AIBU To Think Adressing A Child As Sexy Is Wrong?

I work in my local shop, and most customers are lovely though some are less so

On my shift this morning a mother was addressing her child as "Sexy". As in "Hi Sexy" "Want some juice Sexy" and "Give The Lady your penny Sexy"

The child would have been about 3 or 4 and I know it's none of my business, and if people have nicknames for their child, then that's fine.

But Sexy seemed a bit off or am I being an old fuddy duddy?

maybe mother didn't understand what it meant? Grasping at straws, but possible if she wasn't English.

I used to work in the community and calling babies sexy was commonplace. I found it very inappropriate.

An acquaintance of mine refers to my baby Sexy Steve* whenever we see her. Her first language is English. It is very odd.

Had this argument on a Facebook page once. People were actually arguing that there was nothing sexual about the word 'sexy' despite a few of us pointing out that if you google it, the very meaning of the word means sexually attractive!

Oh & then those of us who said we didn't agree with it being used on little children were the ones who were 'sick in the head' for finding something sexual about something innocent alright then.

Left that group very soon after!

I have never come across this and would find it really wierd, but this has been mentioned in threads before and it seems to be quite regional

I dont want to be the voice of doom. But sometimes people do things like this to confuse children. It can make their testimony less believable.
It can also be a way of showing off and demanding attention. Advertising how wrong things are.
I'm not saying that is what was happening in this case. But if your spidey senses scream 'eew' then its better to listen to them.

A visitor to my house once said "Hi Sexy" to my then toddler ds. I was horrified that she thought it appropriate. Hi Handsome/Cutie etc fine.

I hate it too!! My mom and sister both call my DS a 'sexy boy'. Wrong on so many levels

It sounds wrong for a child, and, I think, wrong for anyone with whom you have a close familial relationship. I just tried to imagine telling my sister, mum or dad that they looked 'sexy' and it felt very 'ugh'.

A lady I work with calls her granddaughter ''Sexy Lexy''.

Really really normal where I live, to the point I hadn't noticed it was odd until DH pointed it out
