To think I'm overweight (refused access to an NHS funded diet program + pic included)

I used to be a svelte size 10. Put on weight after having my Son. My main issue is my stomach. It sticks out. I think this is because I have a small waist so the fat has a smaller area to cover (if that makes sense). In the morning it can look pretty flat but by the evening after I've eaten a meal it does stick out in tight clothes.

Anyway, I don't know what I weigh. But I have always considered myself considerably overweight. At least two stone overweight. I am 5ft7 and should be no more than 11 stone and around 10stone to me a very healthy weight. I suspect I'm about 13 stone. People do often tell me I am fine the way I am but my parents tell me I need to lose two stone.

Anyway, signed up for an NHS funded diet programme. I arrive and they tell me my BMI is not high enough to qualify. You have to be at least two stone overweight. But I am sure I am I said. They didn't even weigh me and said I was too slim to join.

I've just signed up to slimming world but I'm really annoyed. I know I should be flattered but I really wanted to go on the course and do genuinely think I'm overweight by around two stone and should have been allowed participate. I have struggled to lose the baby weight but I know I have to make an effort. AIBU?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics. I'm not in my own home and took them just now. They're not designed to be in any way flattering. I want genuine opinions and I'm ready for them!

I must be odd. I find this thread very odd.
Is it me?
Hmm

Sugarlightly · 27/01/2017 18:46

Can you not just lay to go to weight watchers or slimming world? Do they do that?

Sugarlightly · 27/01/2017 18:46

Pay*

GlitterGlue · 27/01/2017 18:46

You don't even have to buy scales, just stand on them in the shop.

I don't believe you're 13 stone. Maybe 11.5 ish. Weigh yourself then see if you qualify.

Dahlietta · 27/01/2017 18:46

I very rarely use the NHS.

That's surprising considering your obesity is having such a detrimental effect on your health.

mambono5 · 27/01/2017 18:46

The fashion is different today, but THIS is what a slim body looks like: She is not exactly muscly, but she is slim. Nothing wrong with being slimmer by all means, but let's be realistic.

languagelearner · 27/01/2017 18:46

My guess is you have a BMI of about 27 or thereabouts. 25 is the upper limit (although you might wish you were on the lower end of the scale, around 20). A mechanic bathroom scale is probably quite cheap, and is "good enough". Don't think you'll be able to join any program with the NHS, but rather have to grapple with the problem yourself like most of us. You could be right about being up to two stone overweight, but probably it's more like just one stone. Unfortunately that one stone seems to partially have landed on your stomach, that too like for many of us. Have you tried doing sit-ups etc. at the gym?

nebulae · 27/01/2017 18:46

I just eat fattening foods like nuts and meat.

Instead of farting about on here, go learn something about nutrition. That would be a good starting point for you.

OneWithTheForce · 27/01/2017 18:46

Take another photo with you back straight and shoulders back and relaxed.

nancy75 · 27/01/2017 18:46

So why can't you get that from slimming world? This reads to me like you just want to go to this group because it's free, if other people get free stuff you want it too

NewPapaGuinea · 27/01/2017 18:46

Do yourself a massive favour and avoid SW like the plague. It "may" work short term, but it does nothing to educate you about healthy eating as a lifestyle and encourages processed food like hi-far bars and muller light yoghurts 😩

NoelHeadbands · 27/01/2017 18:47

You don't look very overweight to me, you just look like you carry the extra fat on your arms and belly.

The good news is that they are fairly easy areas to tone up

I'm not as old as 30!!!!! 30 isn't old & certainly doesn't require 5 exclamation marks.

As cointless others on this thread have said eat less, particularly crap stuff & move more. Consistently.

HappyFlappy · 27/01/2017 18:48

I would agree with you that you are not slim and toned so therefore you are not a healthy weight.

Good point Angry.

And if the OP was fit and toned, she might actually weigh more than she does now because muscle is a lot denser than fat. I think she needs exercise and a good ,healthy diet - not necessarily low-calorie, but good, fresh food with no junk food and a high vegetable intake.

Sirzy · 27/01/2017 18:48

normally have good posture. Just slumped like that to take the picture.

To make yourself look bigger?

The only person who can change your weight/shape is you. You need to take responsibility for yourself. I say that as someone who has lost 7 stone.

The NHS only has limited resources, and yes some people need their help when they have extreme and out of control issues relating to food and eating. That certainly doesn't seem to be the case here though!

TrippyMcTrapFace · 27/01/2017 18:48

Just slumped like that to take the picture.

Why? to make your stomach stick out more?

GreedyDuck · 27/01/2017 18:49

Do some exercise (preferably something that will strengthen your core plus a bit of cardio) and cut out sugary drinks, booze, and crappy 'white'carbs like bread/pasta/rice for a few weeks, job done.

You are not massively overweight, you need to lose half a stone at the most and do some physical activity. Why you expect the NHS to fund that I have no idea.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 27/01/2017 18:49

*countless.

SingingInTheRainstorm · 27/01/2017 18:50

It seems odd to me that they went by your appearance over getting some scales and actually weighing you. How can they monitor your progress without a beginning weight?
Could you go to one of the weighing machines they have in the pharmacy, get your weight, if it is 2 stone over reappear at the course with the print off in hand? Yes you've missed I guess the first week, I doubt you've missed anything majorly important.

likeaZombie · 27/01/2017 18:50

So you deliberately made yourself look worse and bigger for the pic?? Helpful. Join slimming world, my friend has lost 3 Stone with one to go and made it look easy.
I think once you reach your target weight it's free for life?
