AIBU To Think Adressing A Child As Sexy Is Wrong?

zukiecat · 26/01/2017 18:56

I work in my local shop, and most customers are lovely though some are less so

On my shift this morning a mother was addressing her child as "Sexy". As in "Hi Sexy" "Want some juice Sexy" and "Give The Lady your penny Sexy"

The child would have been about 3 or 4 and I know it's none of my business, and if people have nicknames for their child, then that's fine.

But Sexy seemed a bit off or am I being an old fuddy duddy?

I agree. Really weird thing to do.

Nataleejah · 26/01/2017 18:59
Confused I once met a dog called Sexy. Very strange indeed
perfectlybroken · 26/01/2017 19:00

Shock maybe mother didn't understand what it meant? Grasping at straws, but possible if she wasn't English.

Stuffedshirt · 26/01/2017 19:01

I used to work in the community and calling babies sexy was commonplace. I found it very inappropriate.

zukiecat · 26/01/2017 19:01

perfectlybroken

I'm in NE Scotland and the mother was very definitely local!

Ugh. YNBU. I hate it. Especially when people call babies 'sexy boy'

watchoutformybutt · 26/01/2017 19:02

Yanbu, it's horrible.

zukiecat · 26/01/2017 19:04

It deed make me feel uncomfortable, just didn't seem right

whereiscaroline · 26/01/2017 19:04

Yanbu, it turns my stomach. Ex-SiL used to do this to my son. Angry

HedwigHooray · 26/01/2017 19:04

An acquaintance of mine refers to my baby Sexy Steve* whenever we see her. Her first language is English. It is very odd.

*not real name!

RoseGoldHippie · 26/01/2017 19:05

Maybe that was her name?

BluePheasant · 26/01/2017 19:05

Yuk.

zukiecat · 26/01/2017 19:06

Glad it's not just me who doesn't like this

Very odd way to address a child

OP posts:
oleoleoleole · 26/01/2017 19:12

Totally inappropriate.

JonSnowsWhore · 26/01/2017 19:12

Had this argument on a Facebook page once. People were actually arguing that there was nothing sexual about the word 'sexy' Hmm despite a few of us pointing out that if you google it, the very meaning of the word means sexually attractive!

Oh & then those of us who said we didn't agree with it being used on little children were the ones who were 'sick in the head' for finding something sexual about something innocent Hmm alright then.

Left that group very soon after!

Lorelei76 · 26/01/2017 19:13

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

NetflixandBill · 26/01/2017 19:15

I have never come across this and would find it really wierd, but this has been mentioned in threads before and it seems to be quite regional

DJBaggySmalls · 26/01/2017 19:18

I dont want to be the voice of doom. But sometimes people do things like this to confuse children. It can make their testimony less believable.
It can also be a way of showing off and demanding attention. Advertising how wrong things are.
I'm not saying that is what was happening in this case. But if your spidey senses scream 'eew' then its better to listen to them.

MrsEricBana · 26/01/2017 19:24

A visitor to my house once said "Hi Sexy" to my then toddler ds. I was horrified that she thought it appropriate. Hi Handsome/Cutie etc fine.

Farfromtheusual · 26/01/2017 19:26

I hate it too!! My mom and sister both call my DS a 'sexy boy'. Wrong on so many levels Hmm

gunsandbanjos · 26/01/2017 19:29

That is grim, really can't understand why anyone would think it ok.

ditzychick34 · 26/01/2017 19:30

Just plain wrong

TheCustomaryMethod · 26/01/2017 19:30

It sounds wrong for a child, and, I think, wrong for anyone with whom you have a close familial relationship. I just tried to imagine telling my sister, mum or dad that they looked 'sexy' and it felt very 'ugh'.

ArmySal · 26/01/2017 19:40

A lady I work with calls her granddaughter ''Sexy Lexy''.

Makes me wince.

blue2014 · 26/01/2017 19:42

Really really normal where I live, to the point I hadn't noticed it was odd until DH pointed it out
