Family with two children, one has a name in the top 10 for that year and fairly consistent in popularity throughout history (biblical name - think Matthew and so on.)

The second has a name that's very, very rare.

No and does it matter?

Perhaps I'm the only one, but yes, I would find this, if not odd, then certainly curious.

Not because siblings need to 'match' but more because, typically, parents fall on one side or the other of the traditional vs quirky name fence.

I can also see how it's possible one child would be annoyed they had a boring or unusual name when their sibling doesn't.

ssd · 06/02/2017 18:04

I think there aren't many things you could do worse to a child than give them an arsey name like a lot of them on mn

It isn't relevant to the thread Navy

I have one with a very commonplace name (unintentionally; I thought it wasn't that common) and one with a very uncommon name. It's fine.

I wouldn't choose Tarquin to go with Gary though, for instance.

Agree sibling names don't have to 'go' match or be similarly popular

Tell us the name, it might not be as unusual as you think.

coldeveningwarmpudding · 06/02/2017 18:14

Yes, but how I know the child isn't remotely relevant navy so please stop asking, thank you

Navy

I don't think she's going to answer.

RebeccaCloud9 · 06/02/2017 18:17

My bf when I was at school had a really rare name (I must admit that as a teenager, I really hated it and it's the kind of name that people did laugh at) but his brother and sister had really standard, normal names. I could never understand why they had done that to him! I think he liked being individual though.

harderandharder2breathe · 06/02/2017 18:17

Jeez OP, relax. It's a very odd statement that the child thinks her parents love her less, that's all.

I would notice but I wouldn't comment on it because that's very rude. A friend has two dc with modern names and one old fashioned, I notice it but I've never questioned her about it. They love all three equally.

SasBel · 06/02/2017 18:18

Just realised that my DC's names not only match each other but mine and DH's too.... Shock

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 06/02/2017 18:18

This thread is ridiculous, does anyone really give a crap about what other people name their kids?! Confused It literally wouldn't cross my mind to have an opinion. I think you'd have to be very self-absorbed to think anyone would care tbh.

GU24Mum · 06/02/2017 18:19

It's not that odd/unusual for two siblings but I guess I'd feel more curious if there was one unusual name out of more especially if they are all the same gender - eg a Thomas/George/James and Archimedes. I certainly wouldn't assume they loved some more than the others though!

Sasbel

Are they Harry, Harriet, Harvey and Harmony?

BalloonSlayer · 06/02/2017 18:20

I think it's odd.

But sometimes parents don't see names how others do.

I know a couple with two DDs, one has a name that makes me think of a beautiful ethereal creature (think Willow or Skye or similar) and the other one has a name that makes me think of a great lump of a kid (think Bessie or similar) [names have been changed] But I expect the parents think both names are "beautiful DD" names and would think I was mad to see them like that.

JaniceBattersby · 06/02/2017 18:21

I don't think it's massively, odd to have non-matching names. My kids' names don't 'match'. However, I would think it odd if one were called, for example, John, and another was called Twinkle Toes.

Anything in between I wouldn't even notice.

TheresABluebirdOnMyShoulder · 06/02/2017 18:22

I was coming on here to agree with you (not that I care what other people call their kids, but that I personally would find it curious) but actually you've got a bit of an attitude going on OP.

notangelinajolie · 06/02/2017 18:23

I often see posts from Mnetters asking for names that match but can't say I have come across it in RL. My eldest have long grand names names and my youngest has a fun short name which tbh is probably due to letting my DC's have some imput. So no, odd names don't sound odd to me at all!

coldeveningwarmpudding · 06/02/2017 18:25

I haven't intentionally got an attitude, but didn't want to get into how I know the child, as it's not relevant. Apologies if that's come across as an attitude.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/02/2017 18:27

I would think it curious. All my friends considered how the names sounded together when they chose name for second dc.
