Commutes

How long a commute do you think is feasible for a single mum.

Applying for a job 40 miles away so 80 miles driving a day x 5 days a week

Aibu for considering this

I think with grandparents supporting you will be ok.

I think it depends on when you are travelling, and whether or not the journey time varies. I had a similar length journey a few years ago, which was an hour but only if you left before 715 in the morning. So part of the stress was having to be on time and not even being five minutes late leaving.

I used to commute 42 miles a day each way, luckily I had someone to lift share with. It was 95% motorway and the most soul destroying commute of my life.

I also had a commute that was just over an hour but only 20 miles (public transport) - I found this easier but still not good.

It definitely depends on the scenery, I used to love motorway driving before that commute but it's just mind-numbing now.

I'm a single mum and I commute 2 hours door to door to work and back, 4 days a week. But on the train. Not ideal. Money is what's keeping me doing it as i have no £ from exP. But have good support from my parents and friends locally who could pick up DD from school if necessary.

I wouldn't. I think my limit is 40 miles total a day. Half an hour or so each way.

I only work a mile away from home now so I'm totally spoilt, but I used to work 15 miles away and snooze on the bus. A long car commute is soul destroying.

Has to be a terrific job to kill 2 hrs of your life every day to do it.

HeadDreamer · 07/02/2017 19:36

Depends on the actual time you need to drive that 40miles. It takes me 1 hour most days to do 35 miles. (On very good days it can be done in 45min). I also do 7-4.30 and work from home one day a week. I think it will be very tiring to do 5 days a week. But not sure if you are talking about full time. You should be ok with childcare as you have grandparents for emergency.
