Dogs in cafes/pubs

AutumnEve · 28/01/2017 22:52

I was in a cafe for lunch today and the people next to me had large dog which tried sniffing my food when it was served to the table. The owners apologised but then didn't make any extraordinary effort to make sure it didn't happen again.

I don't mind dogs but DH doesn't like them. Why must people bring their dogs into these places and then not be sensitive as to whether the people around them feel uncomfortable?

Personally I think there should be laws about this.

Yanbu apart from service dogs dogs shouldnt be inside places you eat.

electrasy · 29/01/2017 11:05

I personally don't much like dogs in eating places however wouldn't be fussed as long as it was under its owners table, not smelly, noisy or sniffing around my food.

It's very normal in some other European countries. You'd struggle to find a pub or cafe without a dog!

CarouselRide · 06/12/2017 13:46

To the initial poster in this thread: I know this is an old thread but I COMPLETELY agree with you. I find it disgusting that people let their dogs’ mouths near food - why would it surprise us though when they let them lick their mouths? Despite the fact dogs put their faces into vomit, animal poo and god knows what else? Dog owners are generally incredibly selfish...not to mention unhygienic.

Dahlietta · 06/12/2017 14:22

CarouselRide, I think you should start your own thread. Mumsnet could definitely do with one about how Dog owners are generally incredibly selfish...not to mention unhygienic. FYI, though, I don't let my dog lick my mouth, nor does my dog habitually find vomit into which he can stick his face... Grin

AngelsSins · 06/12/2017 15:08

For god sake, why are you demanding that everything must fit around you? There are far more cafes around that don't allow dogs, than there are ones that do, go to one of them. There are lots of different people in this world, as well as different animals, not everything should be catered towards a perticular view point.

Katedotness1963 · 06/12/2017 15:17

We had one dog whose walks ended up in the pub so much that one day it dragged us into the pubs barrel store...must have the smell of beer? I don't mind dogs in pubs, less keen in eating establishments.

Zoesweet · 06/12/2017 15:27

I love dogs but I think in places like restaurants dog owners should be more sensitive of their dogs behaviour towrads other customers. It's not the dog's fault but the owners if at all their dogs behavior offend other people.

ZOMBIE THREAD

FloControl · 06/12/2017 15:42

One pub I frequent has been dog-friendly for as long as I can remember, through various changes of licensee. The present incumbent absolutely insists on well-behaved dogs only and most of them are. Sometimes it seems as though there are more dogs than people in there. I was once served by an Alsatian.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 06/12/2017 15:43

I would think it’s sensible to find somewhere which doesn’t allow dogs. Bad owners who have no control over their dogs are awe full (in fact there’s been a few dog in dog attacks in our local park caused by shit owners with status dogs) but it doesn’t seem the case here. To go into a dog friendly place and not expect a few sniffs your way is heading for disappointment I’m afraid.

Debby08 · 06/12/2017 15:45

There are food places where pets are or are not allowed. I think people who can't leave their pets behind should just opt to go to places where pets are welcome.

Biscuit

That's for you. Not the dog!

MyKidAreTakingMySanity · 06/12/2017 23:28

And try not to give your DC fear of dogs, it's definitely a learnt-from-parents thing.

Sorry I have to disagree. I was raised with loads of pet dogs and my family bred the most beautiful Danes. I love dogs. DH is a dog man too. My last Great Dane died when DD1 was a baby and we never got a new one. I've never been afraid of dogs and am happy to pet them giving big snuggle-wiggles to the doggy-wiggles when I see them. My kids however? Total different story. They are nervous around dogs. I have no idea why. They just don't really like them and will hold back, turning away nervously. All three kids! No bad experiences or anything. I would think they were swapped at birth! Both DSIL has a dog and my mum has three!

MyKidAreTakingMySanity · 06/12/2017 23:30

Oh and YANBU if the dog was ill mannered. I don't want dogs sniffing my food. I would probably avoid pet friendly eateries in future if I were you. Plus many dog owners are nose-blind and have no idea they'd pooch actually stinks.

Agustarella · 06/12/2017 23:30

YANBU. Dogs are stinky and gross. Places that let them in should prominently display some kind of health warning. Ugh.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/12/2017 23:50

"Personally I think there should be laws about this. AIBU?"

I don't understand your problem. It would seem that there are many more cafes, pubs and restaurants that don't allow dogs, than there are that do.

Why not chose to go to one of those, rather than go to an establishment that does allow dogs and then complain or feel disgruntled by that? (Genuine question, I really do wonder).

On that basis, yes, you are being very unreasonable.

ADishBestEatenCold · 06/12/2017 23:57

Have just seen your post in which you explain that you have been in previously and have never seen dogs there in the past, OP, which answers my question.

Understandable, although I think in all cases it's sensible for customers to ask about any issues of importance (to them) before parting with their money.

RavenLG · 07/12/2017 00:00

why would it surprise us though when they let them lick their mouths? Despite the fact dogs put their faces into vomit, animal poo and god knows what else?

I bet you've had vomit in your mouth at some point Carousel .. or genitals of some form. And still kiss your partner / children / loved ones.

I'd rather be selfish that so for up my own arse I can't see daylight.

ADishBestEatenCold · 07/12/2017 00:01

"ZOMBIE THREAD"

Oh bugger! Missed that, ChardonnaysPrettySister! Grin

RavenLG · 07/12/2017 00:01

Agustarella ah of course there are no eating establishments with poor hygiene ratings that ban dogs are there... wait...

Agustarella · 07/12/2017 00:04

@ Raven, sure, dog free is no guarantee of great hygiene. But having dogs in your face while eating is something that would really annoy me, hence the idea of a big sign on the door so everyone is forewarned and embarrassing situations are averted.

TrinitySquirrel · 07/12/2017 00:06

Plenty of non dog friendly cafes. Use one of those OP and do shut up Cake

PersianCatLady · 07/12/2017 00:08

Some cafes allow dogs.

If you don't want to go to a cafe where there are dogs make sure you choose one where dogs are not allowed.

Seahawk80 · 07/12/2017 00:17

I think yanbu if the dog was badly behaved. I used to class myself as a dog lover until PIL got a puppy. He's 2 now and really badly trained, leaps all over me, drools on me, smells disgusting! They insist on taking him everywhere - they then have a miserable time and so does everyone around them! We had a lovely dog growing up and I love seeing well behaved dogs when I'm at the pub. Perhaps I just need a few trips to the pub to find some lovely dogs to restore my faith! I think it's unfair to tar all dogs / dog owners with the same brush. Same as children, some are great and some will ruin your lunch if you sit near them!

Bluesrunthegame · 07/12/2017 00:20

A cafe I used to go to is now dog friendly, it suddenly announced a change to attract new customers. Last time I went, I sat and watched a dog sniff a load of biscuits for sale while the manager and the dog owner also watched, smiling. I haven't been back since, just hope the cafe I now go to doesn't also decide to welcome dogs.

I don't especially mind dogs, but don't think they should be allowed in places that prepare and serve food. Apart from service dogs.
