Yesterday I thought Trump was stupid because his Muslim ban sent the message that he would shit on Iraqi people who helped in the fight against ISIS.

Today he is showing that the loyalty of countries like Australia counts for nothing.

How long can this continue?

amispartacus · 02/02/2017 08:08

'Robust and shorter than expected'.

That's diplomatic talk......

I would love to know what petitions are starting in Australia now.

The Australian business is on radio 4. They have said Trump spokesman said the conversation with Australia was 'robust and shorter than expected' Hmm

Morning all. Thought some of you might want to sign this, Conversation therapy isn't even the worst of Pence's views, and he (like others around Trump), want to impose many of those views legally on all of us.

Twitter and the written press are really picking up on the Garage thing now. Seb Dance might be my hero today...

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

Malcolm Turnbull, who has spent much of this week defending government secrecy over his phone conversation with Donald Trump, has just been done a favour by the forces of media scrutiny and public accountability.

On the surface, this is just another SNAFU - another uncontrolled leak that has gazumped the Prime Minister's agenda, right when he wants to talk about tax cuts, cheaper electricity, and affordable childcare.

But look deeper.

The real import of the Washington Post's bombshell coverage of that telephone conversation is that it vindicates Turnbull's hitherto lame protest to have acted strongly in Australia's interests

The corollary point is that Trump is the Mad King: volatile, vainglorious, and untrustworthy. Turnbull is right to handle him with kid gloves.

Suddenly, Turnbull's grim press conference demeanour on Monday is explained.

As is the Prime Minister's frustration at the widely held sense that he had not pushed back, and had not forcefully spoken up for Australian citizens, in response to Trump's seven-nation entry ban to the US.

Australian government sources confirm the Washington Post's story is substantially correct. Trump was angry, did describe the Obama deal as the worst he'd seen, and did treat the Australian leader with contempt.

.....................................

I wonder when Britain will be the subject of a tweet by Trump when he forgets that May is his friend.

At school, we teach "Think before you post" and that what you say can't be undone.

They are definitely refugees.

America only agreed to take refugees and they were already being heavily vetted. Trump can either refuse them or keep to the existing terms. He keeps going on about 'extreme vetting' without seeming to appreciate how difficult it is for refugees to be accepted by the US.

I suspect Obama accepted them because 1) he thought it was the right, humanitarian thing to do and 2) There are a limited number of stable, 'developed' democracies that the US can rely on.

However, the extent of Trump's allegiance to western style democracy is of course questionable.

amispartacus · 02/02/2017 08:22

This is what Sean Spicer said about the 1250 refugees. Not the 1000s.
I hope that the press ask him about the difference between the word 1000s and 1250

Of course it is a terrible idea that we are foisting refugees on to any other country. Separately it is terrible to be so disrespected by U S after decades of a really close relationship.

amispartacus · 02/02/2017 08:29

From the Washington Post (yes, I subscribe)

It should have been one of the most congenial calls for the new commander in chief — a conversation with the leader of Australia, one of America’s staunchest allies, at the end of a triumphant week.

Instead, President Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement and boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win, according to senior U.S. officials briefed on the Saturday exchange. Then, 25 minutes into what was expected to be an hour-long call, Trump abruptly ended it.

At one point, Trump informed Turnbull that he had spoken with four other world leaders that day — including Russian President Vladimir Putin — and that “this was the worst call by far.”

Washington Post

A White House spokesman declined to comment. A senior administration official acknowledged that the conversation with Turnbull had been hostile and charged, but emphasized that most of Trump’s calls with foreign leaders — including the heads of Japan, Germany, France and Russia — have been productive and pleasant.

Trump also vented anger and touted his political accomplishments in a tense conversation with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, officials said. The two have sparred for months over Trump’s vow to force Mexico to pay for construction of a border wall between the two countries, a conflict that prompted Peña Nieto to cancel a planned meeting with Trump.

Even in conversations marred by hostile exchanges, Trump manages to work in references to his election accomplishments U.S. officials said that he used his calls with Turnbull and Peña Nieto to mention his election win or the size of the crowd at his inauguration

Do you think anyone calls him out on that - or says 'well, I heard that more people voted for Hillary and the crowds at Obama's were bigger'.

I think that says a lot about him - and you can see how he feels the need to remind people all the time of his lies alternative facts.

That's gaslighting. He's gaslighting foreign leaders.

If it is Alzheimers or dementia, then protecting him from public exposure isn't doing anyone any favours. At some point, he'll say something incredibly bizarre on national television and that will be the end of it.

Gird your loins for next week.

merrymouse · 02/02/2017 08:39

We must be very close to a point where foreign leaders try to reach beyond Trump and strengthen ties with the people they think will succeed him. (Assuming we aren't there already).

Some days I think he's gaslighting himself - like if he repeats it enough it'll be true

Indeed. Maybe he does believe it.

Looking forward to tonight's press conference. I find it interesting who always sits on the front row.

Will there be any more sycophantic question from Skype viewers?

"Does the President agree with me that...."

Yemen - that raid where the US Seal was killed.

Seems that a lot of civiilians were killed as well including an 8 yr old AMERICAN girl

It's Al Jazeera but that's probably as reliable and believable as Spicer and Trump at the moment.

Because people don't trust him or believe him.
