Ed Milliband on Twitter

House unanimously passes emergency motion finding Trump Muslim ban discriminatory, divisive and counterproductive and calling for repeal.

Where does that leave May?

nicenewdusters · 30/01/2017 21:14

I think there's a demo outside the US Embassy this Saturday.

I'm told reliably there is a draft Executive order on LGBT issues including adoption. Details and timing unclear.

Destinysdaughter · 30/01/2017 21:16

Had a little break from Trump, will catch up later!

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 21:17

Finally there is one planned for Saturday. I know a few of us on here are going. m.facebook.com/events/1761835547477556

lingle · 30/01/2017 21:18

I think Abby was brave to post and I was disappointed by the responses.
We need a space where those who voted for Trump can be listened to or how can we expect them to listen?

Have we learned nothing? Do we want eight years of this?

House unanimously passes emergency motion finding Trump Muslim ban discriminatory, divisive and counterproductive and calling for repeal.

Well that's a relief, there is some hope for our country at least even if May and Boris are spineless apologists.

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 21:20

What response would you give her lingle?

Clnz4fun · 30/01/2017 21:21

In bid to reverse Trump ban, Iraqi parliament votes to outlaw Americans bit.ly/2k9Nq12

lingle · 30/01/2017 21:26

Well, I"d ask her questions.
I'd listen to the answers.
I wouldn't call her names.

The best success I ever had campaigning went like this:

Lady:actually, I don't think climate change is real"
Me: really?
Lady: yes!
Me: so you never worry about it?
Lady: no!
Me: That must be great! I worry about it so much.
Lady:yes!
Me:good for you
Lady:why do you get so stressed about it?
Me:well...."

Most of the time I was far less effective :)

SanFranBear · 30/01/2017 21:31

If the LGBT EO covers even half of the things you've mentioned in your post, Onion, I may have a small cry. It is taking America back decades of progress and into a truly dark place.

Of all the pretty horrific things that have been enacted over the last ten days, at least you can say he's fulfilling his campaign promises. He said the following after the Orlando attack last year, in his acceptance speech for the nomination:

As president, I will do everything in my power to protect LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology

Wha

lingle

Questions asked. Didn't call her names. AIBU is designed for robust debate & the tone of the thread is clear.

Moreover, if you've had the pleasure of engaging with Trump supporters on social media, you may have noticed a certain pattern of utter unwillingness to listen to anything outside their echo chamber. Or to believe the evidence of their own eyes: inauguration photos, & presence at protests for example.

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 21:33

Well, in future I will leave it to you lingle

Arborea · 30/01/2017 21:33

I agree lingle: it's not on to tell people to go set up their own thread for people who disagree with the majority on this one. Let's not turn this space into a bubble and have the courage of our convictions.

SanFranBear · 30/01/2017 21:35

Oops - just wanted to end with:

What about protecting them from hate and violence from their own country and people?

I am honestly so upset but am hopeful this is either a false rumour or is not as sweeping as posted up thread (obviously with the hope that absolutely nothing is changed but I can't imagine there is no smoke without fire) SadAngry

BigBadgers · 30/01/2017 21:39

Thanks zebra you put it much more succinctly than I managed. I had to delete three posts before I just gave up in despair.

I have tried reason, I have tried understanding, I have listened and cared. The recent events have made me think that maybe we have spent too much time trying to look for reason in something that is pure, self interested bigotry. Nobody insulted her, we just pointed out where she was incorrect in her logic and asked questions. We need to stop pandering to self absorbed snowflakes who think they are the most important thing in the world and that everyone else should suffer so they can stay at the top of the pile. I have had enough of it.

Can I suggest "Deer Hunting With Jesus" , by the late Joe Bageant as an interesting read, which gives some insight into the mindset of certain groups of society in the USA?
