges so the door would stay open etc - but they need sides to attach to. And seeing as the only things I would put up there would be things I rarely use I would just use standard hinges - so would have to hold it open...
Rather than handles I would look at having those push to open spring fasteners ...
In a new kitchen I would definitely go right up to the ceiling one way or another...
And why I think about it - ime the best way to get rid of that greasy dusting gunge you get on eg the tops of the doors (where you can't cover with paper) is bicarb of soda - a damp cloth dipped into dry bicarb is fantastic at shifting it - haven't come across anything better. Your cloths will get nasty and sticky though and probably only fit for the bin ...so use old ones or rags..or disposable ones...

Allthebestnamesareused · 08/02/2017 23:11

Just my sonos speaker up there - fills the room with tooooooons!

isittheholidaysyet · 08/02/2017 23:17

Yes it gets dusty and grimy, but on top of my cupboards I have...
Champagne glasses
Canteen of cutlery (wedding present, must use it!)
Chocolate coin maker
Snow cone maker
Bubble machine (thinking about it, it's not mine!)
Spare cereal
Popcorn maker
Camping lantern (accessible for a power cut)
And a few boxes which contain...something?

BlondeBecky1983 · 08/02/2017 23:21

Recipe books :)

DevelopingDetritus · 09/02/2017 16:33

Want2bSupermum · 09/02/2017 16:37

We put things in sterlite plastic boxes and clean the boxes once a month. When we move kitchen cabinets will go to the ceiling.

MrsHathaway · 09/02/2017 16:42

Cake tins (the ones for transportation/storage, not baking tins)

Bulk bought cereal

A tin of amaretti biscuits we got for Christmas

Used to have the unused bits for the food processor until I realised I didn't use any of the food processor, and gave it away.
