To go to A&E

I'm really in two minds about this. I know A&E is crazy at the moment, but I am really quite worried about 3 year old DS.

He's been complaining of leg pain for the last few weeks, I decided to 'wait and see' thinking it was just growing pains. Over the last week the leg pain has got worse, he's been holding his leg and crying, calpol/ibuprofen not having much effect (although the pain comes and goes). He's also lost weight, is generally fatigued, has a poor appetite and for the last 3 days, a fever.

I suspect the fever is just viral but I'm quite worried about the leg and the general malaise. His childminder (goes 3 days a week) and nursery (goes 1 day a week) have both commented that he doesn't seem to be himself.

We saw Out of Hours Nurse yesterday who had a look at him and declared that she 'couldn't really do anything' and to see the GP on Monday. So no point going back there.

What he needs (I think) is a blood test. AIBU to go to A&E with him today - he's never been to A&E before (we're not overly anxious parents but we are really worried about this)

Hope you get seen quickly and all is fine Flowers

Hope you're at a&e now and get seen quickly.
My DS is 9 and has had a similar issue since October.
Initially we put it down to a football injury but over after 3 weeks it was no better, he was limping, was getting a fever every other day and was in a lot of pain. Tried to get a gp appointment but was told it didn't class as an urgent one so was given a routine appointment for 2 weeks later.
My dad is a gp and he said to go to a&e as he suspected irritable hip so my DS would need X-rays- got the X-rays and blood tests, not irritable hip but cysts in the bone in his lower leg.
All treated and sorted now but not something the gp could have diagnosed

I posted earlier, before the swathe of medics came on and I'm glad they did. Hopefully you are at hospital now. Good luck.

Musicaltheatremum · 29/01/2017 12:56

Another medic here with tingly alarm bells going off.
Hope you get him sorted out.

How you getting on op? Hope you've been seen and back at home now xx

AwaywiththePixies27 · 29/01/2017 17:28

Any news OP?

TreacleTreacleLittleStar · 29/01/2017 17:47

Yes I definitely would. A&E DO do Blood Tests, despite what an above commenter has stated. Sometimes A&E is the fastest way to get to the bottom of serious issues. They may well keep him in if they suspect anything sinister.

This may sound unusual as I don't know you, but please can you keep me updated? I'll be thinking of you all x

CheckpointCharlie2 · 29/01/2017 17:48

Hope he's ok OP.

NCforQuestion · 29/01/2017 17:51

Hope your ds is ok.

JCo24 · 29/01/2017 18:02

Did you take him to A&E OP?! I hope he's alright!

minmooch · 29/01/2017 18:04

How is your DS now?

Prometheus · 29/01/2017 18:35

The leg pain alone wouldn't worry me. When DS was 4 he suddenly started saying his leg hurt, wouldn't walk on it - started hopping everywhere. I couldn't get GP appointment and OOH don't do children so sent me to A&E next door. Finally saw a doctor who asked him to walk......and the little bugger did. I was so embarrassed. Doctor said it's really common and actually gave me a leaflet called 'infant leg pain' or something like that which says it's just an unexplained thing that kids sometimes get.

Prometheus · 29/01/2017 18:36

Combined with the fever though......that would make me worry a bit more. Hope he's OK.

Howaboutthisone · 29/01/2017 18:37

I hope your son is ok OP.

Icantstopeatinglol · 29/01/2017 18:48

I hope your son is ok too OP, glad you've taken him to hospital.

obviouslymarvellous · 29/01/2017 18:49

I really do get irritated with posts like this... should I go should I wait, going back and forth for hours - listen to your gut instinct and balls to what anyone else thinks! Doctors are human at the end of the day and make mistakes you know your child better than anyone else, so please do what you think is best!

DeeCrepid · 29/01/2017 18:52

I ignored my son complaining of pain, he had a low grade fever and a poor appetite for several days. It took the hospital a while to diagnose that he had Osteomyelitis, a bone infection. He eventually needed surgery to remove the infected bone.

Flibbertyjibbit · 29/01/2017 23:33

I hope your son is OK op.

Howaboutthisone · 30/01/2017 06:11
