There are loads of other threads. But MN aren't highlighting them. Why not? I demand to know.

Who (other than folk on this thread) has said what about demanding passwords?

cozietoesie · 08/02/2017 23:01

Claws

'D' means Democrats, I guess - as in 'Easy to understand. It was them wot dun it.' Wink

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 23:05

The UK media has stopped commenting on them

I wonder what his supporters think? Is he over egging the pudding?

I've said it before - I don't think the risk of terrorism is big in the US. The actual level of risk to individual Americans is very very low. Just like Europe. I am going to France this year and I am going to enjoy it. I am not afraid or worried. I know there have been attacks but that's not a worry.

I am worried about the economy. My job involves schools spending money and parents spending money. That's the priority.

For many Americans, the ones who voted for him - isn't this constant talk about terror and threat a distraction from the economy?

Or is he trying to make people afraid? There's a theory that terrorists should not be given much publicity as they thrive on it. Surely Trump is doing that.

I have no idea what games are being played, who is manipulating who and what the actual thinking is behind all this.

Fly, of course they are different. A Public removal of privacy rights so you can't rely on them in court would be a dehumanisation strategy

But has such a thing been threatened?

Assuming it's true, it would be interesting to see what reasons are given for someone not being allowed into a country.

I know that they don't have to give reasons - but I would hope they could justify their reasons.

I'm guessing Canada does not have a wall with the USA.

ami

This is a nation where, apparently, some 12 million people believe, implicitly, that Earth is ruled by green lizard aliens in people suits. I hold no brief for the collection of the stats but it's certainly a high number. Do you think that they're going to believe 'fake news'? The hard core supporters that is.

I've just caught up and saw the discussion about radicalising youth to far right extremism.

I have to attend training on the prevent strategy for work and one session used two cases to illustrate various things to look out for and how you could deal with it. The two examples they used was a boy getting caught up in Islamic extremism and another getting caught up in far right extremism.

TheClaws · 08/02/2017 23:14

Having read back through the thread a few pages, I caught up on the posts from NoCryinginEngineering. As a corporate writer by trade, I find his tweets excruciating. I don't think he is 'thick', however. He couldn't be where he is without deep intelligence. There are all kinds of intelligence and I have never agreed with the memes depicting him as a baby or an idiot. He isnt.

His administration, however, cannot issue documents or give statements with errors. This reflects a lack of basic fact-checking and proofing. Every organisation must do this from day one. If the President is issuing EOs too quickly for his staff to keep up, employ more staff, or slow down. There are no excuses.

I did have a slight problem with the Washington Post article though: it had an issue with the way DT spelled 'judgement': he spells it the British way, but the WP simply called it incorrect!

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 23:14

Do you think that they're going to believe 'fake news

Having fallen for some fake news myself, I bet I could write some. Just make it believable enough but also outrageous...Make them want to believe.

Of course, given the antics of some of our politicians, you might struggle to separate fake news from real news. Did Cameron really have an incident with a dead pig?

One thing is though - this is a fascinating subject for school children.

What is news?
If you are only told some facts, how do you know what happened?
Can you ever have the full story?
If something isn't in the news, did it really happen?

(1984 territory indeed)

Kelly told a hearing of the House of Homeland Security Committee: “We’re looking at some enhanced or some additional screening.

“We may want to get on their social media, with passwords.

“It’s very hard to truly vet these people in these countries, the seven countries... but if they come in, we want to say, what websites do they visit, and give us your passwords. So we can see what they do on the internet.”

He added: “If they don’t want to cooperate, then they don’t come in to the United States.”

No decision has yet been made, but tighter screening will be implemented in the future, Kelly said.

TheClaws · 08/02/2017 23:25

Is he just sitting at his desk, looking at polls, firing off tweets? The 'President of the United States'? Do you think he has a bathrobe on?

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 23:26

In a room full of sheriffs and law enforcement officers, Trump says the courts are political and that most of the people in the room would probably agree with him.

Meanwhile, his Supreme Court Nominee said Trump's comments were disheartening and demoralising.

Should a President use the 'and I sure you all agree' tactic in front of:

The Army
The CIA
Law enforcement officers

I don't know if this has been posted already but really funny

YourOtherLeft · 08/02/2017 23:40

Re passwords.

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.

But what is it we have to hide, and, importantly, from whom? What if you have a dying relative in the States but are refused entry because you've posted criticism of the "gag order" on Mumsnet? What if you want to get a job in the States but can't make the interview because a friend of a friend posted "Trump is a moron" on FB?

This isn't about profiling, data gathering or snooping. It's about giving every jumped-up, racist, misogynistic immigration control officer the opportunity to turn you away just because he or she doesn't like the look of you. If Trump sets the bar for exclusion low enough, and removes the need for official channels to be followed, many thousands of "normal" non-US folk will find their important travel plans held hostage by little Napoleons all over the US.

For non-US nationals desperate to start a new life and who are almost certainly not dangerous, but who have made unguarded comments on social media that would be protected by the Constitution if they were American citizens, it opens the door to extortion. With a blanket ban or a points base immigration system, you either get in or you don't. With social media screening, immigration control have the option to turn a blind eye if it's made worth their while to do so.

How much is it worth to a potential immigrant fleeing civil war for that one unfortunate tweet to be ignored? Sex? Money? No-one will ever know because there will be no need for anything to be documented.

YourOther

You've hit the nail on the head

amispartacus · 08/02/2017 23:49

This is why I like MN - some people are great at making effective points that others can use.

The link from that is - it makes people afraid to speak out. If they know that comments they make could impact on them later, then they keep quiet...
