I got the following text:

HMRC has completed your tax review, £262 is outstanding to be paid back to you, Please use secure link to process your refund.

AIBU to be suspicious?

Don't they just pay extra with your next pay date?

Thanks

So they do refund tax, because I had a hefty refund this year, which was amazing!

But, they make it really bloody difficult for you 😊 So this is definetly a scam

Letter inpost
Complete online form
Must provide evidence it's you, from P60 or passport (maybe it was both)
Generally it logs you out so you have to wait a week for it to reset so you can get back on...

Or you get the letter and wait six weeks :)

They never make it easy 😊

Oldraver · 04/02/2017 13:16

We haven't had a tax refund for a couple of years ago now but HMRC always just sent a cheque..it was nearly always a surprise

It's a scam doing the rounds.Along with the scam Paypal email.

Elledouble · 04/02/2017 13:22

Scammy scam scam.

I got a tax refund via my wage slip once - it was massively more than I usually got paid so I rang HMRC in a panic thinking I'd have to pay it back. They told me I'd been on the wrong tax code for ages and had been trying to get in touch with me to give me my money back - and that I was due another couple of thousand! I might have said "holy shit" on the phone to their advisor Blush

They sent me a cheque for the rest.

I have a 10 year old HMRC cheque fro £50. Is it too late to cash it?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/02/2017 13:33

Of course it's a scam. HMRC do not contact anyone in that way.

HMRC don't actually contact the vast majority of tax payers. If you have no requirement to submit a tax return (which most basic rate tax payers paying PAYE don't) you don't hear from them.

Olympiathequeen · 04/02/2017 13:35

Scam

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/02/2017 13:37

Seems like a lot of Mners are getting these hmmmmm.......... I wonder HOW they get our info?

They are not getting your info. They have an email address from any one of the dozens/ hundreds of sites even where you entered an email address and it's been sold / passed on/ hacked.

GrumpyOldBag · 04/02/2017 13:43

Yes it's a scam. I've had several like that from HMRC.

Ignore it.
