To wish people were more positive about my baby's name? <kind of serious>

DH & I loved the name Luca for a girl throughout my pregnancy. I know it's generally used as a boy's name especially in Italy but her middle name is Rose and I love that it means 'light'.

Anyway, my dear mum very sadly died last summer of Leukaemia and my (usually lovely) Granny (aged 96 and grieving) first said that Luca reminds her of the phrase 'dirty Luca' then a week later she asked if it was too late to change the name beaches it reminds her of Leukaemia.

I was so upset, my baby (3 weeks old) really suits her name and I love that it's a bit different but now I can't stop thinking about the link to Leukaemia :(

Hi, there, OP, I have some ammo for you! 😉 I think that if anyone says it's a boys' name, you could mention that in Greece it can be used for girls & there is a female politician called Louka Katseli. It is spelt "Λούκα" in Greek, so it could be transcribed as Louka/Luka/Luca. As regards the similarity of sound, "leukaemia" comes from the Greek "leukos" (pronounced "lefkos") meaning white + "aema" = blood, and is etymologically in no way linked to the name Luke/Lucy & its variants, which comes from Luke the Evangelist in the Bible, "Loukas" in Greek & unrelated to "leukos/lefkos" in leukaemia. Enjoy your little girl & I hope with time Granny comes to accept her name 🌸

CouldntMakeThisShitUp · 28/01/2017 18:50

i'd be telling granny that she won't be around much longer so may as well get used to it!

LonelyImSoLonely · 28/01/2017 18:52

I think people have been really harsh to a new mother of a 3wrek old who doesn't want to change her babies name, is dealing with the recent loss of her mother and going through the end of her pregnancy/childbirth without her, and dealing with upsetting words from her grandmother who might not be thinking straight.

As people have pointed out, they know baby girls called this, people have pointed out countries where it is a girls name.
I have never heard the term filthy lucre. And to be honest, any safe boring name you could get a kid making some tenuous link to a word/phrase/song something somewhere in history.

OP Flowers very sorry about your mum, and congratulations on the birth of your baby girl Luca, lovely name.

KensalMama · 28/01/2017 19:05

As for "Filthy lucre" -> the "lucre" has the same root as "lucrative", no relation to the name Luke. Granny could maybe call the baby Rose if she prefers? And enjoy the fact that her daughter's DNA & legacy "live on" through her granddaughter? Maybe your mum's first name could also be put as a middle name? Just some ideas, good luck & stick to your guns.

Another contender for the award mentioned above! "Hey grieving granny, I don't care what you think because you'll be dead soon and your opinion will matter even less then!"

WTF is wrong with people?

Notmuchtosay1 · 28/01/2017 19:24

I haven't gone through all replies but has anyone suggested Luca~Rose as a double barrel name?

TurquoiseDress · 28/01/2017 19:27

Congratulations on your little baby OP
Sorry to hear about your mum

Re the name Luca, I have a friend with a gorgeous little boy with that name.
To me it sounds strong, masculine and most definitely Italian.

But if you love the name, go with what you have chosen. The only worry I would have, is any confusion in future, when people might think that DD is a boy (before meeting her obvs)

Didn't a pop singer (can't remember her name ?girl off neighbours) have a daughter called Luka?

BertrandRussell · 28/01/2017 19:27

I have very rarely seen so many arseholes gathered in one place before......

CaraAspen · 28/01/2017 19:34

People choose to call girl children by surnames e.g. Mackenzie or a partial surname, Kenzie. Oh - and Harper 7 is interesting too.

SistersOfPercy · 28/01/2017 19:34

I like it personally. I have a friend (male) called Jade and a cousin (also male) called Kerry.
Never heard of the 'filthy' connection but I admit to being quite a poor Catholic Blush

CaraAspen · 28/01/2017 19:38

Actually in the UK and in other places the letter "a" at the end of a name feminises it. My name has an "a" ending.

reuset · 28/01/2017 19:42

I haven't gone through all replies but has anyone suggested Luca~Rose as a double barrel name?

Yes, they have. Also Alan-Rose and Stephen-Rose as alternative, similar boys' names. It adds a lovely feminine touch, doesn't it, the beautiful flower, and the double barrel adds class.

CasanovaFrankenstein · 28/01/2017 19:44

It doesn't matter really whether it's the same root for Luke and lucre, it's sounding similar. Not many people are struck by the root word or meaning of a name on first introduction.

CaraAspen · 28/01/2017 19:45

"Whatssheonaboutnow

I think the OP is long gone (and probably not to the name registry).

As a (part) Italian, I would assume that in calling a girl Luca, the parents were trying to "go Italian", but getting it wrong confused I'm really sorry to say that the name comes over a bit naff in this respect. Apologies OP for saying it, but I do think your daughter will come across this reaction, as well as general confusion."

The name is not "naff" fgs. What an utterly silly - and unpleasant - comment to make. There are many naff names like Chardonnay or variants thereof but by no stretch of the imagination would I include the OP's daughter's name in that category.

Is your name a delightful one? I see you as a Mavis or possibly a Moxie Crimefighter.

CasanovaFrankenstein · 28/01/2017 19:57

It's a lovely name I think you should keep the name and tell granny to shut up and put up its your child and your choice of name it has bugger all to do with granny

Jesus Christ.

reuset · 28/01/2017 19:58

I see I've rattled a cage. Oh dear, how wounding Grin Yes, it is delightful...of course.
Moxie Crimefighter? Sorry, I'm hazarding a guess we don't share the same cultural references so that would be no.

CaraAspen · 28/01/2017 20:03

What about Gertie?

CaraAspen · 28/01/2017 20:05

Someone is actually called Moxie Crimefighter. Saw it on a list of gorgeous names and I hazarded a guess - as one does - that you might be the owner.

Notmuchtosay1 · 28/01/2017 20:08

The shortened version of my name is a boys name. People often used to expect me to be male. So I can see how it could confuse people. I met a lady years ago called Reginald. Reggie for short. That really is a boys name!

Adnerb95 · 28/01/2017 20:08

I'm with you bertrand

A lack of both compassion and common-sense displayed here.

I'm also astonished that OP didn't make the association herself with leukaemia before and think it would be both kind and sensible to consider an "adjustment" to Lucia or Lucia-rose. After all, it's only 3 weeks.

Whatssheonaboutnow · 28/01/2017 20:09

Cara - I am in no way saying the name Luca is naff. As I said, my brother is Luca and so is my nephew. It's a strong masculine name in Italy. But if an Italian family called their daughter Michael, would you not think that in going for an English name, they had lost something in translation (i.e. Michelle)?

notsurehowtodothis · 28/01/2017 20:09

Cara and reuset please stop it.

PS. Cara - thanks for implying the names Mavis and Gertie are owned by shitbags. Angry

reuset · 28/01/2017 20:10

That's nice to know, Cara.

Really? When 'Luca' sounds NOTHING like the 'Leuk' or 'Leukae' in Leukaemia? How odd.
