AIBU... Fuming!!

LouBlue1507 · 17/01/2017 07:11

My DP bought me a pair of GHDs for Christmas, I've used them a handful of times for 10 mins and today they have broke! To say I'm fuming is an understatement, they haven't even lasted a month!

Luckily there is a 12 month warranty and I can send them to be repaired, but now I have no faith in them and don't believe they're going to last very long! Angry

I want a refund and want to buy a different brand but I know I'm not entitled to one Sad

If they brake again after being repaired can I demand a refund and claim they're not fit for purpose?

I've worked with ghd for years selling them in a salon. Since the company was sold imo they really aren't as good. We had tons come back and sent off to ghd for repair or replacement. You get 2 year warranty with them.

The mark 4 version are best to buy as they are the original ones. Maybe ask for them as your replacement op.

I would say Cloud 9 s are far better . They are made by the inventor of ghd.

My mum got me a set of the pink ones for my 18th which were in honour of breast cancer awareness charity i think. She got them through a woman she worked with and tbh i think they were fake. The first time i turned them on, nothing, didn't work at all. Got swapped for a new pair. They were rubbish at straightening my hair, by the time i got one half done it had started curling again, and the way the plates where set they'd catch and pull on strands of hair like having your hair really hard pulled. I know she must have paid a lot for them and it was a really thoughtful gift but also having really long thick hair the really skinny plates were just no good for me. She ended up having them for herself as a quick run over before work in the morning, they were ok for her almost straight natural hair to just get rid of kinks from sleeping.
From what i've heard about GHD's they're supposed to be the holy grail of straighteners, which is why i was so sure mine were fake.
IF you're unhappy with a replacement and they won't refund you could contact trading standards about testing to see if they are genuine, unless you got really unlucky to get a faulty pair then it dos sound dodgy.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/01/2017 07:56

I think you've just been incredibly unlucky or have fakes. I got my first pair when I was 10 and they broke last year, when I was 22, and that was daily use for me and my two sisters!

ChuckSnowballs · 17/01/2017 07:56

Fuming with curly hair looks so much more effective than fuming with straight. Perfect timing.

Chloe84 · 17/01/2017 07:58

Why are you fuming? Things sometimes don't work, that's why there are warranties.

Pluto30 · 17/01/2017 08:10

You can demand a return for a faulty good, by law.

I would always opt for a Cloud 9 straightener over a GHD. Slightly more expensive, but they're much better quality.

Pluto30 · 17/01/2017 08:11

(Cloud 9 is made by the people who used to own GHD).

BertrandRussell · 17/01/2017 08:13

Take them back to the shop. Get new ones. No big deal.

MetalMidget · 17/01/2017 08:15

My ghds have been going strong for 7 years. They're the only straighteners that have any effect on my hair!

GloGirl · 17/01/2017 08:17

The old GHDs are better than new ones, the quality started to go down. I replaced my GHDs with Cloud 9s.

Op I'd be fuming too and definitely wouldn't be happy with a repair. Replacement or refund only. I'd argue they were defective and therefore not fit for repair.

LALALALALAND · 17/01/2017 08:19

They are just a thing. They broke. They are under warrantee.

No fuming needed. If you regularly fume about the little things in life then maybe consider an anger management course?

beargrass · 17/01/2017 08:22

I think you're unlucky. I'm sure I've had mine for something like 10yrs and they're fine

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 17/01/2017 08:28

As long as she's not 'fumming', that's even worse nods

hellsbells99 · 17/01/2017 08:30

The new GHDs (platinum) appear to have an inherent fault - both my sister and her friend have had theirs replaced within 2 months of having them. The red light would flash on them and they wouldn't heat up - there is even a section on the GHD website about resetting them etc. If you google for faults on the new GHDs, you will find lots of complaints!

KitKats28 · 17/01/2017 08:38

Of course you are entitled to a refund. Why on earth wouldn't you be? They are not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

BertrandRussell · 17/01/2017 08:40

They wonMt be repaired. You will be able to get new ines. Just go back to the shop with them.

rightsofwomen · 17/01/2017 08:44

You are entitled to a full refund (if you have the receipt)

greedygorb · 17/01/2017 08:48

From what I've heard GHD quality is just rubbish now. My 10 year old GHD's reliable and still on the go. My sister got new ones. They were replaced 4 times in a year. My hairdresser said the same - they've switched to another brand.

empirerecordsrocked · 17/01/2017 09:10

Are the definitely genuine?

GreyHare · 17/01/2017 10:02

My new GHD's fizzed and popped just after a year (Didn't realise they had a two year warranty Sad) but the quality is awful on the new ones, my old ones lasted for years, but the new ones are definitely not the same, and no they weren't not fake.

Mrsglitterfairy · 17/01/2017 10:05

I've had mine for 10 years and they're just on their way out now so I would be very surprised if another pair were faulty, I think you've just been very unlucky. That is as long as they were bought from a reputable place and not knock-offs I would get an exchange and see how you go

user1484317265 · 17/01/2017 10:11

Why the hell would you be fuming? Shit happens, electrical things are sometimes faulty. Just take it back, its no big deal.

Chill out.

VladmirsPoutine · 17/01/2017 10:14

Why are you fuming? Seems a major over reaction. Just return them for a new set.
