To hate my electric company??

Just a bit of a moan to be honest!!
My house has no heating (currently saving and getting quotes to be installed) so have been using electric heaters the last few months to warm us up.

We knew it would be expensive.
We moved in in June, Eon set our gas and electric (gas fire we don't use) at £58 a month, pricey I thought for a one bed terraced house but as we just moved in they needed estimates.

We had a email yesterday saying we used so much between November and now, and are changing the direct debit to £58 to £110 a month. They have guessed what we have used will be the same for the next 6 months.

I spent most of yesterday crying because although it's 'only' £55 ish more, it's a lot of money to us. We earn very little. And it's a tiny house!!

I just wanted a moan really.

As you were 😃

Yes oil filled radiators are definitely cheaper than most other heaters. Panel heaters can be reasonably efficient used sparingly as can halogen heaters if you don't mind the glow. Convector heaters and fan heaters are the worst. They EAT electricity.

Can you tell how many long renovations and boiler breakdowns I've lived through to find this out?

Is the water electric, and do you leave the immersion on all the time? That uses a lot.

OP do you no owe your supplier money because you have been underpaying? The £110 will include a payment to pay your arrears. You may be cheaper paying that off as a lump sum and switching supplier.

I rarely stay with the same electricity company two years running. I always compare. I was with Eon last year, the cheapest tariff they quoted me for this year was £185. ( I live in a 5 bedroomed house). I switched supplier and now pay £95 a month- half of what Eon wanted to charge me.
Find out your actual annual consumption and get on some comparison sites.
Even better get on to a group switch, Uswitch are good, but read Martin Lewis moneysaving expert pages for advice www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/you-switch-gas-electricity

smilingthroughgrittedteeth We live in a 2 bed and I'm out at work all day, dp works nights so is in bed all day so our heating isn't on much but our gas/electric dd is £95 a month

Also 2 beds here and out at work all day. Our combined gas/electric is £38.
Just out of curiosity, you aren't on a metric meter and being charged imperial are you? (if your meter says m3, but your bills have a conversion factor calculation on it, that could indicate you are being incorrectly billed, by a multiple of 2 or 3 times).

Guess how I know that Angry

£100 per month for electric doesn't sound too bad even for a one bedroom Property. Heating water by electric is expensive. Some of your costs would be the same whether you lived in a 3 bed house or a one bed house - things like the electricity used to heat water and watch tv etc. The only real differences are the number of light bulbs and the amount of heating. I think you are being unreasonable to hate the electric company as they only charge for what you have used. You could look at ways to reduce your bill which your energy company can usually help with.
