To wish people were more positive about my baby's name? <kind of serious>

DH & I loved the name Luca for a girl throughout my pregnancy. I know it's generally used as a boy's name especially in Italy but her middle name is Rose and I love that it means 'light'.

Anyway, my dear mum very sadly died last summer of Leukaemia and my (usually lovely) Granny (aged 96 and grieving) first said that Luca reminds her of the phrase 'dirty Luca' then a week later she asked if it was too late to change the name beaches it reminds her of Leukaemia.

I was so upset, my baby (3 weeks old) really suits her name and I love that it's a bit different but now I can't stop thinking about the link to Leukaemia :(

Sorry for your loss, go with what you feel is right. Cheerful said some wise words, Luca Rose is a beautiful name.

BertrandRussell · 27/01/2017 20:13

"Please ignore your Grandmother's comments"
Absolutely. Ignore the comments of a woman whose daughter has recently died. Hmm
This name thing is getting ridiculous.

Frazzled2207 · 27/01/2017 20:13

Well I think it's a boys name but it's still nice.
And I wouldn't worry about the leukaemia connection.

PosyBoo · 27/01/2017 20:14

when Luca was born (on my mums birthday) I though a name that meant bringer of light would be a lovely spark of life to a sad. Chapter for all of us.

This sums up beautifully exactly why you should keep the name you and DH chose for YOUR DD! Just remember this reason when you think of her gorgeous name.

teddygirlonce · 27/01/2017 20:21

Defo a boy's name and if you've known boys by that name you would never consider it for a girl.

MadreTranquillitatis · 27/01/2017 20:21

I see you point @FrancisCrawford but OP hasn't said that she is either in Italy or that she is Italian. She specifically said she knows it is a male Italian name and now she knows it's a Hungarian girls name.
I know it's more commonly used for boys in the Uk but technically it is unisex.
And Italian names are weird anyway (I can say that, my nonna is Italian Grin), I don't think anyone would find it strange if she named her DD Michele or Andrea
Also there are so many names that were traditionally boys names and now used mainly for girls, like Evelyn, Allison, Ashley, Hilary, Lindsay. etc. maybe it's time for Luca to do the same. Grin

rollonthesummer · 27/01/2017 20:24

It's a boys' name!

pregnantat50 · 27/01/2017 20:27

I love the name Luca Rose, its cute and pretty sounding. The only thing I will say knowing my mums issues with a unisex name (Hilary) and my DDs BF hating having what he calls a girls name, (Ashly) they both chose their middle names to be known as and your DD always has that opton x

P00pchute · 27/01/2017 20:28

BertrandRussell, not sure if you noticed, but the op has lost her Mother. Does the most upset person get to choose the name of the child, or is it the actual parents of the child? (who has already had the name for three weeks!) The 'ridiculousness' of a name is purely a matter of opinion.

CancellyMcChequeface · 27/01/2017 20:30

If you're pronouncing it like luke-ah, then it's a boys' name. The Hungarian girls' name is pronounced differently.

I'd never make the leukaemia connection, but I'd definitely assume that a Luca was a boy. I agree with previous posters that Lucia and Lucy are nice. Lucia Rose is lovely!

Danglybits · 27/01/2017 20:31

I'm afraid that if you post in AIBU you can expect "robust" answers. OP asked, people answered.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2017 20:31

I know a Luca , it's Italian for Luke, and yes both Luca and Luke are boys names, it's not unisex anywhere I know of. Sorry op, but t's a very masculine name. If I met a female called Luca or Luke I'd wonder why they had a boys name.

CaraAspen · 27/01/2017 20:31

It's a Tuscan town and a boy's name.

VestalVirgin · 27/01/2017 20:40

It is a boy's name, but you're not the first person to give a girl a boy's name. You can start a new trend and make it a unisex name. If your daughter doesn't like it, she can still go by Rose.

Not that dramatic, really.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2017 20:40

TinselTwins · 27/01/2017 20:46

I know a Luca (boy) and it never ever makes me think of Leukaemia xx

CaraAspen · 27/01/2017 20:48

You can say she is called after the lovely Italian town, OP. After all, Brooklyn Beckham is called after an area of NY.

BertrandRussell · 27/01/2017 20:48

It doesn't matter whether it makes you think of leukaemia or not- the link has been made by a bereaved mother and is now stuck in the head of a bereaved daughter. And it's the sort of link that can't be shifted. Sad, but true.

CaraAspen · 27/01/2017 20:49

And Harper has. number as a second name. So, Luca Rose is cool.

justilou · 27/01/2017 20:57

One of my best friends has a daughter called Luka Rose. I know she spells it with a k instead of a c to avoid the "masculine" version of the name. This girl is now 13 and has never been called "Filthy Luka" nor has she been called "Leukaemia".

Phantommagic · 27/01/2017 20:58

Yes it's a male name but it's pretty! Won't do her any harm with cv writing and job hunting in future either.

notsurehowtodothis · 27/01/2017 21:04

Wow, so many horrible posts! What's wrong with some of you?!

OP it's a beautiful name. I know of a girl called Luca, as clearly do others here, and, although it may have been masculine in origin it's certainly not mainstream masculine now and Luca Rose is a lovely name for a little girl. Don't change it - Your grandmother will accept it, she is just hurting at the moment. She will accept it eventually, but you may not be able to get past her comments if you decide to change the name and that could brew resentment. Chalk this up to her grief (understandably) and enjoy your beautiful baby girl, Luca Rose.

Congratulations on your baby, and condolences for your very sad loss also xxx

notsurehowtodothis · 27/01/2017 21:06

Also, the pronounciation of Luca is nothing like the first two syllables of leukaemia. Nor is it an issue for anybody called Luke, which DOES sound the same!

CaraAspen · 27/01/2017 21:10

The lucre word is totally different. Pfft.
