To expect trousers from the same brand in the same size to be, well, the same size?

I've just bought a pair of trousers from Joseph, tried them on and they are too tight! Right now I am wearing a virtually identical pair (different colour) in the same size as the new ones and they fit perfectly and are comfortable. What the fuck?! The ones I'm wearing are only about a year old.

Obviously I'm going to exchange the new ones for a size up, but how can two pairs of v similarly cut trousers, the same size and from the same label fit so differently?!

I was told, when I queried this in M&S some years ago, that it's because they are produced by a different manufacturer. Not sure that would be the case with Joseph though.

Within a year it's very likely they readjust the fit sizes to recommended averages.

Within one production run there is usually a tolerance of a cm or two.

Are they possibly mislabelled- by that I mean the wrong size label sewn in?

Depending on the fabric but they can also stretch over time and wear.

Almost all companies do not own their factories but use different manufacturers with different sizing patterns. I work for a footwear company and we have 4.

They're definitely too small, I could barely zip them up! I haven't put weight on over the last year either, in fact I've recently lost a bit. Trying them on was a bit depressing and I'm a size 10!

Maybe they are mislabeled - I think I'll have to ask about the sizing when I contact them to arrange an exchange, as I don't want to get another size only for them to be way too big or small.

And ffs you'd think for the money they'd be a bit more consistent.

I tried on 1 pair of jeans and they fitted great, I struggle to find jeans to fit so I bought 3 pairs of jeans from the same shop at the exact same time, the only difference was the colour. When I came to wear the different colours each one was a slightly different size/shape and fit a bit different!
I've had the same with polo neck tops too, I bought different colours of exactly the same top and some were longer than the others, slightly more tight etc.
They're factories must be rubbish if they cant produce tops/jeans of the same size the same

Here's my tale of woe
Asos own brand, standard range dress, size 14
Asos Curve, similar dress (figured it might come up a tiny bit bigger as from curve range), size 24
WTAF. I put them both together and there wasn't any difference in size

That's the thing though - one style of jean in 3 colours might be made in 3 different factories! My 2 pairs of Topshop Jamie jeans are made in different countries.

Also in mass producing the items on top of the cutting pile end up smaller than the ones on the bottom. It is annoying.

I had this problem with Next jeggings. I bought three pairs in different colours. Two of them fitted great, one pair I could barely get past my thighs. Very, very annoying!

I have had this with Next jeans too. Bought one pair and they fitted great. Thought I would get a second pair some weeks later and could not find a pair that fitted like the first ones, even though they were supposed to be exactly the same. I hate buying trousers.

I bought two pairs of M&s jeans on the same day - one in blue and one in darker blue. Both same size, regular length.

One pair (the ones I didn't try on) is 2 inches longer than the other.

This happens a lot with Boden. Have often found a pair of trousers I like order them in a different colour and find the sizing to be not the same. Very annoying.

Happens a lot at GAP too (sometimes with leg lengths too). Assistant there said it's on account of factories sewing to recommended tolerances rather than measurements.

Different colour dyes will cause different amounts of shrinking. Black dye causes the may shrinking I think, so the clothes would be tighter than lighter colours.

Not of "Joseph" league, but for years I've bought the same slippers from M&S. Two pairs, one to wear and the other in the wash. They just look like ballet flats but have a quilted lining so not slipper like.

Bought my two pairs and removed the tags. The new ones after years of standard sizing were like boats. Length the same but too deep. Not a fortune but still £25 down the drain plus having to find different ones so £50 loss. No come back as I should have tried them on.

I understood that now laser cutting is used, ever garment should measure the same.

You'd think they'd allow for that in the manufacturing though tectonic.

I ordered 2 bras in the same style/brand/size from Figleaves/Bravissimo/wherever and the nude one fit but the black one was too small.

Equally annoying is when I can't get anywhere near fastening a pair of size 12 trousers but the size 14 in exactly the same style look like the 'after' photos in a weight loss commercial.

How on earth can there be so much difference and exactly what I am I supposed to do? Losing or gaining a carefully planned amount of weight to fit into one of them is a long term plan but that doesn't help when I have no work trousers to fit me today.

Exactly Barbara, and if I can't be sure on the sizing how do I know whether the replacements will fit?! I tried on a size up a few months ago and they were massive, it was like they were about 3 sizes bigger, not 1!
