Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

Grin ooh I didn't ever see Pete, I loved Carl Cox, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Billy Nasty, Laurent Garnier and loads more I can't remember. I took Laurent Garnier for a pie once.

Frankie I bring you Neurodancer

1 minute 30 still gives me rushes in the car!

fairraid · 07/02/2017 22:56

Most of the people I know who were on the rave scene now have children and have decent jobs. People went to college and did part time jobs then let off steam at the weekend. It was all good Smile

Yes I am a suitable qualified organic chemist, and I assure you cote that it's perfectly possible not to have good quality control!

I understand the point re wanting to be master over your own bodies, and I can agree with that. What I find more irritating is that I cannot do activities that are legal, but because I have a certain disease, companies choose not to serve me because they think it's not good for me!

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 07/02/2017 23:01

FrankiesKnuckle Oh I remember this Grin 🎶 🎶 🎶

And now I'm off to bed Smile

SarcasmMode · 07/02/2017 23:44

I've only ever done cannabis but only ever judge drug use when it harms someone else. My Mum and sister had tried all sorts when younger. I may have done too if didn't have existing MH issues.

I think people like to state how clean they are because that's what everyone wants to hear. But it isn't really.

I've been messed up on alcohol whereas someone on Es or acid etc might have been in complete control and in that case I'd think they were being more responsible.

Just like sex before 16 I think being given the right information and a safe environment and an open discussion on the negatives is better than pushing your child/friend into a dangerous situation.

Fabsmum · 08/02/2017 00:18

That's my sister singing on that track at Disco Storia Progressive 90

She's a knackered middle aged teacher now...

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 08/02/2017 00:19

Cote that is one of oldest favourites..

avamiah · 08/02/2017 00:28

I grew up in Liverpool in the late 80's and used to love my Saturday nights out in the city centre and going clubbing.
I think it was different times then and less violence to be honest .
Memories, I've got few.
Haha

perhapsiwill · 08/02/2017 06:35

Oh I missed the party last night! Some nice tunes to wake up to though. Thanks 😄
Did anyone ever get into gabba ? Or is that going a bit far Confused sounds awful now but I loved it!

'Age of love' and 'trip to the moon' took me right back. Thanks Cote and frankie and everyone else!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/02/2017 07:17

Never gabba, but we did used to do all the free parties squat parties in London and listen to some dirty techno. I was never really into house/trance kind of music really.
I remember going to a squat party near to/ under the arches at archway tube (bit hazy) and some lads let off fireworks indoors and I actually thought we were all going to die. Or when the police would shut the parties down and we'd be Stepping out of this squat into bright sunshine in the middle of London, absolutely wasted.

Happy days Smile

surferjet · 08/02/2017 07:28

I grew up in the 80's / 90's - never took drugs and didn't mix with anyone who did. Thers's a stigma around drug users that never really goes away, no matter how 'fashionable' some people think it is. ( probably why most people keep quiet about it )

perhapsiwill · 08/02/2017 07:32

Haha or dancing in a field and then the sun is coming up and you would start seeing people walking their dogs or out on their mountain bikes and then feel all dirty and wrong!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/02/2017 07:46

Surfer I don't think I ever thought I was cool, and never thought drugs to be fashionable. This was late 90s early 00s, I'm not sure how it is now. I think we saw ourselves as disaffected and displaced, but never cool or fashionable; our group was a right bunch of oddities, but in our drug fuelled days we found meaning and security. I know this sounds cliched and probably isn't the same for everyone, but this group of friends was the first time I ever felt accepted socially.

Op, I remember doing acid one night and getting home just as my dad was leaving for work. Vaguely remember an interesting conversation, where I tried to be normal....thankfully I think he thought I was drunk, not tripping my head off!
