Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

"They all died."

Haha no we didn't.

CoteDAzur · 02/02/2017 18:31

Well I wasn't running in the same decade as I was doing drugs.

I was do fit and slim from all the dancing when I was doing drugs that I didn't need to do any sports Grin

farfarawayfromhome · 02/02/2017 18:36

I'm here ! As are all of my friends. We all have responsible senior jobs now, earning high salaries and commanding a lot of professional respect. I own and run three successful businesses.

If only people knew.....

maggiethemagpie · 02/02/2017 18:38

It's a long time since I've been clubbing and I will admit to being slightly wild in my younger days. I've now grown out of all that but have discovered clubbercise! Aerobics with glowsticks to dance music, funny how much more energy I suddenly get when a drum and bass tune comes on!

Count2three · 02/02/2017 18:47

I took shit loads most weekends at uni and loved it. Now have a family and despite being a SAHM, had a management job before. Perhaps interestingly, I'm a recovering alcoholic (11 years sober); it was the booze that got me after the drugs had finished!

StorminaBcup · 02/02/2017 18:50

My friend who is a well-respected Dr has been involved in research around MDMA and hallucinogen use in treatment for PTSD and trauma. They get legally made substances from a particular manufacturer.

Magic mushroom chemical psilocybin is also being used to depression, OCD and anxiety. There's a recent study which conducted a clinical trial in cancer patients.

I like the renaissance cd's for running. There's no way I could run to Clarkee and Sharkey - the warm up would do me in!

shins · 02/02/2017 18:50

This thread has made me long to go out and get completely off my tits and dance to repetitive beats in a field til 5am while chewing my own face off.

However, I need to pick my daughter up from running club, load the dryer and make a shopping list for tomorrow's trip to Lidl. Maybe I'll have a nice cup of tea instead.

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 18:54

I hammered it in the nineties and early noughties. E's, speed and cocaine mainly but dabbled a bit with GHB, LSD & ketamine too. I know I had some amazing nights out but I can't remember much and the come downs we're dire.

Now, I'm a married professional with a family. I do still hanker for a line or a pill when I hear the music of yesteryear but there's too much to lose now if it all went wrong.

Would I talk about my colourful past with the MC mums at the school gates? Noooooo!

CoteDAzur · 02/02/2017 18:55

"while chewing my own face off."

That's why God invented chewing gum Grin

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 18:56

Maybe we should organise a masked rave Grin

shins · 02/02/2017 18:57

I'm nearly 45 and I'd be honestly afraid I might drop dead though. Which would be SO embarrassing Shock

Crowdblundering · 02/02/2017 18:58

Here waves

WineIsMyMainVice · 02/02/2017 18:59

I feel your pain op. Take some comfort that we are all around you! And when Needed occasionally, some of us can be found putting an old recording on and dancing like no one is watching!

Fallonjamie · 02/02/2017 19:03

My mate literally chewed the first few layers off the inside of her cheek at Glastonbury one year. She kept swallowing the bloody spit so didn't notice for ages. To all those saying how ghastly and proof that drugs are baaaad. It was a fairly unique experience to injure yourself like that.

She's a headteacher now Smile

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 02/02/2017 19:03

Interesting you say that. As I understand mdma is being trialled in family therapy and for people recovering from trauma

Lord that's given me some images on the family therapy side Grin

I still do Glastonbury every year. Only soft food from day 3 Grin

Another vote for a masked rave here Grin

californiansunrise · 02/02/2017 19:23

Here!

Started doing pills in the 90s in 6th form (as did many others at my naice girls grammar school). Got to uni to discover that the whole floor in my halls also did them, so carried on fairly regularly. No casualties - everybody now holds down good jobs - a mixture of teachers, solicitors, police, psychologists, all sorts.

Carried on with pills and a bit of coke intermittently throughout my 20s with a couple of work friends and ex boyfriends. It's therefore my experience that drug use is pretty widespread.

Haven't touched anything for almost 10 years now and as a parent, I wouldn't risk my health. But my god if I could go back in time for just one night...MDMA is the best feeling in the world.

There are incidentally a couple of mums at school who I suspect may have partaken back in the day. I'd love to know!

IJustLostTheGame · 02/02/2017 19:23

A mumsnet maked rave?
Let's all get together and throw some shapes!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 02/02/2017 19:25

No we didn't all die fuck knows how with the amount consumed tbh
Ahhhh the (late) 90's, they really were fun Grin

DangerousBeanz · 02/02/2017 19:28

Teachers, a lot of them are teachers, or lawyers, or an OFSTED inspector That I know, a couple of acountants, a social worker and a surgeon.

FindoGask · 02/02/2017 19:29

Hello! Lots of hash and mushrooms at sixth form, ecstasy at university and afterwards, and the occasional line of coke here. Then children so everything stopped bar the grass, which I still smoke most weekends.

I would definitely do mushrooms again, and acid, and decent MDMA. Not cocaine though. I'd love to try other stuff like peyote too, I looked into cactus-growing a while back. But I won't be touching anything illegal (apart from the grass) till our children are grown, which won't be for a while yet.

StorminaBcup · 02/02/2017 19:30

A mumsnet maked rave

I had to read that twice! I thought things had escalated quickly Grin

Darthvadersmuuuum · 02/02/2017 19:31

I wouldn't even know where to get anything from these days looks up old connections on fb

Moodywomann · 02/02/2017 19:32

This thread has made me so nostalgic. Cream, Garlands, Hac, Sankeys, Paradise Factory, Turnmills, Trade, cheesy raves, squat parties, 'the dance tent' at every festival.. years of my life. Things are ahem, somewhat different now.

I'm only coming to the masked rave if I'm on the list though Bear obvs.
