Trump just suggested he was “tough” with the PM of Australia because Australia “takes advantage of us.” How so?

GigotdAgneau · 02/02/2017 15:16

Ginger, I am appalled by him full stop. I see no good at all in the man.

A draft of an executive order says the government will not force individuals or organizations to engage in activities that may “violate their conscience.”

This only applies if you share the exact values of Pence and Trump though. I am sure plenty of individuals and organisations will be required to "violate their conscience" if their conscience tells them that turning in migrants, refusing help to refugees, or denying a woman her reproductive rights is wrong. Surely those universities and sanctuary cities that Trump is threatening with funding withdrawal/the feds are acting on conscience.

GigotdAgneau · 02/02/2017 15:32

The thing is, after the American people have had freedom of speech for so many years, Trump can't just stop them from saying no to him if they disagree with what he and his supporters are doing. The American people will protest, and unfortunately for him, they will protest in larger numbers than those who attended his inauguration. I really hope that he won't manage to curtail freedom of speech. I believe the American public won't roll over and play ball with him, though it may take some time. I don't imagine there has ever been this level of protest in the first month of an incumbent president? Or am I just a naive LibDem?

Maybe Arnie should propose a job swap, it's obvious Trump is miffed at not doing Apprentice anymore and would probably be overjoyed at getting it back.

At this rate I'd prefer Arnie over the Donald any day.

Australia “takes advantage of us.” How so?

I guess that's the core of Trump's vision that some buy into.
America the all-powerful but let down by terrible leaders who didn't even try to get good deals for USA.

Funny enough I was trying to explain to one of my teenagers, that when you help your neighbour get richer, both you & your neighbour are both happier. Not just morally... but more equity all-round means you don't have to worry so much that your neighbour is going to come try to steal your stuff.

Trump bucks breakfast tradition by calling for prayers for Schwarzenegger usat.ly/2k4dex3

GingerIvy · 02/02/2017 15:41

I'll put it here because it is just so appallingly bad... how can anyone respect this??? AT A PRAYER MEETING!!!!
_

Speaking at a National Prayer Breakfast unlike most before it, President Trump on Thursday said the nation has to be "tougher" in dealing with other countries, pledged to make it easier for religious groups to engage in politics — and asked the crowd to pray for his successor as host of The Apprentice.

"The ratings are right down the tubes" since Arnold Schwarzenegger took over as host of his former program, Trump said. "It's been a total disaster ... I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can."

Trump constantly referenced himself during his remarks, talking at one point about how people often greet him with five words that warm his heart: "I am praying for you." He also said "so many faith leaders" have been "very, very important people to me."

At another point, Trump referenced foreign policy, telling members of the prayer breakfast not to worry about reports of his "tough" phone calls with world leaders.

"We're being taken advantage of by every nation in the world, virtually," Trump said. "It's not going to happen anymore."

The president, as he did during the campaign, also vowed to repeal the "Johnson amendment," which forbids tax-exempt religious organizations from making political contributions or otherwise engaging in campaigns.

Striking religious themes, Trump spoke of the power of faith and prayer and said "this gathering is a testament to the power of faith."

In paying tribute to the prayer breakfast — a bipartisan Washington tradition — Trump also made a joking reference to his 2020 re-election bid.

"I hope to be here seven more times with you," he said.

Also: another leak, this in relation to abolishing the EPA. Shock

It's been a while since I posted but have been avidly reading - thanks to you all as always for your insightful opinions and fascinating links.

Just wanted to say I am so so nervous about this 'religious freedom' EO. Curbing peoples civil rights on the basis of such fundamental things as sexual orientation and gender is so damaging and sends the US back to the dark ages.

I've got a busy evening with DC tonight but will be checking in regularly as it seems anything breaking is reported here first Grin

Lweji · 02/02/2017 15:55

I blame the MN site.

Anyway, in case anyone is thinking of leaving the US, here's a list of possible countries.

But we'll be extreme vetting US passport holders.

Yes, please. Even as a Republican at least he cares for the environment and has a sense of humour.
