Owen Jones on why he organised today's demonstration:

Throughout history we've all looked back at
huge injustice. And we look back and ask 'what did people do? Did they speak out? Or did they remain silent?'.

"We damn people often for their complicity for not speaking out at moments of great injustice. This is one of those moments. This is a historic moment, historic in the worst possible sense of that word, and I think now, people from a whole range of political persuasions, whether you be on the left or the right, need to speak out on the basis of human decency, against injustice.

"Against an administration where I am afraid this is going to be a slippery slope. This is only the beginning."

Clutching at straws, but at least BJ is a historian...

amispartacus · 30/01/2017 16:28

Boris. This is serious. Please take it seriously.

I don't understand it either. I had always thought of government in the U.S.A as being all about checks and balances.

amispartacus · 30/01/2017 16:30

It's ok as long as it doesn't affect us and we can get our people in.

Some difficult questions for Boris

Sorry that was a reply to Roussette from about a zillion pages ago. This thread is so fast!

Roussette · 30/01/2017 16:31

I've read that in more than one place. No idea if it is fake news!

"On Inauguration Day, Trump apparently filed his candidacy for 2020. Beyond being unusual, this opens up the ability for him to start accepting “campaign contributions” right away. Given that a sizable fraction of the campaign funds from the previous cycle were paid directly to the Trump organization in exchange for building leases, etc., at inflated rates, you can assume that those campaign coffers are a mechanism by which US nationals can easily give cash bribes directly to Trump. Non-US nationals can, of course, continue to use Trump’s hotels and other businesses as a way to funnel money to him"

Back to my earlier question - is there anyone on here who is Jewish that can answer it please???

Why the issues about Ivanka and her husband being Jewish but them going out to eat and wearing sleeveless/strapless dresses??

Roussette · 30/01/2017 16:32

Yes Flo I agree. It is like a coup.

I thought... because POTUS... is the huge position it is, there was no way one rogue guy could have power like Trump is now

Does anyone know what the "beef" is between the Stop The War Coalition ad Owen Jones? On his Twitter feed yesterday OJ said he'd be organising demos for today and dismissed STW's plans for a big march on Saturday - basically said they were pathetic.

Funny how May won't countenance the million plus asking for the state visit to be cancelled because she says the visit is in the nation's interests, but pushes ahead with Brexit even tho' she was a Remainer and therefore must think remain is in the nation's interests.

Kochs wonder out loud about how we ended up with Trump as if they had nothing to do with putting us on that path

Showmethewaytogohome · 30/01/2017 16:43

I always took the crypto facist bastards seriously. And yes I will call out people who voted for trump and farages view of brexit as stupid too. Stupid or very very bloody niave. Democracy is only strong if it is respected. Populus uprisings have left us staring into the brink of totalitarianism and they have been planning this for a long time. We have been sleepwalking.
Off to a demo later. Can't sit on my hands and watch this. It my kids future at stake. I urge everyone who can does the same
