to regret giving my postman a Christmas tip and confront him on Saturday am?

I do a fair bit of online shopping and shock horror, have a 9-5 job. I have told my postman (David W) to PLEASE LEAVE PARCELS AT THE DOOR (it's sheltered and not in view of the street) and I also have a yellow A4 sign to that effect permanently displayed. I thought we had an understanding now and gave him £10 at Christmas which he seemed very pleased with.

But lo and behold today, when I'm expecting a LARGE parcel, oh, I have a "sorry we missed you" card signed from him. It's not even a "signed for" parcel so why did he not just leave it at the door? Am I right to suspect he never had it with him in the first place?

I have booked a redelivery online for Saturday am. WIBU to ask for a refund of the tip?!!!

A tip is for service rendered. Maybe he wants a top up.

allchattedout · 02/02/2017 19:37

you do realise that if a signature is needed, they can't leave parcels on the porch?

Dontlaugh · 02/02/2017 19:38

If you work 9 - 5, presumably in an office environment, could you have your parcels delivered there? Surely there's a mail room? Or use parcel motel etc?
Posties get the sack for leaving registered post on doorsteps.

Ooft, snuggles up to AnyFucker to watch proceedings Wink

Popcorn anyone?

exWifebeginsat40 · 02/02/2017 19:39

poor David Walliams :(

ChickenVindaloo2 · 02/02/2017 19:40

I wasn't being serious about asking for the tip back. Soz if that wasn't obvious. But I am miffed that he is happy to leave the wee small parcels but not the big one.

Of course YABVU and very rude to consider asking for the tip back,

You do know that no mater how big and no matter what colour sign you put on your door....and no matter how loud you shout, you do not get to tell the Royal Mail how to do their job. Imagine if every house set their own delivery conditions? Just let him do his job and go and collect your parcels like everyone else who has a 'shock horror' 9-5 job.

AVY1 · 02/02/2017 19:42

Some companies specify that parcels cannot be left, signature or not.

Might not be anything to do with him (although I do sympathise with the frustration of not getting a parcel). Or he was thinking that leaving a large parcel is far more noticeable than something that can be hidden and he was trying to be thoughtful.

fassbendersmistress · 02/02/2017 19:43

joannegrady said it better than me!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/02/2017 19:44

Popcorn, popcorn! Get your popcorn here!
Maybe, Oo I dunno, that he forgot who the hell you were. You know what with having loads of parcels to deliver. But please, complain to the post office and come back and tell us how you get on

AmeliaJack · 02/02/2017 19:44

Do you think perhaps it's because the large parcel is more obvious at your door and therefor more likely to be stolen?

And being larger and therefore probably more expensive that if it had been stolen that you might be a little tetchy about it?

Poor David is just doing his job. Be nice.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 02/02/2017 19:44

our posties used to leave stuff all the time, but a couple of years back they stopped and you have to go to the sorting office in town

I asked why they had changed their policy so suddenly and the gist of the conversation was that if no one uses the sorting office for collecting parcels then they will close it down.

I presume they have had a stay of execution, as they now do leave stuff on occasion, but i know I'd rather zip 10 mins to town than have to go further afield

Serialweightwatcher · 02/02/2017 19:46

He probably thought that even if you're not in full view of the street that a large parcel may attract attention if anyone else went up your drive ... he was probably just being cautious - I usually ask them to leave in green bin if it's not too full so people wouldn't be able to see anything infront of door

RebelRogue · 02/02/2017 19:46

Well it was a large parcel. That's worth at least a 15£ tip. It was a warning so you are prepared next xmas Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/02/2017 19:46

Fleuricle please tell us you lived in Greendale.

AyD0 · 02/02/2017 19:46

This is HILARIOUS. I honestly really do wonder WinkGrinGrin

MuttsNutts · 02/02/2017 19:48

You don't sound very bright.

  1. Large parcels aren't delivered by the usual postie - they come by van.
  2. Advertising with a large yellow sign to anyone that happens to come to your door that you regularly have deliveries left on the doorstep is a very stupid thing to do.
babyapril · 02/02/2017 19:50

£10 is a rubbish tip.
You'll have to grease his palms once more!

Booklover123 · 02/02/2017 19:55

Poor postie! Try treating him with some respect and friendliness, he could have just forgotten your parcel arrangement, you are not his only customer and TBH £10 is rather a stingy tip for year long service!

chasingrainbows27 · 02/02/2017 19:55

What if he left it outside and it was such a big and conspicuous parcel that it got stolen?

Would you ask for your money back then?

YABU.

fleuricle · 02/02/2017 19:55

ohwhatfuckery

Nah, not Greendale. Remote part of Scotland.
He really WAS called Pat. tho.
As far as I know - whole village called him that, anyway.
Sometimes he'd stop for a cup of tea, if it was a stormy day.
He was luffly.
And about 97.
I didn't have my breasts out whilst he had the tea, btw Grin

Babasaclover · 02/02/2017 19:57

Most people tip their post men a lot more than £10! Maybe he is rebelling as wanted more. Cheeky but probably true!

Zanymummy · 02/02/2017 19:59

My friend lost her job as a postie for leaving a parcel at the front door that went missing. They can leave it in a safe place if they know of one but sometimes things happen for example where I stay chancers were following the postie and stealing them once posties were gone so they had to stop the safe place for a while or until the Police got someone for it. He probably didn't like leaving the card x
