To live next door to a school and be declined a place.

So we recently moved to the area. We happen to live next door to the school we would like to move our DD to. They refused a place because of the ancient rule of 30 to a class. She's on a waiting list, but for how long, I don't know. We appealed but still lost. I'm just tired of having to be out the house even earlier to drive past a school to get her to the one in another town. There's another school which is about a 10 minute walk away which I'm thinking of applying for but so dissapointed that we can't get her in next door.

Its frustrating but wont be forever. My lot go to the 'local' school....10 miles away...yes miles. We live in the countryside and love it so the commute is the trade off. ☺

I DO NOT understand the crazy system that seems to exist, mainly in England, but in some other parts of the UK. Where I live, you are GUARANTEED a place in your catchment school, so this situation could never arise.

blowmybarnacles · 20/01/2017 19:22

YABU - just because you are next door doesn't make you any more entitled to a place than somebody who lives three streets away. You think the school should just offer places whenever somebody new moves nearby Confused

What would be more sensible is to operate a waiting list, which is what they are doing. Being nearer means you'll be the top of it.

I had a similar situation..moved opposite a lovely school JUST after applications for school ended so appealed to try get my daughter in to start reception in our local school...my appeal was turned down too due to max no. of children reached (and possibly as she has two older brothers that would need to follow!)....however a year of communicating to our old school and all children were offered a place.
My advise, be patient...I imagine you're at the top of the list so hopefully it won't be long. And it's worth the wait...crossing a road to get to school now is just the best!! (Made all the more joyful after all that too-ing and fro-ing!!)

We have no schools for at least 20-30 mins. If you have two within 10 minutes you're lucky, hopefully you get into the other one then.

Keep appealing, don't give up! Find out who the parent governor is, put your case, be all sweetness and light, keep appealing.
Admire the school, admire the pupil's behaviour, appeal again.
Don.t give up!

goodness yes. I remember sitting 6 children round a table designed for two as we had the new intake of nursery children visiting and a class of 33 already. A4 sheets of paper were placed carefully so they covered the whole table but did not overlap. every bit of space was full in both reception/year one classrooms.

Longdistance · 20/01/2017 23:21

Well, they can't just chick a kid out of the class to accommodate you,

You'll just have to wait until a space is available.

Megatherium · 20/01/2017 23:34

Maura, OP wouldn't be allowed to keep appealing for the same school unless the situation changed or new relevant information came to light.

Doodar91 · 21/01/2017 01:47

My daughter is 2 and goes to nursery, last year I had to drive to another village because the nursery in our village only had spaces from 2 years if she got funding, we were paying so they wouldnt take her from 2& a half despite having lots of spaces, how does that work? I still take her to the.next village even now we get funding as sheI has only.just settled.

Also to those having a go about the op moving without checking about the schools availability, for all you know the family may not have had a choice.
