To wish people were more positive about my baby's name? <kind of serious>

DH & I loved the name Luca for a girl throughout my pregnancy. I know it's generally used as a boy's name especially in Italy but her middle name is Rose and I love that it means 'light'.

Anyway, my dear mum very sadly died last summer of Leukaemia and my (usually lovely) Granny (aged 96 and grieving) first said that Luca reminds her of the phrase 'dirty Luca' then a week later she asked if it was too late to change the name beaches it reminds her of Leukaemia.

I was so upset, my baby (3 weeks old) really suits her name and I love that it's a bit different but now I can't stop thinking about the link to Leukaemia :(

Your daughter will be able to ditch her first name if she doesn't like having a boy's name

BertrandRussell · 28/01/2017 23:22

James doesn't even feature as a girl's name over the past 10 years or so. Which means less than 3 a year.

Notsosure, by name and nature grin Some of us quoted and commented on the stats etc way up thread, do try to keep up. Shouting in caps won't help. The numbers have also gone down, and there are more spelling mistakes also registered of other 'normal' names. I would suspect most of these have been registered in ignorance.

Oh Reuset - it's a shame you choose to attempt belittling as your favoured approach to making a point. As you seem to have the supposition prowess to 'assume' other names have been listed due to 'spelling mistakes' or 'ignorance' as opposed to, well, actual choice, perhaps you should give that more of a go? 'Is it a bird? Is it a plane?! No! It's Supposition-gal!!!!' Go for it. All of us here at MN are behind you.

brownpurse · 29/01/2017 00:01

We all want to bring up children who are confident and able to be proud of their name. Many of us know that hard as we try this doesn't always happen . We have quiet, children who lack confidence, who find friendships hard and school a challenge. Thankfully most of us haven't saddled them with a name that makes their lives even harder. It is not good enough to give a child a name because YOU love it. You are not the person that will have to live with it for 90 years. Most children want to fit in. Making them different in a completely unnecessary way is selfish.

reuset · 29/01/2017 00:03

That's really, really weird thing to come out with Grin Is it supposed to be amusing? And supposition is not a good word in any case.

trulyscrumptious33 · 29/01/2017 01:16

Another thought OP; you say you like it because it means light. In Italian the word for light is 'luce' (pronounced 'loo-che) and the plural is 'luci' (pronounced 'loo-chee'). So actually the name 'Lucia' (pronounced 'Loo-chee-a') is far closer to the actual word for light. Luca has a hard 'c', so doesn't sound like the word for 'light'.

thecraftyfox · 29/01/2017 01:25

Snowone Noa is a female name, it's Israeli and the name of a woman in the Bible. It isn't a version of Noah, they have different Hebrew spellings. It's a very well established female name, a good few thousand years old.

FennecFoxMummy · 29/01/2017 01:46

We called our little boy Fennic after the fennec fox.
It's special to us and he gets Fen which we love too. Some like it, some hate it but I know it suites my little boy and he'll probably not meet another one.
My nanna refused to call him by his 1st name as she hates it but it didn't bother us because we love it.

reuset · 29/01/2017 01:51

We called our little boy Fennic after the fennec fox.

Why did you change the spelling of fennec?

FennecFoxMummy · 29/01/2017 02:00

Purely because we liked the sound of it better. The idea came from the fox but I like the way it sounds better with the I not the e.

reuset · 29/01/2017 02:08

Ah, right I see. Interesting though for sure.

PenelopeFlintstone · 29/01/2017 02:55

Luna? (Haven't got time to read 18-page thread Blush)

strawberrisc · 29/01/2017 04:46

Don't change her name. It's beautiful.

LagunaBubbles · 29/01/2017 05:17

I'm sorry for your loss and know how hard it is to grieve and celebrate all at the same time. I would never slag your name choice off but it isn't small minded and judgemental saying that Luca is a boys name, it's just factual. Saying that as long as you know that and don't mind nothing wrong with that. This might just be MN but your DD will grow up with people thinking she has a boys name. Again nothing wrong with that as long as you are aware of that and she's ok with it when older.

Heartshappedsunglasses · 29/01/2017 06:41

I just had to say- absolutely nothing wrong with the name you have chosen. I think it's great, we went for an unusual name. I like that it comes with no expectations or preconceived ideas. Our son is almost 5 months and my grandmother still can't get her head round it, comments every time but I just ignore it now and don't comment. This must be such a hard time for your family, I hope as time goes on your grandmother accepts her name. If not ignore, life is to short to disagree all the time.

Yura · 29/01/2017 07:41

Luca has been one of the most popular boy's names in europe for several years now. if you would have named you daughter Charles or Oliver, you would have expected some comments as well? Not really a surprise.

Goodness me.
If you like it stick with it.
Have no idea about all this male/ female names.

Booboo66 · 29/01/2017 07:58

Luca rise is beautiful. Though I do like the spelling Lucca just to differentiate it a little. The fact that there were only 11 girls named as Luca last year does not mean there are only 11 full stop. As people have said they know of luca's who are as old as 19 I'd expect there was a handful named that every year therefore actually quite a few. Not everyone wants a name that appears in the top 50! I have learned something from this thread though, as I always believed Suzanne vega was singing in character about a woman suffering domestic abuse. Even in the early 90's when names were much more regular I didn't think of a lady called Luka as odd. Can't believe people would be put off a name due to a meaning of a song that is at least 25 years old either. (though I called my daughter Lola so perhaps I'm not the best one to judge in that matter)
Kensal, louka for a girl in Greek is very unusual. Louka there is typically the male version (officially Loukas) and as with most Greek names the female version is only one or two letters different and would be Loukia. Its also ridiculous anyone would bring up the fact she may marry an Italian as there are many names that are typically used for different genders dependant on the country you are in, and as the name Luca for a girl is statistically showing to be growing in popularity (one poster tried to say that 11girls, the most ever, were named Luca last year as if it was a reason to prove it wasn't to be used as a girls name. To me this shows the popularity is rising) it will likely be even more common by the time op's dd is an adult.
I admit I made the leukaemia/Luca connection a little bit only as you brought it up as part of the same subject. It's not something id have ever though of otherwise and granny will grow to love the name, just as everyone grows to love a name when it's attached to someone special to them regardless how much they dislike it to start with.
Hope you are enjoying your lovely Luca Rose OP Flowers

Nataleejah · 29/01/2017 08:05

No, Lucas, Luca and Luke are regional variations of the same name (Germanic, Italian, English). The female version would be Lucy/Lucia

Not really. Think Lucrezia. There could be alternative spellinigs, like Luka/Lukah

And Lucy is female version of Lucius, not Lucas/Luke

reuset · 29/01/2017 08:57

And Lucy is female version of Lucius, not Lucas/Luke

Yes, it's definitely from Lucius.

BertrandRussell · 29/01/2017 09:03

One last time. The important bit of this story is not the name. It's the bereaved mother. I

reuset · 29/01/2017 09:08

The fact that there were only 11 girls named as Luca last year does not mean there are only 11 full stop.

Nobody would be so dim as to think a year of stats represented all the stats in existence. What a silly thing to say.

reuset · 29/01/2017 09:13

and as the name Luca for a girl is statistically showing to be growing in popularity

It's not. Shock It's falling, the numbers and pattern aren't enough to indicate any kind of rising trend either. Some years the number has been less than three per year.
