There's a post doing the rounds on facebook about how dressing gown is the right way to say it.

I know that house coat used to be a thing and stuff but I call it both a house coat and a dressing gown interchangeably.

What do you call it? (And where are you from incase that changes it?)

Dressing gown - South Wales.

Housecoat my grandmother used to wear over her clothes for cleaning. Wouldn't be seen dead in one of those instead I have quite a collection of aprons Blush

I just googled '70's household work overall' and that popped up along with a whole load of other photos. I work with older people - the women I visit who are in their 80's/90's pretty much all own a 'housecoat' like that or the gingham check variety. They call them housecoats.

abigfuckinghohoho · 09/01/2017 15:45

Housecoat (Scotland) don't know anyone that calls it a dressing gown !

User006point5 · 09/01/2017 15:46

Yes, I seem to remember Hilda called hers a pinny, but to me it was a housecoat. (Stan wore stripy pyjamas, I seem to remember)

RosyGold · 09/01/2017 16:13

Housecoat - Scotland

EmeraldScorn · 09/01/2017 16:16

A dressing gown now but my older relatives call it a house coat (and always have) and I always called it a house coat as a child. We're in Ireland.

Elphame · 09/01/2017 16:16

Dressing gown - North Wales

EuropeanSwallow · 09/01/2017 16:20

My mum calls it a housecoat, Yorkshire and NW and in her 70s. I always used to call it a dressing gown but now, living in the USA, I have to call it a robe otherwise the shop assistants look at me like Confused when I ask where they might be found. They usually follow up with "I luurve your accent, where's that from?"

TheNaze73 · 09/01/2017 16:22

Dressing gown - Essex

House coat - 1937

iknowimcoming · 09/01/2017 16:26

My mil bought me housecoat for my birthday when I was 23 (it was not nearly as nice as the ones in the link upthread) my work colleagues didn't believe me so I took it in to work for them and they made me swear to take in every present they got me after that, they were not disappointed Wink

ItsLikeSputnik · 09/01/2017 16:27

Dressing gown - I'm from Cumbria but now live in Ireland & it's a dressing gown in both places.

I think of a housecoat as a cotton thing with sleeves, worn to do the housework back in the 1950s.

eyespydreams · 09/01/2017 16:34

Is it wrong that I kind of want a flowered nylon housecoat/pinny now? Think how useful over work clothes in the am while getting small dc ready. Worth £20 I think?

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/01/2017 16:36

Yes, it's very wrong. Avert your eyes from the polyester monstrosities this minute!

Beeziekn33ze · 09/01/2017 16:36

West African friend calls a dressing gown a morning robe.
For me bathrobe is the towelling one with a tie belt I put on when wet after bath or shower. Dressing gown is the thick cuddly one with a tie belt which goes over pjs or nighties to keep warm.
I dimly remember long ago aunts having housecoats which were often quilted, fitted, and buttoned, they had no tie belt.

FannyWisdom · 09/01/2017 16:55

I'm I bit of a housecoat snob.

Zip up over buttons.
No slanty pockets.
No dangly ties or stupid bungee plastic bits.
Nothing too flammable Grin

Don't knock it, nothing beats hoiking ones bosom in ones housecoat.

holliewilliams · 09/01/2017 16:57

Dressing gown, although DP has taken to calling it his Hangover Jacket Grin

goose1964 · 09/01/2017 17:08

Dressing gown, originally from Wales, to me a housecoat is quilted and buttons down the front
