To bloody love Madonna for doing this?

I've been watching the speeches from the Washington women's march today and have felt so inspired and uplifted by them, it's really given me hope, didn't know Madonna was going to be there and I don't want to take away anything from the other speakers as they've all been brilliant but I just wanted to say well done Madonna for being there and adding your voice ( and admittedly celebrity kudos and attention) to this amazing show of dissent, power and love.

Creating a climate of fear is dangerous. We now have a society in which reading the wrong book or being seen with the wrong people or making an "off" joke can lose you your job and provoke abuse.

Yup, the new McCarthyism comes from the "liberal" left.

BillSykesDog · 23/01/2017 15:22

Well obviously they demonstrate against the EDL and NF. But that brings up a two pronged reason why people are reluctant to organise protests on things like Rotherham.

Firstly, demonstrations like that can and do get hijacked by people like the EDL and Britain First who would start sharing them on their FB pages and encouraging people to attend. And really who would want to end up in a position where they were painted as being associated with them? On the left wing the Socialist Worker does exactly the same thing and has form for turning up handing out signs and holding huge banners pretending they've organised it.

Secondly, the UAF etc do have a bit of form of labelling anybody who doesn't quite fit in with their agenda as a facist and protesting against them even if they're not.

It is rather a chicken and egg situation and one I believe a local residents group protesting against the building of a large mosque because of issues over the designation of land as green belt and questions over the planning approval process not being properly followed faced. On one hand you get people you'd rather not associate with getting involved, on the other you risk being put in the same box as them by people like the UAF.

Which does really show exactly why people are so fearful of getting publicly involved with something which might be perceived as close to that territory.

Will there be a protest March about this??? Will there fu (k.

SuburbanRhonda · 23/01/2017 16:08

Nothing stopping you from organising one, yeeoo.

Yeeeoooo · 23/01/2017 16:16

Nothing except the various "liberal" and anti racism groups that would activity try and destroy my life.

SuburbanRhonda · 23/01/2017 16:19
Hmm
Frillyhorseyknickers · 23/01/2017 16:55

The woman is a fucking moron. She took a peaceful march which had a genuine cause, and used it as a platform to spout off, and make some stupid reference to bombing the Whitehouse.

There are laws about bomb threats, I guarantee if you or I had said that, we would have been prosecuted - regardless of whether you were joking.

The woman is a disgrace to every female on the planet.

Chipstick10 · 23/01/2017 17:46

She's an embarrassing Pratt. I cringed

GimmeeMoore · 23/01/2017 17:52

"Madonna is a disgrace to every female on the planet".riiight.for millionth time don't exaggerate
Frankly you lost it at every female

TheHiphopopotamus · 23/01/2017 17:57

She took a peaceful march which had a genuine cause

Which was what, exactly? Not trying to be an arse, but I can't seem to pin down exactly what they were marching about. It seems to have been a mish mash of causes, ideologies and opposing groups.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 23/01/2017 18:05

It was a general Anti trump march hiphop, Anyone and everyone jumping on the banwagon.

It was an absolute shambles.

GutterMess · 23/01/2017 18:06

Madonna's star fizzled out many years ago (my teenage DDs and their friend's have no idea who she is) but, sadly, she seems incapable of fading gracefully from view.

Instead, she keeps trying desperately to portray herself as a feisty, sassy, relevant 30-something. It's embarrassing.

stopgap · 23/01/2017 18:07

I was at the march in NYC. It was cordial and respectful. Some of the signs were a bit close to the cuff, but there was no trouble, and people sang with heart the national anthem before the main rally began, and applauded the passing fire trucks and police cars.

As far as what's at stake:

Abortion limitations.
LGBT rights.
Public education as we know it, with alternative proposals ranging from vouchers to online learning.

And on and on and on...

The marchers were a diverse bunch. They were tony, working-class, smartly dressed, not giving a damn about how they dressed, white, black, Hispanic, day, straight, from a few months old to ninety-years-old and determinedly walking with a cane.

stopgap · 23/01/2017 18:08

*gay, that should obviously read.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 23/01/2017 18:34

The marchers were a diverse bunch.

Such a shame it was overtaken by the "Women's March" people isn't it, to the point where it's now being thought of as a Women's March.

stubbornstains · 23/01/2017 19:02

Care to provide any concrete examples there? Hmm.

stubbornstains · 23/01/2017 19:05

Care to provide a link to this, at all?.

stubbornstains · 23/01/2017 19:06

I'm just waiting for someone to tell us that you can't wish someone Happy Christmas because Muslims will take offence, and then I believe we will have a full house in our game of bigot bingo Grin.

stubbornstains · 23/01/2017 19:12

243 messages in, and correct me if I'm wrong, but not a single one of these posters who are so searingly, dreadfully offended that the marches in the US didn't focus on the oppression of women in Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia etc, have, actually, admitted to getting off their arses and doing anything whatsoever in support of these women in Nigeria, Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia.

MuteButtonisOn · 23/01/2017 19:56

full house in our game of bigot bingo

Oh God the irony

HattiesBackpack · 23/01/2017 19:59

stubbornstains - do you ever challenge your own thinking? You come across as being very narrow minded.

iremembericod · 23/01/2017 20:18

When stupid men say stupid things, the whole entire planet's population of men aren't assumed to be represented by that man. Yet this is not the case when someone like Madonna makes a bit of a childish speech.

She's entitled to her opinion. It's as simple as that.

Livelovebehappy · 23/01/2017 20:19

You know someone's losing the arguement when they start introducing the word 'bigot' into their posts. It's a word thrown into the mix when forcing their opinions on others isn't working.

GinIsIn · 23/01/2017 20:27

For all of those who were saying that those marching only care about America and were ignoring the poor rights of women in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia etc: huff.to/2jRogWT

This is what I was trying to tell you- it's ALL women's rights and Trump has already done significant damage and we are only 3 days in.
