To be annoyed at weaning fanatics

Am I just being overly sentiitive/protective here?

Since DS hit the 3 month mark, everyone and their dog seems adamant that I should be introducing solids.

I am waiting for the 6 month mark because I want to do baby led weaning, DS seems totally happy with milk and the NHS recommends it. It just makes sense to me.

DS is a big boy and was 9lb 2oz at birth. He's a chunk! Sometimes he sleeps through in 6 hour blocks but recently the 4 month growth spirt has kicked in and he's waking every 3 hours for feeds. Fine with me, he's going through the growth spirt. He needs the extra milk.

My DM, Sis, MIL and a handful of friends seem to be obsessed with when I'm gonna feed him solids. One friend and MIL in particular don't seem to want to let it drop.
'Is he sleeping through yet? 'You need to give him baby rice/purees'

Appreciate people are excited but I'm sick of the constant insistence that I should be weaning him. Growth spirt = extra milk feeds. Not selfishly feeding him things his tummy can't handle yet just so I can get some extra sleep. If anything it'll probably do the opposite as he's had tummy troubles lately.

Untill now I've been polite about it.
'No he's not ready yet, he's shown no signs of wanting more than milk'

I'm on the verge of changing this to
'Will you please drop it! He's my son and I'll wean him when I decide it's time!'

AIBU to be so pissed off about this?
When did you guys wean? Did you wait for the 6 month mark or wean earlier? Did it work for you?

Thank you for reading my essay

Rugbyplayersarehot Thanks Smile It's hard to remember that sometimes!

LaurieMarlow That's really interesting - I'd love to see the guidelines from other European countries. I'm going to give that a google

We started with fruit at five months on the paediatrician's recommendation. I thought we would wait until six months as per the guidelines but she was clearly ready as she had already been sneakily licking our fruit as we are. Tell everyone that you follow the current guidelines so unless they're paediatricians they should leave you be.

Ds was 4 months when I weaned him 3 years ago now. I had the 'you were weaned at 6 weeks, never did you any harm' comment. I decided to wait with Dd (6 months on thursday) I caught Dh's grandma give her a crust of bread a few weeks ago and she got it stuck. I was extremely annoyed! Some people just don't give a shit what you want to do. They think they know better. I've started a bit of porridge in the mornings because she sits well, lost the reflex in her mouth that pushes food out ect. As soon as she hits 6 months I will introduce veg (not pureed). You know your baby best and if what your doing is working for you all then stick to it and ignore others.

I thought they were changing advice again, and going back to four months? Something about higher levels of allergy because foods are introduced too late?

Also, I had a couple of very small prem babies (foster carer), and was advised to wean them earlier than a full term baby. That was in 2010, 2012.

Op hungry baby food means 'harder to digest' - it takes longer to digest so they last longer between feeds.

I tried it once and it was a total disaster - tummy ache and constipation and crying.

Fwiw - and if you think about the general history of babies and feeding then: puréed food in jars corresponds to mass production of food and the use of formula. If you're feeding an (at that time) unscientifically fabricated food like formula (which in my mums day was Carnation condensed milk - as described in Dr Spock in the 1960s) then you might as well be weaning asap and if the same company is selling you the idea of purée as the next 'thing' you go with it.

Purée as first food is a modern invention- as is 'baby' rice.

Do why you feel OP and smile
