To go to A&E

I'm really in two minds about this. I know A&E is crazy at the moment, but I am really quite worried about 3 year old DS.

He's been complaining of leg pain for the last few weeks, I decided to 'wait and see' thinking it was just growing pains. Over the last week the leg pain has got worse, he's been holding his leg and crying, calpol/ibuprofen not having much effect (although the pain comes and goes). He's also lost weight, is generally fatigued, has a poor appetite and for the last 3 days, a fever.

I suspect the fever is just viral but I'm quite worried about the leg and the general malaise. His childminder (goes 3 days a week) and nursery (goes 1 day a week) have both commented that he doesn't seem to be himself.

We saw Out of Hours Nurse yesterday who had a look at him and declared that she 'couldn't really do anything' and to see the GP on Monday. So no point going back there.

What he needs (I think) is a blood test. AIBU to go to A&E with him today - he's never been to A&E before (we're not overly anxious parents but we are really worried about this)

I would really like to know that this little boy is all right.

Writerwannabe83 · 30/01/2017 10:00

My guess is that he's been admitted and we'll just have to wait for an update. I hope you're all ok OP Flowers

TreacleTreacleLittleStar · 30/01/2017 11:14

Any update??

HiggeldyPiggeldy · 30/01/2017 12:21

its always so difficult to gauge with kids, they can be so unwell but then recover very quickly remembers my children making waiting room recoveries but they can also decline very quickly. If you are worried always go and be seen, better to be a bit embarrassed about maybe having wasted someones time than the alternatice

I hope your ds is ok and hopefully has been seen now

MistyMinge · 30/01/2017 13:20

Any news OP? Hope you went to A & E and your son is feeling a little better or at least your mind is a little more at rest. Please update OP.

haveacupoftea · 30/01/2017 20:07

Hope the poor wee pup is ok

Plumpysoft · 30/01/2017 20:11

I have been thinking of you too x

Northernlurker · 30/01/2017 20:15

Just read whole thread. Hope the op got done good news but lack of update is worrying.

I'm getting sick of the don't go to a and e brigade TBH. Just seen a poster with coffee ground vomit advised it can wait. Hmm

Children are not supposed to lose weight. It's not a good sign. Children should always be able to weight bear. Not doing so is worrying. Symptoms which can be something or nothing in adults can be dark more concerning in children. Which is why every paediatric hcp on this thread has said 'go'

Howaboutthisone · 30/01/2017 20:38

I hope that all was good and that you're just busy with normal life OP.

pieceofpurplesky · 30/01/2017 20:38

Hope all is ok OP

Well said.

Unfortunately across my career I have seen lots of very sad diagnoses in young and older children which started off with bone pain and weight loss Sad

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that OP's son's symptoms are due to more innocent causes.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 30/01/2017 20:45

Hope all went well OP Thanks

alpacawhacker · 30/01/2017 20:51

I took my son to our GP with leg pain and weight loss a few weeks ago. He had become clearly very unwell and if it hadn't been for the fact that it was a weekday morning and I managed to get an appointment fairly easily then I think I would have taken him to A+E. And it would have been just as well if I had because he had DKA, which is life threatening, and this is how we discovered he is a type 1 diabetic.

lougle · 30/01/2017 20:58

I'm hoping that the OP's absence from this thread is a sign that her DS is getting the treatment he needs.

EweAreHere · 30/01/2017 21:03

I hope your son is ok, OP.

alpacawhacker · 30/01/2017 21:07

What I forgot to say, in my open mouthed disbelief at some of the posts on this thread, is, if you are a normally sensible person I think you need to trust your instincts on whether something is very wrong with your child or not and act accordingly.

I hope the OP's ds is ok.
