Housecoat vs Dressing Gown

There's a post doing the rounds on facebook about how dressing gown is the right way to say it.

I know that house coat used to be a thing and stuff but I call it both a house coat and a dressing gown interchangeably.

What do you call it? (And where are you from incase that changes it?)

Dressing gown but dh calls it a house coat. I'd never heard it before he said it . We're both from Belfast

Housecoat - Scotland.

Dressing gown. Anything that is nightwear/loungewear like that is a dressing gown. Housecoats are those nasty polyester coats that cleaning ladies used to wear. Like Mrs Overall in Acorn Antiques.

Dressing gown - Kent

DH calls it a housecoat and he is Scottish.

Dressing gown. My grandmither used to have a housecoat but that was a different thing - more like a cross between an apron and a science overall. It was to protect her clothes during cooking and housework, rather than a cosy thing to slob around in.

Dressing gown (my Brum DH)

Dressing gown (Scottish). Housecoat is old-fashioned now and refers to something different, as Eolian says.

These are housecoats, you wear them over your dayclothes, to keep them clean.

If it's fluffy, fleecy or quilted and you wear it over your pjs, it's a dressing gown.

The word housecoat sounds so drab.

Dressing gown. Scotland. My old mum still says housecoat though. My kids haven't a clue what she's talking about. I think she thinks I'm social climbing, so possibly there's a class-related element to the definition.
I'd say a housecoat is the kind of over-dress you would have worn 'in the olden days' to do the housework. My grandma wore them. And for women of that social class/generation, you wouldn't have had an item of clothing to
be worn in between getting up and getting dressed, hence 'dressing gown' an unused phrase. 'Housecoat' would have been the word that stuck when women did start using them.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/01/2017 14:11

Hilda Ogden would have worn a housecoat.

averylongtimeago · 09/01/2017 14:12

In the 1970's no self respecting housewife would be without one, mine was pink and blue. I miss my housecoat!

See, I know what a house coat is but I still used housecoat and dressing gown (mainly housecoat). I'm from the North West.

Just think its funny some people I know have never heard anyone call it a housecoat before but almost everyone I know does.

I'd never heard the word housecoat until I moved to Scotland.

Gottagetmoving · 09/01/2017 14:17

I thought a house coat was quilted with that material that had foam on the backside of it. Dressing gowns were more blanket material.
Whatever you call them, most are horrible. Grin

littlemissfuckingsunshine · 09/01/2017 14:22

Housecoat - Scotland

Chocoholicmonster · 09/01/2017 14:23

Both me & DP call it a dressing gown. He's from Birmingham & I'm from North Wales.

HistoriaTrixie · 09/01/2017 14:27

Robe - grew up in Ohio, USA. Housecoat and housedress to me are two sides of the same coin - both have short sleeves and snap up the front and the hem hits just around the knee. Housedress would have somewhat lighter fabric than a housecoat.
