AIBU to think that if people cannot be trusted to use their lights in the fog, we should have cars with automatic lights?!

All this bad weather lately has really shown how many people don't use their lights. It's so dangerous. Not just for them, but others.
I've just followed someone, in the FOG, who pulled out on to a 50mph road, turning RIGHT, with NO lights on. Recipe for disaster, me think!

We do don't we? Mine is set to auto so they come on in a certain level of low light.

I agree about the danger though. It's usually a silver car too

There's the stealth drivers with no lights at all and then the ones who have their full fog lights on, driving on a busy road, when it's just a bit misty, blinding everyone else with them.

DH's car has automatic headlights, but the fog lights are manual.

I flash 'em.

It's just ludicrous isn't it?
People only using side lights and not using fog-lights properly winds me up too.

(Mind you, I drive a Volvo so don't need to turn them on, and I've got into a courtesy car in the past and sat on my drive for a few seconds wondering why I can't see )

Auto lights don't come on in fog apparently.
Drivers who drive without lights in fog should be forced to stand in the road dressed in grey clothes until they shit their pants and realise that nobody can fucking see them the pricks

We should have the daytime running lights rule like they have (or had?) in Scandinavia. Don't need to think about it then, even if it's not that much of a hardship and something a considerate person might do anyway. I guess if you're in a bit of a rush you might forget, but if almost all cars coming the other way are lit up it's a bit of a giveaway!

Maybe it's the auto lights that's the problem. I've driven in the dark before when I didn't realize H had turned off the auto lights.

Mine have auto lights (not fog) but they do not always come on when they are supposed to particularly in misty weather so I'm not sure auto fog lights would be reliable.
I think there are more people without lights on because they think auto lights will always come on when necessary.

More of a problem here with people insisting on using them in light mist or heavy rain.

I drive most places with my lights on....for a start it's nearly always dark up here in frozen north, and secondly as a middle aged woman in a fiat 500 I am apparently fucking invisible

it does have running lights. but still tend to use headlamps as well.

You can't make everything foolproof.

I was taught to turn my lights on if in doubt, but my brother (who was taught by the exact same instructor ) believes they are there to help him see. So if it is dim or foggy, he will express surprise that you suggest he turns them on, because he can see fine.

Thankfully he has mostly given up driving now. Idiot.

Fog lights are rarely necessary, but some lights are!

and yes...fog lamps are grossly overused, and people should have them inserted somewhere for using them inappropriately, or not using them

Makes me laugh when it's a frosty day and you see someone tootling along with the rear screen all frosted up and their foglights on cos they are stupid and cannot work out the difference between the "demist rear screen" or "fog light" logo on the car buttons.

I hate people using them in the rain too.

Maybe auto lights are the problem for some. My car doesn't have auto lights so always remember. My husband's car has them though and I actually have no idea how to turn the lights on in the fog (I have only driven his car once)

I also think automatic lights are a bit of a problem. I haven't been driving very long so have limited experience to go on but the amount of cars that have automatic lights that forget to turn their full lights on in the dark is ridiculous. I seem to be behind cars very frequently that don't realise they don't have their lights on because their front ones are.
