To want to take buggy on holiday for 3yr old

Hi all,

We're going on holiday in June for 10 nights, myself, DP & DD who is 3 (4 at the end of august).

DD is very independent and walks everywhere, we never use a buggy of any kind at home, as she's such a brilliant walker (in fact last week she climbed to the top of the huuuuge hill/mini mountain at delamere forest).

The only reason I want to take a buggy is so myself and DP may have a chance to have a meal together at the restaurant nearby to our hotel on one of the nights with her (hopefully!) sleeping in her buggy.

Of course all the rest of the holiday and days out etc the buggy would be staying at the hotel, as we'd have no use for it.

But DP thinks she's too old now for a buggy and I'm sitting on the fence, as she's so wild and mischievous when she's tired, we would otherwise have absolutely no chance of even having one little moment together on holiday without the buggy.

When we went last year it went quite well with the buggy, in fact she loves her buggy and often climbed in it to sleep of her own accord, so by gods mercy we did manage to catch a few nice moments watching entertainment etc last time.

Have any of you been in this kind of situation? We don't have family available to come with us, and I would never trust a babysitter in another country so really unsure of whether AIBU?

Given that you can take buggies on planes for free, I'd say do it.

We took one for our 4 year old for the same reason. Definitely take it!

I would. We used to do it with ds until he was about 4.

Meant we could sit out on an evening while he slept in his buggy.

Do it. We took a stroller on holiday for our just turned 4 yr old for the same reason. It worked well.

We bought one for our five year old.
Poor little sausage was just bushed in 28 degree heat. It gave him chance to have a nap.

YANBU we ditched the buggy the day after their 3rd birthdays and the only time I really missed it was in situations like this.

I'm still using my buggy on occasion for my almost five year old and always on holiday! They get knackered and it's a good place to nap

Take it! I went away without ds's buggy (he's 3) and it was miserable. He never goes in it at home but there were so many times we needed it away.

DD didn't have a buggy from 18 months. I still think you should take the buggy

God yes. You want to enjoy the holiday, and the long hot days often mean you need a buggy.

You can always get a cheap £15 stroller from Argos and a strap so you can carry it over your shoulder when walking.

Yanbu. It is also handy for the airport in case you're having to rush through or queue for a long time.

Take it in case she will sleep in it. We went with our two DS last year. The younger one (2) slept in it but the older one (4) was too tall to comfortably lie in his. It was however a god send in the airport for both of them

I think it would be a good idea to take it. I hope she is willing to use it though. My mother had a push chair. I rode in it about twice and refused to ride in it ever again and would stalk beside her with an outraged look on my face while she tried to entice me to get in it.

She then used it to carry the shopping from the supermarket, so I had it wheeling alongside me until I was 8 and was no doubt judged as being some lazy, spoiled little girl by passing future Mumsnetters.

I would (and did). No sleeping, sadly, but it was very handy for carting stuff around and meant we didn't have to carry a tired and whingy child home at night.

I would take the buggy with you dd might not use it at home but trust me she will probably want to make use of it on holiday.

I would, especially if you're confident she won't regress into wanting to use it instead of walking anywhere.

Take it! Particularly if it is a beach holiday. The advertised 5 min walk to the beach will turn out to be at least 15 mins at toddler pace, you will have loads of stuff to carry with towels, buckets & spades etc and you will all be hot so your DC won't want to walk and you won't want to carry them. We went on holiday when DC1 was 3.9 and DC2 was 12mths. DC2 still fitted in the sling so we took it just to use in the airport. I am so glad we took it as DC1 ended up in the buggy and DC2 in the sling just about every time we left the hotel complex. It was miserable carrying DC1 in a sling in 29 degree heat but so much better than lugging DC1 along.

Definitely. We went on holiday with my 5yo niece and DD, who was also 3. BIL had to hire a pram for niece, you'd be surprised how much she'll need it!

If you are going somewhere child orientated some hotels have buggies for use, if you don't mind borrowing one and would rather not deal with it though the airport etc.
But personally I think it's a great idea and you might find it helpful in the airport too, even if you use it to carry the suitcase!

God yes! We do every time and will be taking it on holiday in the summer for our 5 year old (although he's quite big and it's now at point of colllapse) what do people do with kids on holiday when too big for a buggy??

Take it. Absolutely. Great for naps and even if you DD is a great walker at home, it can be different when they are on holiday,in the heat, with later nights than normal.

I took ours on holiday when DS was 18m and found it a bit useless. We walked miles to get him to sleep in it but he woke as soon as we stopped. Won't be bothering on next holiday when he will be nearly 3. But if you know your DD likes it then you might as well take it.
