I like the Prince Charles idea.

GingerIvy · 31/01/2017 10:11

I would be very cautious throwing about the "AZ citizens want strong borders" comments. First the borders are stronger than you think. And I'm pretty familiar with both AZ and the border crossing situation. I know quite a few people there that are well aware the border does not need a new wall built.

lingle · 31/01/2017 10:13

I'm just saying please can we not make our own special little echo chamber here?

Think about an organisation you admire. Any one. Pick one. It keeps communicating. It condemns the racism and the politicians but it keeps reaching out to the individuals and trying to work out why they are thinking as they do.

The alternative is....what?

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 10:17

name there is a march on Saturday starting at the us Embassy. I will be there with dh and dd.

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 10:18

BigBadgers

I doubt we could keep HRH to three hours. And I don't think we should try to curb his enthusiasm, bless him.

fleuricle · 31/01/2017 10:19

anti State visit petition now at 1.6million, and growing fast...

I don't want this dangerous loon wined and dined at our expense (in every sense) Sad

QuizteamBleakley · 31/01/2017 10:19

Placemarking while I catch up on the Twittersphere too. Hopefully President Clownstick is asleep now and I can catch up, before he unveils his next fucknugget EO.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2017 10:20

The Saturday march starts at 11am :)

Formerpigwrestler9 · 31/01/2017 10:20

Is he evil but not sophisticated enough to pull it off
Or he he evil and clever pretending to be stupid
Or stupid puppet of clever evil people
Or...or what?
I'm confused really

lingle · 31/01/2017 10:23

I'm feeling upset about it all.

I am trying to think of people who I want to listen to

  1. Obama
2 The Pope (yes I know it's a shitty anti-abortion church but right now I'll take it and argue that one with them later) 3 actually Prince Charles, yes he's clueless about a lot of things but he has integrity
  1. Trudeau
  2. Merkel.

Anyone else?

What I don't want to do is scream loudly and contemptuously about anyone who voted for/supports Trump because that, I believe, is what will put the nail in the coffin of civilisation.

I am trying to persude DH's mum and stepdad to progress an application for German citizenship to which they are entitled so they can vote.

BigBadgers · 31/01/2017 10:24

lingle I appreciate the olive branch, but I don't think it is necessary. I am very much a believer that everyone has a right to come and give their views. Nobody was rude, or unreasonable in their response. They did ask questions and give facts. Some of those may be difficult to hear for someone who is a fervent trump supporters, but that does not mean they should not be said. We are not putting up walls, we are not taking away people's rights to be heard, or checking up on their posting history before letting them in. If anything posters have engaged with and discussed with her the issues she has raised openly and with admirable patience considering their is 6 threads of information she could read if she wanted.

We can not avoid asking the hard questions and challenging people because we are afraid of hurting their feelings, that is how we have ended up in this mess.

lingle · 31/01/2017 10:24

sorry, quick add , no one on this thread is "screaming loudly and contemptuously".

please believe this is not about bickering on a fucking thread. It's too serious.

meltownmary · 31/01/2017 10:24

Whilst I'm worried about the loose cannon that is Trump for sure, for balance anyway, Sally Yates was AG under Obama and was acting only. She said something Trump didn't like, and he relieved her of her position. She wasn't going to last long as acting AG anyway IMV.

ZebraOwl · 31/01/2017 10:24

Formerpigwrestler9

I try to believe few humans are truly evil... the things he says suggests he doesn't really understand [the implications of] what he's doing; but whether he's being puppeted or is just whirling about like a tantrumming toddler at large (in both senses)... ech.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 10:25

Secretly I want Trump to come here, face the massive protests, get snubbed by the Queen and get a lecture from Charles.

Maybe that could be the wording of a petition Grin

"Sally Yates was AG under Obama and was acting only. She said something Trump didn't like, and he relieved her of her position. She wasn't going to last long as acting AG anyway IMV."

Is he legally entitled to sack her?

namechangingagainagain · 31/01/2017 10:26

thank you badgers!!
off to twitter to catch up with the craziness
LOVE the idea of putting him in with Charles! Not sure what the world is coming to when Ed Miliband and Prince Charles seem the sane choice for our leaders

CaveMum · 31/01/2017 10:26

Apologies if this has already been said, but I heard s very valid point on the radio yesterday:

This could all be a ploy on Trumps (or his advisors) behalf:

  1. Instigate a controversial (but popular with hard core supporters) order that they know will be struck down.
  1. Watch the Supreme Court strike down the bill.
  1. Claim the Supreme Court doesn't have "the people's" interest at its heart and is part of the Elite.
  1. Start stripping the SC of powers, paving the way for even more draconian bills to be passed.

A frightening thought.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 10:26

She said something Trump didn't like, and he relieved her of her position

Attorney General relieved of position....that sounds like a military commander in a war relieving someone of their position for not following orders they feel are illegal.

OP posts:
brasty · 31/01/2017 10:27

Yes Trump can legally sack Sally Yates.

brasty · 31/01/2017 10:28

I think a state visit where Trump spends lots of time with Charles, would be amusing. It won't happen though. Everyone knows Charles is a loose cannon.

amispartacus · 31/01/2017 10:28

Start stripping the SC of powers, paving the way for even more draconian bills to be passed

This scene is not funny anymore

The point is that the AG's job is to uphold the Constitution. Not to do what the President says. Clearly, the two should not come into conflict, but in this case they did. She should not be removed from post for refusing to obey Trump. The point of having Executive, Legislature & Judiciary is that it provides a system of checks & balances. Trump is trying to remove that.

Destinysdaughter · 31/01/2017 10:31

Those checks and balances sure aren't working here!

brasty · 31/01/2017 10:32

Trump was wrong to remove Sally Yates. But my understanding is that legally he can.
