AIBU to hate crowdfunding?

Recently I've been sent several links to crowdfunding or just giving sites because some poor sod has gone on holiday without insurance and now needs a fortune to get home or someone has died with life/funeral cover and donations are requested. AIBU or should these pages be for people who actually knew or know (and cared about) the person? I feel our culture is now even more encouraging people to think don't worry about it someone else will pay. So.....am I on the express to hell?

Sundial I'm a STEM academic. I've seen a handful of interesting ideas get off the ground by crowdfunding. Now? You can't find them for the dross.

You work in STEM but cannot figure out where to go to look for legitimate investiment oppertunities as opposed to the "please fund a ribbon for tiddles campaign" (Tiddles being a 6ft male with a fetish for dressing up as a cat)?

You work in STEM but cannot figure out how to scan email for please feather my nest as opposed to please be a part of a fab new development.....

Righooooo...

I didn't say that. I said that legitimate sites have been swamped by dross. All very well saying 'delete' but it's making it impossible to use these sites for how they were intended (because nobody believes you aren't begging). I agree, there are other routes to crowdfund your latest research idea, it's just a shame is all.

Also, I was drunk last night so barely making sense anyway Grin
