Family with two children, one has a name in the top 10 for that year and fairly consistent in popularity throughout history (biblical name - think Matthew and so on.)

The second has a name that's very, very rare.

pictish · 06/02/2017 18:57

Makes me think of two brothers I know. The younger one is called Simon...all very acceptable and normal. The older one got the short straw privilege of carrying his father's name...and his grandfathers name...and his great grandfather's name and so on.
He is called Godfrey.

Sucks to be him.

NotYoda · 06/02/2017 18:57

Hmm

Some children might like that. They might feel special. I suppose you have to see it in the context of the personality of the child and whether there's sibling rivalry.

I've often thought that there's more leeway in naming girls - more choice and less risk of sounding poncey. I had many many names for girls but much fewer for boys

Floggingmolly · 06/02/2017 18:57

What's the name? Unless it's something like Beezlebub, it's highly unlikely the parents decided they hated her from the moment she was born, so deliberately gave her a name everyone would laugh at.

Kmxxx14 · 06/02/2017 18:58

This is how I'd describe my children's names.

One is uncommon. I love it but I do get a lot of comments about it and people not sure how it's pronounced.

The other is very common. It was between that and an uncommon name but I couldn't be bothered with the same comments I and about other Childs name

greeeen · 06/02/2017 18:59

Not odd but it would make me wonder how they decided on the names. However, I like to hear people's reasons anyway so maybe no more than usual.
I would probably assume that it was a let's pick a name each type scenario or that one/both were named after family memebers leading tô very different names.

GeorgeTheHamster · 06/02/2017 19:00

I once knew an adult brother and sister called Simon and Tuesday. I did always think it odd. Turned out she had changed her name from Sarah!

coldeveningwarmpudding · 06/02/2017 19:02

Girls name is Jowanet

Boys name is Jonathan.

OP posts:
BarbarianMum · 06/02/2017 19:02

Well we picked our names because they are our favourite boys names. Whether they were unusual or popular didn't come into it. Isn't that what people do ?Confused

PuppyMonkey · 06/02/2017 19:03

I find it impossible to say whether YABU or not until I know what the names are. And please don't say that's irrelevant OP. Confused

Shockers · 06/02/2017 19:03

My sister had a name that was very different to mine and my brother's.

She really hated it and felt like the less preferred child because of it.

Not true, but hers was very unusual at the time she was born. It still is.

NotYoda · 06/02/2017 19:04

Blimey

That is unusual

PuppyMonkey · 06/02/2017 19:04

Cross post !

Erm never heard of the first one. They both begin with J though, maybe that's the theme?

MistressMolecules · 06/02/2017 19:05

I find this thread odd but none matching names not odd. Names don't have to 'match' especially in terms of popularity.

NotYoda · 06/02/2017 19:06

Well, a quick google says Cornish, and a female variant of John. Interesting

TooSmittle · 06/02/2017 19:06

My DD has a very rare name, old fashioned and I've never met or heard of anyone with that name. DS has a super standard name. I couldn't give a toss that they're different in that way, in fact it's never even occurred to me until now. The reasons their names were chosen were very special to us and both children will learn about those reasons in due course.

Now I'm wondering if people think it's weird! I still don't care though.

BaronessBomburst · 06/02/2017 19:07

I'm not even sure how to pronounce it. Confused
I want to know what your warm pudding of choice is, please OP!

user87654321 · 06/02/2017 19:09

This thread is odd. And very uptight.

APlaceInTheWinter · 06/02/2017 19:12

I would find Jowanet an odd choice regardless of what her sibling was called. It's lining up a lifetime of spelling her name out loud, correcting how its pronounced, having to field questions about its origin, and whether or not it's a boy's name.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2017 19:18

Yes I think the name is odd regardless of anything else. How is it pronounced?

reuset · 06/02/2017 19:19

I stand corrected, OP. That is unusual, you are right Grin

Ah, so if, as previous poster has said, Jowanet is a var of John, then it does 'go' with Jonathan...vaguely

Floggingmolly · 06/02/2017 19:22

Were the parents drunk when registering their dd? It sounds like they started to say Joanna and changed their mind to Janet at the last minute, but didn't notice that they registrar had taken the hybrid word to be the actual name...

reuset · 06/02/2017 19:23

I think it's not so bad, there are far worse names out there. Do any Cornish posters recognise it?

Crunchymum · 06/02/2017 19:23

DC1 has a top 10 name, DC2 wasn't even in top 100.

Not particularly 'matching names' but not world's apart?

I know someone who has a Roman and a Tommy. Both fine names but just don't 'go' to my ear. No judgement though and certainly better than calling them Bill and Ben.

Crunchymum · 06/02/2017 19:24

Jowanet.

Fuck me. Nothing would match that surely?

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2017 19:25

Jowanet seems like a typo of Janet.
