Floods of tears

cathf · 24/01/2017 16:39

How many times have I read that phrase since I started perusing the Mumsnet boards?
I'm sat here in floods of tears...
I couldn't stop crying
I'm sobbing
He's making me cry
I burst into tears
Do we want to be treated like grown-ups or like little girls?
Difficult to articulate what I mean and why I find it so annoying, but I think it boils down to women demanding equality (and rightly so) but collapsing into pathetic wrecks when the going gets tough, and expecting sympathy by crying.
Does anyone else know what I mean?

I cry at everything. I was sobbing at my kids nativity before I even clapped eyes on my dc. I cry when I'm sad, I've cried in past out of sheer rage! I am not weak. Also agree about make suicide rates.

Me and my dh are equal!

We both cry. I love having a man who is not afraid to cry

SleepFreeZone · 24/01/2017 17:52

If only I had total control of my emotions. Tears tend to just appear. They can be tears of happiness or sadness, tears of frustration, of devastation, of hopelessness. At the moment I am so sleep deprived and overwhelmed that I cry at the bloody adverts.

roundaboutthetown · 24/01/2017 17:52

Oh, ffs, what a stupid OP. There is nothing wrong with crying, per se. Being manipulative is wrong, but you don't have to cry to be a manipulative bitch or bastard. Sometimes, crying just happens - it doesn't automatically mean the person can't cope, or wants sympathy, or has completely fallen to pieces, it might just mean they need a tissue and a few seconds to gather their thoughts. It can be unhelpful, as it can show how important something is to someone when they hoped to keep a poker face, but it is by no means as bad as blindly losing your temper and getting aggressive, as many men have a tendency to do. I would rather someone cried for a minute then regained their composure than thumped me in the face.

Atenco · 24/01/2017 17:52

This is one of the weirdest OPs I have ever seen.

"Sorry, Mrs., we'll pay you a third of what a man would get for the same job because you cried when your husband left you"

MuteButtonisOn · 24/01/2017 18:02

If crying is something that makes you weak because men don't do it, which is your inference, as you mentioned equality welcome to feminism.
I'm not a crier either but I'd never judge another 'sister' for it. Unlike you.

BakeOffBiscuits · 24/01/2017 18:10

A good cry is good for you, I find.

Maybe you should try it OPGrin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 24/01/2017 18:11

my DS (male) was in FLOODS pf tears because he lost a beard game last night

LOL, it was monopoly!

but yes, look at all those men killing themselves. Nuff said., if they fucking EMOTE, suicide rates would be a lot less (a simplistic argument for a tragic issue, I know) - but there is a link

OllyBJolly · 24/01/2017 18:14

Well done on raising a son in touch with his emotions, even if he is a capitalist hipster. I'll retract the stealth boast statement Stopfucking

corythatwas · 24/01/2017 18:19

Don't ever try to read medieval literature, OP. Or ancient Greek, for that matter. It's full of men sobbing their hearts out. Usually the big heroic types.

The idea that boys don't cry came in with the Victorians. Followed eventually by the idea that must then also shameful for girls to cry- because if they want to be equal they should be like boys.

The first of these shifts has been studied quite extensively, but I don't know how much work has been done on the latter- would be interesting to see.

OllyBJolly · 24/01/2017 18:19

Sorry -should have put a smiley in to indicate >lighthearted<

I was in floods of tears and couldn't sleep when I was under a lot of stress.

You sound like you're dead, and have no soul op.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 24/01/2017 18:43

He is actually a wee bit too in touch with his emotions - bloody cries at anything . But he will live a long happy life Grin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 24/01/2017 18:46

No need ! Grin

twattymctwatterson · 24/01/2017 18:52

Since when did crying become something that only pathetic people or little girls do?

can someone tell me how NOT to cry - I cry all the time and always have. sometimes I don't want to cry as it is not appropriate but the tears jut come. I would love to be more in control sometimes but it's impossible - any advice welcome. Have tried biting my lip or pinching myself hard to divert my emotions but no joy.
