To think this is a load of bs?

My mum posted on fb today that she's excited to see trump in power as he's a Christian and America finally has a Christian leader. Personally I don't see anything Christian about trying to segregate America. Aibu to think that's utter nonsense and he's definitely not getting his instructions from God?! I'm not a Christian though so maybe I just don't see it?

How charming you are, Cara

CoolCarrie · 30/01/2017 11:45

Mil is just like your mum, bigoted, homophobic, small minded, god bothering pita. She likes trumpet because of his anti choice stance, that is all, nothing else. My dh & I have tried to point out the bs that trumpet & she herself comes out with, but frankly I have got to the stage that it is pearls before swine in her case. I pointed out to her just last night that Jesus makes no mention at all about gay people, he was more concerned with love, justice and caring than anything else.

CaraAspen · 30/01/2017 11:45

It's just a step down from "hun"and "hubby".

TheNiffler · 30/01/2017 11:46

So mature.

CaraAspen · 30/01/2017 11:46

But I have no wish to derail the thread so i am going NC - temporarily.

CaraAspen · 30/01/2017 11:46

Capital I

DesolateWaist · 30/01/2017 11:48

NC is just short hand for non contact. It's no different to saying BBC, TV, GCSE...........

Off you go then Cara, don't let the door bang your arse on the way out.

Werkzallhourz · 30/01/2017 11:53

I see Christophobia has reared its ugly head here.

"Some of the most unpleasant people I've met have been practicing Christians".

Would you ever write this about adherents of another religion? Change the word Christian to Sikh or Muslim, and read it to yourself again.

"Just like 95% of all Christians tbf".

Again would you write this ridiculous statement about people that practice another religion? I'm sure the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian, Iraqi, Syrian, and Egyptian Christians would love to know you think they are homophobic bigots, just when many of them are being persecuted for their beliefs.

The casual sectarianism and bigotry towards Christians on this thread is appalling. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

InfiniteCurve · 30/01/2017 11:54

Nice picture ,PigletJohn Grin
RedSauce, maybe you've been unlucky but most of my friends and relations are Christians - none of them are bigoted homophobic racists. My most trending towards racist friend is the least religious of the bunch but I'm not making sweeping generalisations based on her !

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 30/01/2017 11:57

The OP's mother has a right to hold that opinion

It's not an opinion. She stated what she thought was a fact and is not one. She does not have a right to an alternative fact.

I see Christophobia has reared its ugly head here

Can you point out where anyone seems to be afraid of Christ?

WorraLiberty · 30/01/2017 11:58

Actually, having been raised a catholic and having gone to catholic schools etc, I can wholeheartedly agree with the PP who said

"Some of the most unpleasant people I've met have been practicing Christians".

And had I been raised as a Sikh or Muslim and my experience was the same then yes, of course I would say so.

I'm not sure why you think anyone shouldn't, Werkz if that's their personal experience.

DesolateWaist · 30/01/2017 11:58

She does not have a right to an alternative fact.

In fairness Trump bloody loves an alternative fact.

RedSauce · 30/01/2017 12:00

Yep, for sure. A lot of Muslims are huge hypocrites too. Do you feel better knowing that I'm so inclusive?

CoolCarrie · 30/01/2017 12:01

By the way I think pence worst than trumpet , he is one of those end of days types, who positively long for the end of the world as he thinks Jesus will return then. I think & hope that 80% of Christian believers are good, kind people, it is just that the ones who make the most noise are the misguided, ignorant ones, like your mum, OP , and my mil.

RestlessTraveller · 30/01/2017 12:01

Alternative facts

RestlessTraveller · 30/01/2017 12:06

Warning. You'll be singing it aaaaalllllll day!

CoolCarrie · 30/01/2017 12:08

No Christophobia here! But a inquiring mind, who has no problem with the new testament, but feels the old testament is a fable, used as a way for primitive people to make sense of their world thousands of years ago, full of blood, guts, incest, a jealous god, war, genocide and men who think they know best!

seafoodeatit · 30/01/2017 12:10

I'd be excited by an atheist, or maybe a leader who's religion was deemed irrelevant. State and religion should be two separate things, what religion a head of state is should have no effect on how the country is run and therefore should be of no interest to people.

No point in saying which religion you'd pick on, if their religious texts are looked at they all have plenty of bigotry, racism, sexism and homophobia thrown in, we all like to to focus the more liberal minded religious folks because they've taken a different angle on their beliefs but it doesn't change that the fundamental views of the major faiths.

User006point5 · 30/01/2017 12:12

I totally agree with this. Some Christians may be hateful, but it's not because they are Christians, because Christ preached love and tolerance. I am not a Christian, but these nasty assertions are pretty similar to the anti-Muslim messages that I've seen people post on Facebook. I hate to see this deriding of others. Surely everyone should pull together against Trump's bigotry, not throw in more of our own.

InfiniteCurve · 30/01/2017 12:20

Actually if you look at the Bible there isn't a lot of homophobia. Racism, yes - but as it is mostly about the Jews being God's own people it doesn't carry over well to today where the overwhelming majority of Christians are not from a Jewish background, and so would be on the 'wrong' side....

Anniegetyourgun · 30/01/2017 12:26

Nobody (unless cross-posted with this one) has so far said anything horrible about Christ or the reported teachings in the Bible, though. What they are calling out is not religion but rank hypocrisy. In this case we are talking mainly about hypocritical Christians because that is what the thread is specifically about. Whether there is or is not more in other religions is not really the issue (clue: they're all human beings so I imagine the proportion is similar, and I wouldn't except atheists either).

Btw the "eye of a needle" quote iirc is from when a rich man asked Jesus how he could be saved. The answer was "go, sell all thou hast and give to the poor". The man didn't like that answer, so he went away sad and unsaved and Jesus made that comment. An RE teacher when I was at school (about 100 years ago) suggested Jesus didn't mean an actual needle, but was referring to a small gate set next to the main trade gates into Jerusalem which was known as The Needle's Eye. If you were late getting to town of an evening so the gates were already shut you might be let in through the side gate, but would never get your camel through unless it was completely unloaded. I don't know if she was right but it does make sense.

TheNiffler · 30/01/2017 12:26

I also went to a Catholic school, and used to go to church (with DMIL to keep her company). I can't disagree with Worra and the PP, I've never met such a hypocritical, narrow minded bunch - and again, if I'd had experience of an alternative religion, and found the same, I'd still say that.

Maybe we've all been unlucky. However looking at what's currently happening in the US, I'm not so sure.

TheNiffler · 30/01/2017 12:30

Pence is terrifying. Trump's mad, and his brain is in flight, but Pence is possibly sane and actually believes what he's saying AND preaching. Not much is scarier than a rigid fundamentalist in power.

PigletJohn · 30/01/2017 12:30

the "eye of the needle doesn't mean what it says" is just made up. There is nothing in the Bible or in historical record to support it.

It's just a story made up to comfort the rich who find "sell all you have, give to the poor, and follow me" too painful.

Luke, Matthew and Mark are quite clear on this.

CockacidalManiac · 30/01/2017 12:33

Christophobia

Wasn't that a musical by The Who?

Vice-Prez Pence is a born-again, 'praise the Lord and pass the ammunition' type grade one lunatic.
