and not a verb - any other pedants out there who get unreasonably annoyed by things like this? Also farewelled.

Mouse I agree with you but if you really think about the words, it shouldn't be gave birth because you didn't. You gave life. Or birthed.

Good thread! I don't normally think about things like this in the mornings (I usually start getting wound up at about noon). Thank you Smile

Slippersandacuppa · 17/01/2017 08:15

Unless, I suppose, you gave the experience of being birthed. It's a very interesting phrase. I've done it four times and have never really thought about it. Hmm.

Blush I stand corrected on 'action'. I think the reason I hate it so much is because I associate it with a company I used to work for where it was more or less a hanging offence if you didn't use the hideous management speak. Every day was a constant bombardment of actioning things, blue sky thinking, cascading etc and it made me hate them all.

Where is the OP, though?

I hate it to OP. People use it when they want to make the exchange of presents sound like a far more sophisticated experience than mere pressie swapping.

Too

When we use the online appointments system at our doctor's surgery , we are informed that "you have been arrived!"

madcatwoman61 · 17/01/2017 10:49

I'm still here - not sure I have anything to add, very interested in the responses though. I probably am being unreasonable, it just sounds wrong to me! Probably evidence I'm turning into a grumpy old dinosaur

Andy

How long until "I should of... " stops making me cringe?

That stays with you, but, as a linguist, the reasons for it are obvious. Take solace in that!

Andrewofgg · 17/01/2017 21:20

You didn't birth your kid you gave birth to it!

In Gone With The Wind the black-stereotype servant girl say "I don't know nothing 'bout birthing babies" - which is another variation on the theme!
