Not the country, the shop!

There are a load of initiatives about to try and stop food waste about. I thought that most shops actually did this.

I was doing a bit of shopping last night, literally counting pennies, trying to make it go as far as possible. I see one of their marked down stickers on some cream in a trolley, the trolleys jam packed with fruits and veggies, I honestly thought what a result, there's strawberries in there! I don't often buy strawberries as I think they are quite expensive, and I set about finding the sticker with the new lower price on.

I was then approached to be told that I could buy the cream as it was marked down, but company policy is everything else will go in the bin!

Honestly! I couldn't even have a penny off the strawberries, onions, lettuce or peppers. All of which looked absolutely fine. They'd just throw it in the bin instead.

For such a big chain on shocked at this!

Ain't it shocking! There was loads there, they could have donated it to so many places, or have sold it just that little bit cheaper. It needn't have gone in the bin, with having stores across the country, they could make such a difference.

Why?

What was their reasoning ?

When I worked at a certain national bakery shop we were told that anything that was left over at the end of the day we could eat, but not take out of the shop as it would be considered stealing. They would rather have food go in the bin than for us to take it out and eat at home.

I was buying some reduced price flowers recently in my local shop (I won't name it in case the shop asst got it wrong). He noticed that they were a day 'out of date' and that he couldn't sell them to me. He said he would have to give them to me for free.

Win!

I assume he would have still put through the till for stock control purposes - but no waste.

The big supermarket near me reduces things down to pennies on a night for food that's going out of date that day , there is often a lot of things ! il grab a few bargains but not take the piss as there is normally quite a lot of people trying to get things . Pre made Sandwiches for example at 7 pence . I think it's great to do this instead of it gettin thrown away when there are people who it will make such a difference to !

My son worked for a corner shop chain that sold hot dogs at the end of the night they would get wrote off and binned. One night my DS and another employee decided to have one each.. They were sacked for stealing.

Lovely bangers! Great name! The assistant couldn't really tell me, he just said he thought it crazy! I couldn't believe how much stock there was, in perfect condition that would make its way to the bin. I'd have bought quite a few bits, that actually I couldn't quite afford at full price, and could have done with!

Lovelybangers! Whoop!! Free flowers! I bet that made your day! There was a beautiful bunch of flowers marked up at 0.31 that a nice elderly lady couldn't quite believe was that cheap, and she didn't want to get to the till to find the sticker was wrong, so I took them through the self service. For 31pence I like to think I made that ladies day!
Cut price flowers.. not much better is there?! I'm a bit sad, I know!

I used to work for a pizza chain. All the bases were shaped out of dough in the morning. At the end of night, we had to cook every single one left.. and put it straight in the bin.

My heart used to break as I walked home past people sleeping in doorways, who had absolutely nothing to eat. Yet there we were, cooking food for the bin. Madness.

Clumsyduck- I think the clearance sections are great. For different people with different needs.

I know a man who goes to the bakery section, he says he spends £2 a day. He goes at just the right time and picks up enough treats for himself and all the lads he works with on site, which I think is really nice. that wouldn't happen without the clearance section!

Same as some of my friends who have at times been in dire straits, far better to be there at a reduced price and provide a few meals for a family than in the bottom of a bin.

Such waste is really sad to see.

My son and his fiancée are clearance section masters, they get great stuff for pennies ( & get extra for me )

OliviaBenson! My jaw just hit the ground, so not only wasting food, but also electric,bin bags, your time. That's so bad!
Really sad considering if they'd have allowed you, them pizzas could have provided sustenance for some of the most needy. Do you mind sending me the name of the pizza chain? I promise absolute discretion, but I wouldn't want to use a chain that has them kinds of practices! Seems like the foundation to their policies is intentionally thoughtless on a few levels.

Thattimeofyearagain! good! I think it's great that people view the clearance section much better than they used to. A few years ago I'd have sniffed my nose up, but I'd like to think I'm a litter wiser now!

I'm sure I can tell you here - it was Pizza Hut. The manager who trained me told me she hated doing it but it was company policy. I can't remember exactly why, something to do with uncooked dough taking up more space in bins? Something crazy like that.

This was 10 years ago mind you.

I love a bargain - I often take a trip to local waitrose around 7pm (whilst doing taxi runs for ds) to see the nice reductions man Paul, we are on first name terms! I buy all my meat and fish reduced as long as it freezes j buy it. My lovely reductions man will tell me what sections he has already done, and where there are good bits. I go do a look over any bits he hasn't done and will hang around if I spy anything I want that is due to be reduced.

My best bargains so far Have been some gorgeous venison reduced from £14 to 88p, steaks from £5/£6 to 75p, 1kg of chicken breasts for £3.30, posh salmon en croute x 4 from £14 to £2.50, beef joint £9 to £1.25, pork joint £11 to £1.25, packets of mince I regularly pick up for 75p.....

My smal freezer is packed full and I regularly have to invite people round to eat my bargainous food as my kids don't like it! My neighbours often get stuff that I can't fit in the freezer and my mums freezer is starting to get full too!

Yeah the uncooked dough can rise in the bin - it happened in Edinburgh and the bin ended up exploding pizza dough everywhere.
Crap that it couldn't have been cooked and distributed though

Pret A Manger (?) next to my old work place used to stand outside at the end of the day with all their products and give them away. I don't know if they still do that. One morning they asked if I'd like an egg and bacon croissant as there breakfast menu was over and I took it for a colleague. That just makes sense.
I do recall we said once they should take the bag out to see if there was anyone obviously homeless who may appreciate it and they said they couldn't as if someone got food poisoning they could sue. It had to be given from the premises. That baffled us.
At our local Waitrose I often see staff being able to put aside reduced products to buy on their break . All approved by the manager.

Also I think it's "its" who have a sign in their window saying all food is reduced half price one hour before closing. Always end of work crowd in there maybe picking up something.

That must have been so frustrating. I get everything on the reduced section- a whole chicken for 84p on Wednesday!
Life would not be so easy without it, especially before our benefits were approved. It helped us get the absolute basics then- roughly meeting 5 a day, some meat once a week- and now it allows room for some treats and extras as well. To see it being thrown away is gutting.
