DB's room (unused) has a dead or alive rat or creature in it, AIBU for thinking why won't anyone check?

Ok, was over at mum's house nearby the other week. Had too much to drink (unplanned) so stayed over as could not drive.

DB and SIL were staying in downstairs front room which is DB's old room and a spare. I was staying in spare room upstairs.

There was a commotion which I slept through due to them both saying they heard a large animal (rat?) under the sofa bed which they thought my mum's cat (who rarely catches anything apart from birds and frogs) brought in. Her cat sleeps upstairs and was upstairs.

SIL ended up going into living room and jumping up on a sofa! Stepdad suggested putting cat into room to catch the animal which mum said was a stupid idea!

Next day room was searched apart from under plan chest and food was put out for it. No rat. Nothing.

Now I think whatever was there has died but my mum and stepdad are loathe to go inside and check it out.

AIBU to suggest they should grow some balls and just go inside and have a look?!

YANBU, surely if they leave it it will start to smell.

Yes they need to check. Why can't your brother do a thorough inspection? It is his room and he needs to take responsibility and give the room a decent clean.

It's not his room, or his house, or his responsibility, it has nothing to do with him.

Why would it be dead if it was making a racket the night before?

Get a glue trap and keep the cat out.

If it's not your house, why are you bothered? It's their problem and they can decide how to deal with it.

You mention that they initially thought it was the cat, but then discovered the cat had been asleep upstairs.

Does this cat have a cat-flap, or would there have been a window left open? Because it sounds to me as if it's much more likely that it was someone else's cat that had got in to the house and then left again by the same route.

You say the room was checked the next day 'except under plan chest' (not sure what that means, sorry) and there was nothing there, so it seems unlikely there is anything in there now, anyway. I don't quite understand why you think they need to check again.

If there was a dead rat in the room it would have started to smell on day two or three, and they would certainly know about it by now...

Why? There's nothing say it's still even in the room. Rats can squeeze out of the tiniest holes and cracks that you'd never believe possible, like under doors or underneath tiny spaces in skirting boards, letting them get under the floor or into the wall cavity.

Chances are the rat is alive and well and either in the room or found it's way out to another room! Looking for it will do no good, they're too good at hiding...buy some traps and put them initially in the room and then through the rest of the house.

It's DB's room, his responsibility if he's bothered. I wouldn't be overly fussed or worried about it unless you've got stuff in there or have to go in for any reason.
They're thinking (possibly) if it's alive they don't want it running around the house. It's better for whatever it is to pass away to rodent heaven

It will have scarpered, rats can get through surprisingly small gaps. (As I realised when I saw one dashing across my study the other evening.)

It's much more likely to have scarpered than to have dropped dead. I'd forget about it.

My mum has been ill in hospital so I've been helping her out with shopping etc...

The other day we were in sainsbos as she can drive when she saw a rat trap and thought of that for the room... I said no...

The cat does have a Cat flap but no windows are left open. It's the room that is rarely gone into.

I'm slightly concerned as an antique I bought is stored there as it was delivered there... So I'm remiss in not collecting it.

The plan chest is a huge table type bit of furniture with drawers and a huge opening where the legs are (not legs tho), it's where my mum's cat sometime hides if he can get into that room.

I had no idea about rats and holes, I knew mice could get in and out of holes the width of a pencil but no idea about rats...

Brother is coming over to their house next week and will check the room and clear it and drop my antique off.
